Lohmann Meat Broiler Stock Performance Objectives

Introduction
This booklet contains the performance objectives for the Lohmann Meat broiler
chicken to be used with the L.I.R. Broiler Management Programme. The performance
objectives represent production achievable under good management and environmental
conditions, and when feeding recommended nutrient levels. The figures included
represent the top 25% world wide flocks. Average performance may be 10 to 20%
lower.
Monitoring of performance within a broiler production operation gives the opportunity
to identify areas for improvement. The performance objectives should be used to
indicate the genetic potential of the Lohmann Meat broiler. Continuous increase in
performance results from the combination of genetic, management, nutritional and
veterinary improvements. Genetic selection in Aviagens pedigree programmes aims
to deliver balanced improvement in liveweight, FCR and liveability.
The components of yield will vary among processing plants depending on type of
equipment used and the exact portions being produced.
For further information on managing Lohmann Meat broilers, please consult your
local Technical Service Manager.

Lohmann Meat Broiler Stock Performance Objectives

Cost effective production of chicken meat depends on achieving good bird performance.
The following points are important to achieve optimum performance of the Lohmann
Meat broiler.

6 Key Points for better Broiler performance:

Maximise day old broiler chick quality by good management of hatching, storage
and transport conditions.

Ensure that both house and floor temperatures are adequate before, during and
after chicks arrival; monitor chick behaviour.

Prior to chick arrival, set up the brooding areas with plenty of supplementary
feeders and drinkers. Ensure that the chicks have easy access to these.

Achieve a first week bodyweight of 160 grams or greater by good management.

This will maximise growth and improve flock uniformity.

Plan and manage stocking density according to the house design (open or
closed).

The physical quality of the feed should not be that of mash or include a high
proportion of fines. Feed a good crumb/crumble as the starter ration. The
crumb size should gradually increase to a short/longer pellet as the bird develops.
