TheArchitecturalConservancyOntario(ACO)hasawardedboth2015PaulObermanAwards
forAdaptiveReUsetotwolandmarkLondonheritagebuildings:theLondonRoundhousein
SoHoandtheChisholmBuildingonDundasStreet.

Bothprojectsdemonstratewhatimagination,commitment,historicresearch,anddesignflair
canachieveintheadaptiverepurposingofheritagebuildings.Weareespeciallypleased
becauseboththeseprojectshavebeenaccomplishedinLondon'sdowntownandhopethatthey
willprovideinspirationforfuturesimilarinitiatives.saidMaggieWhalley,President,ACO

The2015PaulObermanAwardforAdaptiveReUse(Corporatecategory)willbepresentedto
ShawnAdamssonandDavidBillsonofEllipsisDigital/EngineSevenFourandPatrickAmbrogio
andSlavkoPrtenjacaofCreativePropertyDevelopmentsfortheirvisionaryadaptivereuseof
theLondonRoundhouse.

Builtin1887asaMichiganCentralRailroadlocomotiverepairshop,theLondonRoundhouse
laterservedastheSansoneFruitCompanyfor45yearsand,morerecently,theGreatWest
SteakHouserestaurantforoverthirtyyearsbeforebeingrebornasahitechofficebuilding.

ThedramatictransformationofthehistoricbuildingbyLondonsNicholsonSheffieldArchitects
involvedarestorationthathonoureditsarchitecturalintegrityaswellasarenovationthatwould
allowitflexibilityandgrowthinthefastpacedhitechindustry.Newinteriorspacesarenamed
theCabooseandtheEngineasatipoftheengineerscaptothebuildingsoriginalpurpose
formerbusinessesSansoneandGreatWestareacknowledgedinthenamesofnewoffices.

Ourgoalfromtheverybeginningwastofindaplacewhereourinvestmentandcommitment
wouldbeawinforourteams,awinfortheneighbourhood,andawinforheritagepreservation.
Thiswouldhavebeenimpossiblewithoutdedicatedandcommunitymindedpartnerslike
CreativePropertyDevelopmentsandNicholsonSheffieldArchitects.We'vealwayshadanoffice
butnow,forthefirsttime,wehaveahome.saidathrilledShawnAdamsson,V.P.Strategy,

The2015PaulObermanAwardforAdaptiveReUse(Individual/Familycategory)willbe
presentedtoSharonandHamoodyHassanfortheirpainstakingrenewaloftheChisholm
Buildingat142DundasStreetfortheirlawpracticeoffices.


HamoodyandIarethrilledandonceagainhumbledbytherecognitionofourproject.Wetruly
appreciatethefactthatothersalsoseethebeautyandutilityofthislovelybuilding!Weare
honouredtosharethisrecognitionwith[theLondonRoundhouseteam].saidanelatedSharon
Hassan.

BuiltforprominentdrygoodsmerchantAndrewChisholmin1864,thebuildingwasoneofthe
firstbrickstructureserectedafterafireinthe1840sdestroyedmanyofthewoodbuildingsalong
DundasStreet.Ithashousedavarietyofcommercialenterprisesandinrecentmemoryitwas
GrandmaLeesRestaurant.Thebuildingstoodvacantfor19yearsuntilitwaspurchasedby
HassanLawin2009.

HeritagefeaturesoftherestoredbuildingincludetheItalianatefaadeandwindows,original
floors,andaSunlightSoapghostsignonwhatwasoriginallyanexteriorwall.Replacementof
theoriginalskylightsuncoveredhiddenartifactsincludinglovelettersstashedwithabottleof
whiskyunderfloorboardsonthesecondfloor.

TheChisholmbuildingwasonceadowntownlandmarkduetotheprominentclockfaceonthe
upperfaadewhichChisholmcommissionedandpaidforaftercitycouncilofthedayrefusedto
investinatownclock.Theoriginalclock,toodamagedforuseandnowheldinMuseum
Londonscollection,willbereplicatedinfuture.

BothprojectswerenominatedfortheprestigiousannualawardsbytheLondonRegionbranch
oftheArchitecturalConservancyOntario,aprovincialheritageconservationorganizationwith
24branchesthatwasfoundedin1933.ThePaulObermanAwardsforAdaptiveReUsewere
createdinhonouroftheTorontoheritageconservationistanddeveloperwhodiedina2011
planecrashattheageof53.HeritageawardsintwelvecategorieswillbepresentedatACOs
9thAnnualAwardsDinnerattheArts&LettersClubinTorontoonNovember13.
