The Beauty Of Book Clubs

Ever wondered how to start a book club, or how to
find one to join? The beauty of book clubs is that they
can deepen our appreciation of literature and spark discussion beyond the themes of the books we are reading.
Bonus: they are also a perfect reason to get together with
our friends on a regular basis.
On Thursday, October 15, the Nelson Public Library
will host a presentation on the Beauty of Book Clubs as
part of the librarys ongoing Slocan Valley Outreach program. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event.
Val Mayes will moderate a panel of representatives from
book clubs in the Valley, who will discuss the different
formats that clubs can take, and the dos and donts for
starting one.
Outreach librarian Margaret Tessman will be on hand
to talk about library resources that are available to support
local book clubs. For example, did you know that library
members can order book club sets of five or ten copies
through the Nelson Library?
As usual, the Outreach librarys mobile collection of
books, CDs and DVDs for all ages will be available for
members to check out. Refreshments will be served.
The Beauty of Book Clubs will take place at 4 pm at
Passmore Seniors Lodge, 3650 Passmore Road. Watch for
the sandwich board on the highway. For more information contact the Nelson Public Library, 250-352-6333, or
Val Mayes, 250-226-7399.

Changes To RDCK Recycling Program

Residents of the RDCKs central sub-region will save
approximately $200,000 annually as the regional district
makes changes to its recycling program. The sub-region,
which spans from north of Marblehead to south of Salmo,
will see new front load bins at the RDCK recycling depots
as of October 19. The front load collection bins increase
collection efficiency as recyclable materials are compacted
en-route and multiple sites are serviced on a single route.
The rest of the RDCK adopted the front load collection
model in 2011 with great success.
RDCK directors and staff continue the process of
upgrading our resource recovery infrastructure, said
Tom Newell, Chair of the Central Resource Recovery
Committee. This revitalized recycling program, being
safer, more efficient and at a reduced cost to our tax payers, is one more huge step forward.
The public will no longer be required to climb stairs to
deposit recyclables. The materials that are collected remain
the same and all material, including cardboard, will be fully
commingled, in a single stream. A cardboard-only bin will

Following the changes to the depots on October 19, blue

World Food Day In Kaslo

WFD was founded by the United Nations Food &
Agriculture Organization in Quebec, October 16, 1945
and has been observed annually, since 1979. It was established to increase awareness of world hunger and poverty
and to inspire solutions for world change.
In North America, grassroots events & public awareness
campaigns engage diverse audiences in action against
hunger. This year, World Food Day will be the focus of
worship to which all are welcome, Sunday, October 18 at
St. Marks Church, 5th at C Avenue, Kaslo. Continuing
the season of harvest thanksgiving, our worship will give
thanks for all sustainable agriculture, consider the Canadian Foodgrains Bank and welcome as guest speaker, Patrick Steiner, who coordinates the Kaslo Food Hub.
We hope many home or community gardeners and all
who value the stewardship of the land and local food gardening will join this gathering at 9 am, to express gratitude
for the good earth and its abundant harvests we enjoy.

Balfour Transfer Station Re-Opened

The RDCK is pleased to announce the Balfour transfer
station reopened with full services Saturday, October 3.
Upgrades to the RDCKs Balfour waste transfer station
were an important part of the RDCKs 2010 Resource
Recovery Plan. Construction at the Balfour Transfer Station began August 3. Balfour will be open for regular winter operating hours of Monday, Wednesday and Saturday
from 10 am to 4 pm.
Construction at the Balfour Transfer Station involved
installation of a weigh scale and new waste bins. The new
bins are part of an efficient compacting waste transfer
system, which will reduce the costs and greenhouse gas
emissions associated with the RDCK Resource recovery
services. With the addition of the scale attendants will be
able to weigh the materials instead of estimating volumes.
This will allow residents to deposit their waste much faster,
reducing wait times and ensuring consistent pricing.
We are pleased that these upgrades have gone so
smoothly and that the transfer station will be more convenient and efficient for residents, says Tom Newell, Chair
of the Central Subregion Resource Recovery Committee.
If you have any questions please contact the RDCK at
250-352-6665 or check out our website at www.rdck.ca
For further information, please contact Mike Morrison,

