Project Overview

Technician will be performing an installation of Motorola MC17 scanners and cradles in Toys and Babies
RUs stores as replacement for the existing Batch Phaser Guns. The Toys R Us Store Manager or
Associate is responsible for the testing of equipment.
If store has existing MC17 scanners (4 or less scanners), please install the existing MC17 scanners same
as the new MC17 scanners.

Overall Scope of Work

1. Technician(s) arrive on-site at 6:30 AM


2. Locate new equipment and ensure the store number written on box matches the
store number you are at.. If any discrepancies escalate to Steve P immediately
3. Locate Registry Desk.
4. Inform Manager to print & read Impact Planner regarding the install.
5. Ask Manager to create a Test or fake registry (in preparation of testing new scanners).
6. Check in with:

a. Stephen Petruzzi (Project Mgr) 508-963-7140

7. Save all boxes & return shipping label (need to box old equipment)
8. Remove only Batch Phaser scanners from one side of the Registry desk!
a. DO NOT REMOVE ALL EXISTING BATCH PHASER SCANNERS.
b. START WITH THE SIDE OF DESK THAT HAS THE MOST SCANNERS.
9. Install new Motorola MC17 cradles, power supply and other related items.
10. Place new MC17 scanners inside cradles and ensure all cradles are receiving power.
11. Leave scanner in cradle, it will take approximately 5 minutes for the scanner to power ON.
12. Leave scanner in cradle for another additional 5 minutes:
a. Scanner will re-boot several times
b. Ignore the Calibration Screen.
c. Scanner will boot to the Baby Registry screen (shown on page 16).
13. Scanners may remain on The Baby Registry screen -OR- scanner will start downloading
process.
14. If a download process starts, process will take approximately 15 minutes to complete (scanners
must remain in cradle during this process)
15. Once download process is completed, scanners are ready to be tested by store personnel.
16. Testing procedures are on pages 19-24.
17. Testing of (4) scanners need to be completed prior to de-installing the remaining existing
scanners (store manager or associate is responsible for testing new scanners).
18. Check out with Steve P. Deliverables would consist of :
a. 1 picture of equipment returning to TRU right before box is closed as insurance all equipment
was boxed up as best as possible
b. 1 picture of the left side of cash wrap showing newly installed guns
c. 1 picture of the right side of cash wrap showing new installed guns
d. Complete the Checkout Sheet and email pics and checkout to spetruzzi@spencertech.com

Time Line

The project is currently accomplished within 2 hours.


If Store has existing MC17 scanners (4 or less scanners), please mount the existing MC17 scanners at
Registry Desk with the new MC17 scanners.

REMINDER

Only working on one side of the Registry Desk at a time, leaving the opposite side of the Registry Desk
existing Batch Phaser Guns operational until at least (4) of the new scanners are tested by a manager or
store associate. Once new guns are tested, proceed with removal of the remaining Batch Phaser guns.

Removal of Existing Scanners


1. Locate the Baby Registry Desk in store.
2. There are existing Batch Phaser scanners installed on both sections of Registry Desk.
3. Only remove Batch Phaser scanners from one side of the Registry Desk (leaving some of the
existing Batch Phaser scanners online & operational).
4. The current Batch Phaser scanners should look like the picture below:

5. Remove Batch Phaser scanners from cradle.


6. The bank of (4) phasers are typically installed on a shelf which pulls out on drawer sliders. Pull
the shelf out towards you and locate the black power supply in the back for that bank of (4)
cradles. Unplug the power supply and save the aluminum mounting bracket.

7. Remove the cradles from the shelf by lifting them straight up vertically, they are held in place by
2 screws. Remove those screws and save them (will be used to install the new cradles).

Installation of MC17 Cradles

Save All Boxes: Reusing boxes to box all old equipment & related items.
Refer to pictures & instruction on pages 6-15 for further details.
Before mounting the new MC17 scanners in place, remove the white front covering.
Position the new cradles on the shelf. It may be necessary to remove the drawer slides from the
bottom of shelf in order to lower it to accommodate the height of the new cradles.
Attach the cradles to the back of the shelf re-using the screws that were used for the old cradles
in step 7 on page 4.
Attach the 1st cradle to the power supply using the appropriate daisy chain cable.
Daisy chain the remaining 3 cradles using the appropriate cables.
Secure the power supply in place using the same aluminum bracket that was removed from the
old power supply in step 6 on page 4.
Attach the covers to the cradles.

