The University has two campuses, both in fantastic
locations. Our City Campus is located in the city
centre and is the base for our award-winning
buildings the Rose Bowl and Broadcasting Place.
Our Headingley Campus is just 4.8 kilometres/
3 miles away set in a beautiful parkland with
historic buildings dating from 1752.

INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION
YEAR

10 WEEK PRE-SESSIONAL
ENGLISH

The International Foundation Year will give you the


skills to study an undergraduate degree. You will
develop the following areas (if your degree choice
requires this): English language, academic skills,
group work, cultural awareness, maths and a subject
module from your undergraduate degree choice.

This course is ideal if you need to improve your


English language skills before you start your chosen
degree. As well as developing your Academic English
and study skills, you will learn how to use the wide
range of resources available on campus and online to
support your studies and learning.

You will also be given access to online self-study


resources and allocated a personal tutor who you will
meet regularly. Successful completion of this course
will allow entry onto a selection of our undergraduate
courses.

This course offers extensive practice of academic


writing, reading, listening and note taking as well
as presentation and seminar skills. There is a
strong focus on preparing for successful university
study and understanding UK university culture,
conventions and expectations.

Entry requirements:
Successful completion of high school and IELTS
4.5 (with at least 4.5 in all skills).
Start dates: September and January
Length of study: 2 semesters
Class time: Minimum of 18 hours of class time per
week, plus 15 hours per week of self-study.
Class size: Maximum 20 students, except in the
Living in Britain lectures and some subject module
classes.

I chose this University because it seemed an


approachable university with friendly and helpful
staff, who offered me exactly what I was looking
for. The campus is lovely and the facilities too. I
enjoyed meeting people from different countries
and learning about the differences between
cultures.

Learning will take place through seminars and


tutorials as well as independent study. You will
have access to online self-study resources and
daily access to our language learning advisor. A
personal tutor will be assigned to you, who you will
meet regularly.
You will be assessed by a mixture of coursework:
researching and writing a longer piece of academic
work in your subject area, in-class tests and giving
a presentation.
Successful completion of the course will meet the
English language requirement of Leeds Beckett
University for courses requiring IELTS 6.0 or 6.5, so
you will not need to take another IELTS test.
Entry requirements: You will need a minimum of
IELTS 5.0 or 5.5 with no skill below 5.0.
Start dates: June and October each year.
Length of study: 10 weeks.
Class time: Minimum of 18 hours of class time per
week, plus 15 hours per week of self-study.

The Academic Skills Preparation for UK


Study course (4 week Pre-Sessional) is for
international and EU students who already hold
an unconditional offer for an undergraduate or
postgraduate course at Leeds Beckett University.

BA (Hons) English as a Foreign Language


with International Business

Through this preparation course you will develop


your Academic English and study skills and learn
how to use the wide range of resources available
on campus and online to support your studies and
learning.
You will develop and practise those vital academic
skills you will need to be successful on your course.
This will include effective reading, taking notes from
lectures, writing references and bibliographies, and
time management. By the end of the course you
will be fully aware of the expectations of university
study in the UK and the similarities and differences
between university study in your country and in
Britain.
Entry requirements: You will need to hold an
unconditional offer for an undergraduate or
postgraduate course at Leeds Beckett University.
Start date: August.
Length of study: 4 weeks.
Class time: Minimum of 15 hours of class time per
week, plus 15 hours per week of self-study.
Class size: Maximum 20 students.

These degree programmes give you the opportunity
to study English as a Foreign Language with modules
from a professional area. You will develop your English
language, study, research and employability skills,
as well as your subject knowledge in one of five
disciplines.
Alongside your language skills, you will gain a
comprehensive knowledge of British culture, social
institutions, politics and the business environment. You
will study your professional modules in lectures with
British students. Studying the English language with
your professional area will enhance your employability
in your chosen sector.
These courses are also available as one-year top up
programmes so that you can gain a British degree in
one academic year, if you have the relevant English
language level and academic background.
Entry requirements: UCAS Tariff points: 280 points
required. IELTS 6.0 with no skill below 5.5.
Start date: September
Length of study: Full-time 3 years. Part-time option
for EU students. Top up is 1 year full-time
Class time: Typically 10 -12 hours per week depending
on honours degree chosen and year of study and an
equal amount of self study.
Class size: Maximum 24 students in English classes.
Class sizes in the other subjects will vary.

INTERNATIONAL MASTERS
This combined two year Academic English and
Masters course offers an accelerated route for
international students with an HND, or equivalent,
in a subject related to their chosen masters
degree. In year one, in addition to Academic
English, you will study two modules in the faculty
of your chosen masters. In year two, you will
study the masters course of your choice.
The International Masters is offered with a variety
of postgraduate courses. Please check the online

The International Masters gives you one
unconditional offer for a combined English and
Masters programme.
International students will only need ONE visa for
this two-year course.

MA ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING


- IN LEEDS OR ONLINE
This course provides academic and professional
development for ELT practitioners looking for
career advancement in innovative teaching,
curriculum and creative materials development,
teacher education or training and other teachingrelated activities.
The course is designed for native and non-native
speakers of English with some experience of or
an interest in English language teaching. It is
available for study both in Leeds and online.
Key features of the course include practical
classroom experience, hands-on development of
multi-media resources, materials development
and the opportunity to pursue a specialism, such
as ESOL, English for Academic Purposes, Teaching
English to Young Learners or Teacher Training.
The assignments are designed to prepare you as
a professional in ELT.

Start date: September.

Entry requirements: English language level of at


least IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent) with no skill less
than 5.5. Relevant honours degree or equivalent
(normally from the area of the Social Sciences).

Length of study: 2 years.

Start dates: September and January.

Class time: Average of 16 hours per week of


Academic English and subject specific modules
in Year 1 plus an approximately equal amount
of self-study. Year 2 class time depends on the
masters chosen.

Length of study: 12 months (full-time) or 18 - 24


months (online learning).

Entry requirements: IELTS 5.5 (with no skill


below 5.5) and an HND or equivalent.

Class size: Maximum 20 students for English