2015 Business Walk For Small

Business Week
The Lower Columbia Regions first Business Walk event
is taking place this month during Small Business Week!
The Business Walk provides elected officials and economic
development partners to take the pulse of downtown by
connecting face to face with businesses. Representatives
from the Ministry, City Council, Chamber of Commerce,
and the Economic Development office will be going door
to door in Trail on October 19, Rossland on October 20
and Fruitvale on October 21 between 9:30 am -12:30 pm
to check in with as many of our regions businesses as
possible!
The Business Walk program involves a partnership
facilitated by the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills
Training, Municipal Leaders, Lower Columbia Initiatives
Corporation (LCIC), representatives from the Trail & District Chamber of Commerce and local service providers.
These volunteer walkers will go from business to business
asking owners or managers a couple of simple questions
about their business that will only take approximately
five minutes of their valuable time. Once as many businesses are visited as possible, the Economic Development
office (LCIC), will collect the information and provide a
summary and recommendations to participants and City
Council on the health of the local small businesses. Businesses that need assistance will receive a follow up visit
and be provided with assistance if necessary.
Business Walks is recognized as an Economic Development Best Practice by the Provincial Government.
Gathering community and business information is a
key ingredient to foster the areas economic growth and
expansion potential.
Business owners and managers will be receiving an
invite to participate in this important initiative and are
encouraged to be at their business in Trail on October
19, Rossland on October 20 and Fruitvale on October 21
between 9:30 am -12:30 pm, when the teams are engaged
in the Business Walk. By taking the time to answer just a
few questions, you will be providing valuable information
that the LCIC can use to guide future work plan initiatives
to support local business.

A Rare Musical Opportunity For

Young Singers...
A choir of young voices, 10 - 13 years, is being created to
perform in two seasonal concerts this upcoming December.
On December 18 and 19, classical guitarist and composer
Rita Deane and the vocal trio Ananta (Allison Girvan,
Nomi Kiss and Kathleen Neudorf) will collaborate in a
musical offering designed to inspire peace, love and shared
community during the holiday season. The concerts will
feature both traditional and newly composed music.
The choir will be directed by Allison Girvan (director
of corazn, VoixVive, and the Capitol Theatres summer
youth program). Rehearsals will be on Thursdays 4:30 5:30 pm from November 5 - December 17. The rehearsals
and both concerts will take place in Nelson.
This project is supported by a grant from the Columbia
Kootenay Cultural Alliance. There will be no charge to the
singers to participate in this project. However, if selected,
singers must be committed to attending all seven rehearsals as well as both concerts.
Auditions for singers between the ages of 10 and 13 will
take place in Nelson on Thursday, October 29. Selection
of singers will be based on the following criteria: An ability to match pitch, sing in tune, and hold a part against
another harmony part is necessary.
Singers should come prepared to sing a song of their
own choice in their comfortable range. Singers will be
asked to sing simple vocal exercises in the audition to
establish their comfortable vocal range and their ability to

New Education Saving Grant

The cost of pursuing post secondary education is not
low, and the price of a four-year university degree will
continue to rise year after year. With smart planning and
advice, plus a boost from the available government grants
and matching funds that make growing RESP savings
even easier, there has never been a better time for parents
to start saving for their childrens future.
BC Training & Education Grant:
Parents can now apply for the new British Columbia
Training and Education Savings Grant to help finance
their childrens post-secondary education or training.
With this grant, which was announced in 2013 and just
became available in August, the provincial government
will contribute $1,200 to eligible children born on or after
January 1, 2007. According to Central 1 Credit Union, the
trade association for credit unions in BC and Ontario,
credit unions are currently the only financial institution in
the province able to help parents apply for the new grant.
Canada Education Saving Grant:
With the Canadian Education Savings Grant, all contributors receive a 20% bonus on the first $2,500 of RESP
contributions each year, until the end of the year the child
turns 17. That means a students RESP could grow by an
extra $500 each year, up to a maximum of $7,200.
Canada Learning Bond:
The Canada Learning Bond offers qualifying lower
income families a one-time $500 RESP contribution,
plus an additional $100 each year until the child turns
15. Add it all up, and it can be worth as much as $2,000

in a students education fund. The Bond is available for
children born after December 31, 2003 into families who
receive the National Child Benefit Supplement as part of
the Canada Child Tax Benefit.
Quick RESP Facts:
Due to low participation rates, BC parents missed out
on nearly $385 million in RESP grants in 2014.
Last year, only 19% of all Canadian post-secondary students withdrew from RESPs to help fund their
education.
If current contribution and participation rates continue, BC parents could miss out on an average of $5,600
per eligible child.