NOTE: There is a plastic insert that goes into the slot that covers
the cradle screws DO NOT INSTALL THIS, it can be discarded.

10. Once cradles are installed, place MC17 scanners inside cradle.

Cradle Front Cover Removal


To remove the front cover:
1. Loosen the 2 Philips head screws that secure the front cover to the base.
The screws will stay attached to the white cover.

Once the screws have been loosened, pull the cover away from the base.
Lift from the top, then disengage the lower hooks on front cover (see photos
below)

After the front cover has been removed, lay it to the side so that is does not get lost
or damaged.

Mounting the Cradle


The charging cradle contains mounting holes in the back housing (grey portion of the charging cradle.)
There are 4 holes used to attach the cradle to the Registry Desk.
The mounting cradle will be secured by at least 2 screws but no more than 4. This depends on how the
installation team originally mounted the cradles.

NOTE: If the AC power supply cable is connected to a working outlet the power supply fan will
run. The fan will continue to run even if the DC power cable is disconnected (6 prong
connection)

Connecting A/C Power to Main Cradle


The MC17 charging cradle gets its power from a 120V AC power supply.
Connecting the power supply to the PRIMARY cradle:
Insert the 2 prong end of the DC power cable through the opening on the side of the back
housing. (See Photo Below)

The main power connection is connected to the lower DC input on the 1st cradle (see
photos below)

Connecting Multiple Cradles


(Daisy Chain) to 1 Power Supply

Connecting the interconnect cable from the 1st cradle to the 2nd cradle:
The main power connection is connected to the lower DC input on the 1st cradle (see
photo)
Additional cradles are connected via an interconnect cable. The interconnect cable
connect from the top DC IN\OUT on the 1st cradle to the bottom DC IN\OUT on the
adjoining cradle.

1. To install the front cover, insert the tabs on the bottom of the front cover. (see below)

2. After the bottom tabs have been installed lower the cover onto the back housing.
Secure cover with 2 Philips head screws.

Charging Light on Cradle
When the MC17 scanner is placed into the charging cradle, a red light will come on to indicate
that the unit is charging. The light is located on the cradle behind the MC17 scanner. The light
will turn green when the MC17 scanner has reached full charge.

see and must be viewed from a side angle.

Configuring MC17 Scanner Guns
1.Place MC17 scanners in cradle.
2.Scanners are to remain in cradle for approximately 5 minutes for scanners to power ON.

3. Once scanners power ON, scanners are to remain in cradle for an


additional 5 minutes.
Scanners will reboot several times DO NOT TOUCH DURING
THIS TIME
Ignore the CALIBRATION screen. DO NOT CALIBRATE THE
SCANNERS.

4.Scanners will eventually boot up to the following screen:

5. If scanner remains at The Baby Registry screen (screen shown above)


for 5 minutes the gun is ready to be tested.. If this screen disappears
and reads Warm Boot, DO NOT TOUCH move onto page 18
6.Store manager or store associate will need to test the scanners.
7.Testing procedures are on pages 20 thru 23.
8.While scanners are being tested, please prepare the new scanners & cradles for install.
9.Reminder: Do not remove the existing Batch Phaser until (4) new
scanners have been tested.

THESE STEPS WILL ONLY BE NECESSARY IF THE GUN PULLS NEW SOFTWARE TRU IS
IMPLEMENTING.. IF GUN STAYS ON THE BABY REGISTRY SCREEN ON PAGE 17 THE STEPS
ON PAGES 18 AND 19 ARE NOT REQUIRED
1. If scanner starts to download new software; scanner screen will display a:
WARM BOOT; DO NOT TOUCH message in red
2. Leave scanner in cradle for the download process.
3. Download process will take approximately 12-15 minutes to complete.
4. When download is complete; scanner will boot up to the screen shown below.

5. If scanner boots up to the above screen; double tap on the Registry icon (using a stylus from
the MC3090 RF guns).
6. Scanner will boot to a Welcome screen.

7. Scanner is ready for testing.


8. Follow testing procedures on pages 20 and then move onto 24, 25 and 26..
9. Store Manager or Store Associate is required to test at least (4) scanners before disconnecting
remaining existing Batch Phaser scanners.

