Nigellasativahaslongbeentoutedasanaturalantibioticandin1997researchersatthe
DepartmentofPharmacy,UniversityofDhaka,Bangladesh,conductingastudyinwhich
theantibacterialactivityofthevolatileoilofblackseedwascomparedwithfive
antibiotics:ampicillin,tetracycline,cotrimoxazole,gentamicinandnalidixicacid.
Theblackcumin(Nigellasativa)oilprovedtobemoreeffectiveagainstmanystrainsof
bacteria,includingthoseknowntobehighlyresistanttodrugs.V.cholera,E.coli(a
commoninfectiousagentfoundinundercookedmeats),andallstrainsofShigellaspp.,
exceptShigelladysenteries.MoststrainsofShigellahavebeenshowntorapidlybecome
resistanttocommonlyusedantibioticsandchemotherapeuticagents.
AIDS
Dr.HaqinresearchonhumanvolunteersattheDepartmentofBiologicalandMedical
ResearchCenterinRiyadh,SaudiArabiashowedthatblackseedenhancedtheratio
betweenhelperTcellsandsuppressorTcellsby55%witha30%averageenhancement
ofthenaturalkillercellactivity.

TheseresultsareeffectiveenoughtoconsidertheoilbeingusedinthetreatmentofAIDS
andthefindingsofthispapercaughttheattentionoftheArchivesofAIDSwherethey
weredulypublished.

AttheKingFaisalUniversity,SaudiArabia,in2001DrAlGhamdiinvestigatedblack
seedsantiinflammatory,analgesicandantipyreticactivities.HeconcludedThisstudy
therefore,supportsitsuseinfolkmedicinebothasanalgesicandantiinflammatoryagent

Theyconcludedtheadditionofblackseedtothefeedofpigeonscouldactasanimmuno
protectiveagentwhenchronicadministrationofantibioticsisconsidered.

NigellasativaiscommonlyusedinmostAsiancountriesforthetreatmentofasthma.
Nigellone(acarbonylpolymerofthymoquinone)hasprovedtobeanexcellent