Dance To Support
Syrian Child Refugees!
Mark your calendar for Saturday, October 24 for the Fall
Dance to support Syrian child refugees! The must-not-miss
festive event at the Argenta Hall begins with square dancing
at 3 pm, when the caf also opens to the flourish of accordion, fiddle, banjo and local callers: Promenade your partner; allemande lefat; heads start a left spin and windmill in!
A scrumptious lasagna and organic salad dinner with
jazz will follow at 5:30 - 7 pm; afterwards, the Silent Auction winners will be announced. Then the Jan Van Gold
Band will set up for dancing-til-late.
The benefit is hosted by the Argenta Friends Meeting, in
collaboration with residents of Kaslo, Shutty Bench, Shroeder
Creek, Lardeau, Meadow Creek, Johnsons Landing, Howser,
Cooper Creek, and Poplar Creek - demonstrating the community spirit that is alive-and-well in Kootenay Lake North.
Argenta Friends Meeting has identified a special school
for refugee children just across the border of Syria in Reyhanli, Turkey, to receive the benefitsproceeds. This school
currently has an enrollment of more than 2000 displaced
Syrian children, including orphans and disabled children.
The teachers in the school are also refugees from Syria.
The school seeks to rebuild trust, self-worth, compassion,
and open-mindedness and offers psychosocial counselling
and social relief to the children and their families, and its

The Langham Gallery Presents...

Susan Andrews Grace is an artist and poet who has
lived in Nelson since 2001. She is the author of five books
of poetry, most recently Philosopher at the Skin Edge of
Being (Signature Editions, 2013) and has exhibited her artwork extensively in both Canada and the United States. Ms.
Grace has undertaken a number of series over the years
which honor textile traditions and the use of various fibres
and other materials, in evocative and often unexpected
ways. Poetry, philosophy, science, feminist studies, history,
and an exacting approach to process coexist beautifully in
these works. Ms. Grace is currently exhibiting Underwritten at Gallery 2 in Grand Forks, until November 15 and
exhibiting Red Thread, Read Through at the Langham Gallery in Kaslo from October 9 November 22. There will be
an opening event on Friday, October 9, 7 - 9 pm.
Submitted by Arin Fay
overall aim is to establish an empowered new generation
with a democratic worldview.
Syrian child refugees suffer from trauma and serious
physical and psychological damage as a result of exposure
to severe violence and loss of loved ones in the war. Without the emotional and academic support of a nurturing
school community, out-of-school refugee children face a
higher risk of engaging in child labour, being radicalized by
extremist groups, and for girls, being forced into early marriage. The scale of the tragedy of the Syrian war is affecting
more than 12 million people and its devastating impact on
the education of its children is overwhelming. The number
of out-of-school Syrian children ages five-fourteen has skyrocketed tenfold, from 300,000 in 2012 to three million in
2015 according to the United Nations. More than half of
the Syrian refugee population has fled to Turkey. More than
85% of the 816,000 school age refugees live outside of camps,
without access to basic humanitarian aid and education.
A large turnout is expected and there will be a suggested
donation of $10 as well as a silent auction featuring painting, wildlife photography, furniture, and more.
Informative videos about the school will be showing at
the Hall. If you would like to donate items to the silent auction or help with baking cookies or lasagna, please phone
Pat, 250-366-4649. Lets make this a successful community
effort in supporting children who are very much at risk.

Celebrate West Kootenay Creative

Writing Education

Friendly and intense, historic and devout, Southeast

Asia is a warm embrace, from its sun-kissed beaches and
steamy jungles to its modern cities and sleepy villages.
(Lonely Planet)
Thursday, October 15 is the last of the Langhams 2015
Japanese Canadian Museum Asian Program Series. Join
long term Kaslo resident, Elizabeth Ross, in a Caf Langam - Inspired Ideas talk on her recent trip to Southeast
Asia. The audience will travel with Ross to Cambodia,
Mayanmar and Vietnam. Visit Angkor Wat and the temples of Siem Reap and stilt houses on Tonle Sap Lake in
Cambodia. Visit the temples of Bagan, and Shwedagon
Pagoda, Yangon, and the leg-rowing fishermen of Inle
Lake in Myanmar. Wonder through the Independence
Palace, Ho Chi Minh City, and explore the Mekong Delta,
the Cuchi Tunnels, Halong Bay, and the infamous Hao
Lo Prison (the Hanoi Hilton). In Vietnam learn about the
important ancient trading port of Hoi An.
Elizabeth Ross grew up in Ottawa and attended the University of Toronto when in 1971 she obtained a Bachelor
of Science Degree in Nursing. Restless and adventuresome, she moved to Kaslo in 1975 where she worked as a
Staff Nurse at the Victorian Hospital before taking on the
position of Public Health Nurse. Holding this position for
30 years, Ross retired in 2010.
Her love of people and places has taken her on many
travels over the years. Always interested in the well-being
of others, Ross travelled to Tanzania, Africa in 2009, where
she helped at a hospital in Kahama through the One Person Project. Since this time she has held annual fundraising events to assist with the purchase of equipment for
the Tanzania hospital. A strong advocate, Elizabeth also
volunteers with Grans to Grans, Stephen Lewis Foundation to help with AIDS in Africa, supporting grandmothers and their work with AIDS. African grandmothers are
central to the life of their communities. With almost no
support, they have stepped forward to care for millions of
children orphaned by AIDS, sometimes as many as ten to
fifteen in one household.