Store Manager or Associate Testing Procedures


Testing of MC17 scanners must be performed by store personnel

Testing of 1st Scanner:


Create a New Registry (Test Registry):
o Only Create (1) Test Registry For Testing Of All Scanners.
o Test registry must first be added to the registry database.
o Once information has been entered, print Baby Registry to obtain Registry
Number.
o Proceed to pages 20-25 for detail testing procedures.
Testing of Remaining Scanners:
Updating the Existing Test Registry:
o Use the same Test registry that was created to test the 1st scanner to test
the remaining scanners
o Scan the same Registry Bar Code
o Proceed to pages 20-25 for detail testing procedures.

Please scan at least 3 items.
After scanning all items, registry is ready to be finalized.
Finalize Registry: Re-scan registry bar code that was used to create the scan session.
After re-scanning the registry, scanner will display Saving Session message (same as
Uploading File).

9. Log onto the PC to confirm registry was updated.


10. Updating an Existing Registry:
1. The same process as creating a new registry file.
2. Locate the registry file on PC and print existing registry.
3. Remove MC17 scanner from cradle
4. Press <Start> and then <New> on the MC17 scanner.
5. Scan registry bar code.
6. Give scanner to customer to scan items.
7. When finish scanning all items, re-scan registry bar code to finalize registry.
8. Log onto PC and confirm existing registry was updated.

1. Create a New Registry & print registry (follow instructions on page 19).
2. Remove scanner from cradle & scan registry barcode to begin the registry session.

3. Scan at least (3) items to add the Registry list.

NOTE: This is the point where the scanner is given to the customer to scan items to be
added to registry.

4. When items are all scanned the customer return the scanner back to Registry Desk to finalize the
registry (Closing the Session).

5. Closing the session:

Press the DONE button in the lower right corner

6. Once DONE is selected you will be prompted to end the session.


7. After selecting YES (pressing only once); there may be a 5 second delay in between screen
changes.

8. Press OK to add the items to registry.


9. Log onto the PC, retrieve the registry and confirm all items were added to the registry.
10. Updating an Existing Registry:

Locate existing registry file on PC and print existing registry.


Remove MC17 scanner from cradle
Scan registry bar code.
Scan at least 3 items.
Press DONE (located at bottom right corner of screen)
Scanner will ask Are you sure you want to end session? select YES.
Press OK to add items to existing registry.
Log onto PC and confirm existing registry was updated.

Packing Old Equipment

Box any damaged or defective equipment, mark new equipment OBF (out of
box failure) & place item in the box along with the old equipment being returned.
Please ensure the following items are removed and boxed.
o All existing Batch Phaser scanners
o All existing Batch Phaser cradles
o Power supplies and power cables
o Patch cables
o (2) adaptors from the back of each PC (D9 & MCL Link adaptor)
Reusing the box that the new equipment was shipped in to box the old
equipment and any defective new equipment (scanner or cradle).
A return shipping label was included with the new equipment.
Ensure that all old equipment are securely placed inside box & place return
shipping label on box.
Give box to manager or store personnel for shipping.

Packing Old Equipment (continue)

Existing Batch Phaser Equipment boxed with FedEx Return Label.


Re-using packing materials to pack existing Batch Phaser Equipment.
Need to ensure that the old equipment is secure inside box (minimum movement inside box).
Place defective or damaged new equipment on top of the old equipment.

DELIVERABLES REQUIRED

Troubleshooting
IF ASKED TO DO EITHER OF THE FOLLOWING, INFO BELOW ON HOW TO COMPLETE
WARM BOOT
A warm boot restarts the mobile computer by closing all running programs.
Press and hold the Up Arrow key and the Down Arrow key for 10 seconds.
Continue pressing & holding the Up and Down Arrow keys
Now press the Scan key. Release the Up Arrow and Down Arrow keys.
Hold Scan key for 3 seconds and then release the Scan key.
Scanner will reboot.
COLD BOOT
A cold boot restarts the mobile computer and erases all stored records and entries that are not
saved in flash memory. Never perform a cold boot unless a warm boot does not solve the
problem.
Prior to cold booting a scanner; store associate will need to:
o Log onto SSO (Single Sign On) WebAdmin select Cold Boot Gun click Go
o Wait for the, You have 30 or 60 minutes to cold boot gun message.
o Once that message appears on screen, start cold booting scanner.
Press and hold the Up Arrow key and the Down Arrow key for 15 seconds.
Continue pressing & holding the Up and Down Arrow keys
Now press the Scan key. Release the Up Arrow and Down Arrow keys.
Continue pressing the Scan key until the unit powers Off (screen goes blank)
Release the Scan key and scanner will reboot.
