Literature - another piece of the world

Literature has a two folded meaning: it`s meant to release the author`s inner
tension and to please the reader. That makes literature the bearer of
another piece of the world (a new point of view on the world as seen
through the author`s eyes) and so close to one`s senses and feelings.
First of all, literature, as the product of the author, bears his personal feelings
and opinions. Writing is the result of a restless mind, of an eddying and
bleeding soul. Whether he writes for money or only for the pleasure of doing
it, an author always allows his own feelings to interfere and mingle with his
imagination. There are authors who release their repressed feelings through
writing and authors who use writing as a means of protest; it is known that
literature has always been the best way of expressing opinions and alluding
to social injustices. The play Major Barbara by George Bernard Shaw is
such a text, as it exposes the flaws of the upper middle class with the
purpose of motivating the middle class to orient towards greater aims in the
Victorian period.
Secondly, a text is meant to be read. An author may want to share his own
experience with others, to inflict certain ideas on their minds or merely to
entertain them, but in every case, he offers the reader another piece of the
world. This another piece of the world is the author`s personal approach
to reality, it expresses his own thoughts and thus makes the reader perceive
it as part of the world. Every reader either finds himself in one of the
characters or in one of the situations of a book, or sympathizes with a
character, this being the case of the narrator in Lloyd Jones` Mister Pip.
The way Mr. Watts gives life to the text, by reading it so we heard the shape
of each word projects it outside the book, restoring it to the world to which
it belongs. All of an author`s opinions, the way in which he understands life
are codified, sealed into a text; reading is the counter process of writing, as it
enables a piece of text to become again a piece of the world. We can closely
relate to a book (recognize ourselves in a character, metaphorically befriend
one of them) because by undergoing the process of reading (of activating an
immortal piece of reality) we enter the world of the author and indirectly
sympathize with his feelings.
To conclude, we may say that the power of writing cannot be denied; writing
is the most powerful means to release feelings, inflict ideas, manipulate
masses and delight readers. From delighting people to instilling ideas, from
releasing pain to protesting, the power of writing has always subdued the

individual by showing him an unknown part of the world, another piece of

the world.