Three authors on Thursday, October 8 will celebrate

nearly 50 years of creative writing education in the West
Kootenay. Reading is at 7:30 pm as part of the Presentation Series of Nelsons Oxygen Arts Centre will be local
pioneer creative writing teacher Fred Wah and Nelsons
two newest writing instructors, Sonnet LAbbe and Leesa
Dean.
The event is free ($5 donation appreciated) and open to
the public at the Oxygen Art Centre, located at 320 Vernon Street, alley entrance.
Wah, who served as the Parliamentary Poet Laureate
2011 - 2013, taught from 1967 to 1989 in Nelson and Castlegar at David Thompson University Centre and Selkirk
College. He has published more than 20 books of poetry
and prose, including the Governor Generals Literary
Award-winning Waiting for Saskatchewan, and a prose
memoir Diamond Grill, about growing up in Nelson in
the 1950s, which won Albertas Howard OHagen Award.
Wah will be talking about and reading from a book
forthcoming later this fall: Scree: the Collected Earlier
Poems 1962 - 1991. Reading with Wah will be poet and
editor LAbbe, who is the instructor for the University of
BCs first-ever creative writing course in Nelson which
began September 25. She won the national Bronwen Wallace Award for emerging writers in 2000, and has two collections of poems from Torontos McClelland and Stewart
Publishers. She edited the annual anthology Best Canadian Poetry 2014, and has taught for the University of
Toronto, UBCs Kelowna campus, and Vancouver Island
University.
LAbbe most recently was writer-in-residence at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario. While in
Nelson she serves as the UBC Nelson Rotary Writer-inResidence, providing advice and feedback on manuscripts
to aspiring local writers. Information on how to set up an
appointment with LAbbe is on the Elephant Mountain
Literary Festival website (www.emlfestival.com) under
the Writer-in-residence tab.
Rounding out the evening reading will be Dean, who
teaches an introductory creative writing course for Selkirk College this fall in Nelson. A graduate of the University of Guelphs MFA program in writing, Deans fiction,
non-fiction, poetry and interviews have been published
in The New Quarterly, Matrix, and Lemon Hound among
other journals, and she is currently the interviews editor
for the Humber Literary Review. Her first book of short
stories will appear from BCs Brindle and Glass Publishing in 2016. Dean is a member of the organizing committee for Nelsons 2016 Elephant Mountain Literary Festival.
The Festival is a co-sponsor of the October 8 reading.

Aging In The Kootenays

Learning Event
The Association of Kootenay-Boundary Local Governments (AKBLG) is partnering with the Columbia Basin
Rural Development Institute (RDI) to host a learning event
focused on regional demographic shifts relating to our
regions aging population. These shifts will create new challenges and opportunities for our region. The event will bring
local government, education, health and seniors advocacy
leaders together to learn more about emerging opportunities and innovative solutions relevant to our region.
Our region has a larger share of seniors than the provincial average with 20% of our population over the age
of 65 compared to the provincial average of 16%. It is
projected that seniors will comprise 29% of our population by 2041.
It is important that our region understand the challenges and opportunities this demographic shift will cause,
including a projected total of 23,500 job openings due to
retirement by 2022. That represents 80.4% of job openings

over the next seven years highlights Regional Innovation

Chair Dr. Terri MacDonald. How can we work together
to ensure these job opportunities are harnessed and the
knowledge is effectively passed along to the next generation? How can we best structure our health care services
and infrastructure to ensure our seniors can age in place?
The learning event will feature a keynote presentation from BC Seniors Advocate, presentations exploring
demographics and related implications, why we choose to
live/stay here, health service implications and emerging
policy issues, and economic development impacts. The
event will conclude with an innovative solutions panel
and discussion of next steps for our region.
The challenge of an aging demographic is not unique
in rural regions, says MacDonald. The recently released
State of Rural Canada report states, population aging and
the recruitment of a next generation workforce together
require investments that build robust new development
foundations. The needs of our residents are important
to local governments. And needs change as people age.
AKBLG is taking action to educate our members about
these issues and is leading the way to explore collaborative
solutions for rural areas, says Deb Kozak, Chair of the
Association of Kootenay Boundary Local Governments
and Mayor of Nelson.
Join us for a learning event that is sure to motivate some
interesting dialogue. Event is October 7, 9:30 am - 3:30
pm at the Warfield Community Hall. Register by calling
250-365-1208 or emailing castlegarce@selkirk.ca Registration fee is $75 (includes lunch).
