Instructions: This paper consists of SIX (6) questions. Answer any FIVE (5) questions in the
answer booklet provided. All questions carry equal marks.
Question 1
(a)

Two events are such that P( A) 0.891 and P( B) 0.109 . Find P( A B) if


(i)

event A and B are mutually exclusive.

event A and B are exhaustive.

( iii ) event A and B are independent.

(b)

The weights of Christmas cards posted by Miss-Soong-Baby are normally distributed


with mean 20g. It is found that the weights of 94% of the cards are within 12g of the
mean.
(i)

Find the standard deviation of the weights weigh of the cards.


(3 marks)

( ii )

Find the probability that a randomly chosen card weighs more than 13g.
(2 marks)

( iii ) Find the probability that a randomly chosen card weighs between 8g and 32g.
(3 marks)
(c)

The daily demand for a Star Newspaper in a bookshop has a Poisson distribution
with mean 3.8 . Find the probability that in a day there are exactly fifty copies
requested.

(d)

A biased die was thrown 20 times and the number of time a number 5 is observed was
noted. This experiment was repeated many times and the average number of times a
number 5 was observed was found to be 4.8. Find the probability that in the next 20
throws the number of times a number 5 is observed will be less than three.

Draw a tree diagram showing all the possible outcomes and their probabilities.

Find the probability that Miss Soong-Baby did not have peanut jam for breakfast.
(2 marks)

( iii ) Given that Miss Soong-Baby did not have peanut jam for breakfast, find the
probability that she had toast.
(2 marks)

(c)

A bag contains 10 Mashimaro of which 7 are green and 3 are white. A Mashimaro is
picked at random from the bag and its colour is noted. The Mashimaro is not replaced. A
second Mashimaro is then picked. Find the probability that
(i)

the first Mashimaro is green.

( ii )

the first Mashimaro is green and the second Mashimaro is white.
