Alphas Take Charlotte

Summer 2015 brought the Alpha
Phi Alpha General Convention to
Charlotte, NC. Brothers from
across the nation (and some
from other nations) descended
upon the Queen City to engage
in official fraternity business, to
pursue personal and professional
development, and to enjoy
themselves, in general.
In-between important votes and
conversations, brothers and their
families were treated to health
and wealth forums, a fraternal
luncheon, and an entertaining

members of the BTL Young

1983, Urban Ministries works to

the poor, hungry, and homeless
in Durham. The six brothers
who attended helped prepare

I want to Thank You again
for this opportunity to serve as
your Chapter President for a
second fraternal year. I am
deeply humbled by your support and encouragement. My
hope is that I can continue to

There is much work to be

done this year! We have an

opportunity to really put our

beloved chapter in the forefront here in the State of
North Carolina, the Alpha
Southern Region and with the
National Office of Alpha Phi
Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
We are hosting the ANCA
54th District Conference along
with the undergraduate chapters, Gamma Beta, Kappa Omicron & Mu Zeta, and it is my
hope that every chapters
members will support this
endeavor not only with their

attendance but also with their

financial support. We are planning a very interactive District
Conference with the host

and the Durham Convention
Center. The Carolina Theatre
will be the venue for the ANCA Step Show and Ms. Black-n

served as pastor. Brother

Pinckney was elected to the
South Carolina House of Representatives in 1996 at the age
of 23. In 2000, he was elected
to the State Senate at the age
of 27. He was one of the
youngest African Americans in
South Carolina to be elected
to the state legislature. A

Washington Post columnist

called him a political spirit
lifter for surprisingly not becoming cynical about politics.
This Moment in Alpha History
honors the life and legacy of
Brother Pinckney. Rest well,
my good Brother, in Our
Chapter of Sweet Rest.

Upcoming Events

On June 6th, 2015, the Beta Theta

Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha
partnered with Habitat for Humanity
of Durham to help build a home on
Rosedale Avenue. Habitat for Humanity provides homeownership opportunities to low-income residents who
provide sweat equity (work hours)
during construction.

A total of four brothers assisted with

cutting and nailing siding for the
house on what was an extraordinarily
warm and sunny day. They worked
closely with several volunteers and a
family from Burma (providing their
own sweat equity) who will later own
a home on the adjacent lot.
The site manager expressed her gratitude and interest in working with the
fraternity in the future.
