The dominant perspective on organization of society in is based on illusionary

matrix which claims that the primordial, barbaric discriminatory practices of

caste have gradually waned in many spheres of life and in the spaces where they
still come out in form of inhuman atrocity; these will also wane away with either
economic progress and development of an entrepreneurial modern self which is
more concerned with sensex, good governance, high growth, modern ways of
life. To put in other words whose identity will not be determined by these
ascriptive identities rather with these high modernity values. Or if this is a long
path then the power of law and mechanism of state will make sure that these
barbaric resurgences of cruelty in public sphere which for this modern man
seems like a black spot on progress of nation end. I wish to make it clear after
providing this general idea that my intent is not here concerned with what do we
mean by caste system, has the moment of caste arrived; neither am going to
analyze the strength of argument laid above regarding how and why will caste go
away. What concerns me more is the very taken for granted aspect of caste
atrocity. I am more interested in understanding the present and especially the
present is represented, formed and is deeply associated with past. What is of
interest here is a very old question that why does caste based violence
happens, why caste atrocity take place? And not to mention the answer stands
as if it very clear in front of us making thus question an over-answered, overresearched and over-talked issue. What we are trying to understand is something
like this that- Has caste based violence eroded out of social and highly political
space of India? If not, then why it persists. More importantly- Has there been no
change in nature of caste atrocities and violence perpetrated? Or to frame from
another lens- Why it is that gradually these incidences keep on reverberating
after a time gap? Moreover what happens between these major instances of
perpetration of violence? Does during that gap period caste based violence rests
and if not then can we properly say that our vocabulary of violence or atrocity is
proper enough to understand caste system? It is interesting to note that when
we understand violence perpetrated in case of not following the caste based
rules and it as an outcome in barbaric form we get an explanation of caste
atrocity. But it is not able to explain what happens between the two incidences of
mass violence. To further add taking it as an outcome of breaking of the norm is
also a partial view of explaining the social atrocity through violence. Here is an
attempt to understand and look into caste system, caste violence and atrocity
not as a relation based of norm following- breaking-and outcome. That is to say
we are not concerned with when did it happened and and looking it through end
of act. What my intention here is to understand and unfold it in regular practice.
As mentioned earlier and assumed by me that we ought not consider and
understand caste system and violence as that in relation of outcome and norm
breaking rather am more interested in understanding the gap between violence
or that period which might be considered as non-barbaric time of caste system
since between them violence does not appears. But the question still hangs if
these are non violence times following the nature of understanding caste based
violence then why does it re-appears. But more importantly in my opinion is the
fact that it re-appears only because we see it like that and thereby the violence
atrocity based explanation and further understanding this as outcome.

What would come out if we assume that this torture maintains the system?
Secondly, what would be to not to understand these incidences as outcome or
sudden non-desired outcomes or shocking outcomes rather understanding them
as the gradual large scale manifestation of regular practice which maintains the
system. Since in assuming or contemplation level it then appears that
Caste system in addition to rules of endogamy, untouchability and purity
pollution is maintained by the systematic practice of torture. This systematic
practice of torture keeps on reproducing itself based on the context and nature of
breaking of norm. The torture which is primary factor in this assumption is by its
nature calculated and exhibition based. The torture then appears as one of
primary factor in caste system.
The question could then be framed like how does caste system is maintained and
does the explanation of violence and atrocity (post-act) is sufficient enough to
explain the relation? Secondly, how should we conceptualize the periods
between two instances of violence? Thirdly, can torture provide a better
conceptual tool in understanding caste system?
