1. HIGH VOLTAGEWARNING
At several points in the scanner unit and dlsplay CRT mount of the
radar, there are high voltages enough to ki11 a person coming into
direct contact with thern. Although the equlpment 1s designed to
avoid danger in ordinary operation, care should be taken during the
maintenance works inside the units. Turn off the shiprs main swiLch
when checking the circuits
or replacing components. Even after the
radar is switched off, some capacitors may take several minutes Lo
discharge. Before touching the magnetron and/or CRT HV circuits,
make sure to ground the capacitors with a clip cord or the 1lke.

2. MICROWAVE
HAZARI)
Take care to avoid possible harmful effects
of mi-crowave radiation
valnerfrom the radar to a human body. The eyes are particularly
able to microwave. Never look directly
into an open waveguide radiating
can upset some
the power. Radar and other R.F. radiations
cardiac pacemakers. If a user of cardiac pacemaker suspects a mu1function,
of Lhe anturn off the equipment and leave the vicinity
tenna irnmediately. Whenever it is necessary to work on the scanner
unit,
always set the controls

MARINE RADAR MD_3210 / 3220

1.

GENERAL
Koden MD-32L0/3220 series is a highly efficient
marine radar which conform
Lhe IMO standards Lo be used for a primary radar of fishing
boal, workboal,
and other vessel less than 10,000 gross weight Lons. The syslem consists of
only two units,
i.e.
the anLenna and display. Excepl for magnetron and CRT,
all
Lhe active
componenls are solid
state which maintain high reliabiliLy
and mainLenabilitv.
The radar display uses a 20-inch diagonal high resolution
green monochrome
CRT. It employs X-Y coordinates
process the radar information
to digitally
and diqnlav Lhe image with a built-in
microprocessor. The radar screen is
divlded into number of picture
elemenls, so ca1led pixels.
Each pixel
is
assigned wilh X-Y coordinates which corresponds to Lhe memory address. The
radar return
echoes in polar coordinates
for every pulse Lransmission are
converLed inlo X-Y coordinates
i-n accordance wiLh Lhe distance and azimuth.
The distance
is oblained from the time duralion
between transmission
and
recepllon
of pulse, while the azimuth is given from the antenna unil.
The
coordinates
converted dala is stored inLo memory and Lhen read oul to display Lhe irnage in a raster
scan melhod allowing the picLure to be monitored
by p1ura1 persons under daylight
condiLion without viewing hood. According
to the LransrnitLing power, system is classified
into Lwo models as be1ow.

2.I .I Aerial
The antenna unils of MD-3210 and MD-3220 are respectively provided with a
6-foot aerial for transmitting and receiving radiowave. The aerial is a non
resonant type slotted array waveguide whlch radiates and receives an X-band
horizonLal polarization microwave. One end of the aerial is connected to
the magnetron via rotary joint and circ-u1ator, while the other end is terM D - 3 2 I 0 /3 2 2 0 S e r v i c e M a n u a l - 0 1

2.1.2 Antenna motor

The antenna motor rotates at a speed of 2,160 rprn. It has built-in
15:1 reduction gears, and the plnion shaft is coupled to the main gear with reduction rate of 6: I to rolate
the aerial
at 24 rpm. The motor is powered from
24 V DC with power consumption of 15-watt. A photo-interrupLer
is mounled
on the motor to generate azimuth (AZI) pulses. Fig. 2.I.2 shows a simplified schematic of the antenna motor assembly.

A lead switch associated wlth a magnet is provided for generaLing the

At the moment when the rnagnet rnounted
on the main gear passes by the lead switch, the contact closes and gen*

The signal is fed to the buffer

of the shaft.
As the motor normally rotates at
a speed of 36 revolutions
per second, the repetition

72 pps. The aerial
is rotated at one 90tfr of the motor revolution
with
the built-in

are produced per one revolution
of the aerial.
The signal is fed to the

V i deo Memory

One chlp of the video RAM (TC5242562) is a device ca11ed 'dua1 port RAM'
commonly used for memory of images. In addition
to ordinary IIO port, it
has series data output port to deliver
the data in series.
The memory
consists
of RAM and SAM (series
access memory) portions,
each of them
is further
divided into four blocks. One block comprises 5I2 x 5L2 bits
R A I ' Ia n d 5 L 2 b i t s S A M . W h e n r e a d i n g t h e c o n t e n t s o f R A M , 2 , 0 4 8 b i t s m e m o ries for one CRT sweep line (5I2 in four blocks) are transferred
to respective SAM in para11e1 as shown in Fig. 2.2.2.6.
The data in SAM can
be read out in series,
like a shift
register,
by the series clock SC.
Four bits para11e1 output of SAM is then fed to a paral1el/series
con(F915) to finally
verter
deliver
the data in series.
Once the data is
transferred
from RAM to SAM, both memory portions
become independent.
That means, during relatively
long period when the data is being read
from SAM, RAM can be freely
read or written
by CPU control.

In a conventional
method, one radar video memory area was directly
up-dated regarding the existence
or not of the echo signals on the

This method has a disadvantage that the
radar information
in the pixels near the sweep center may be reduced.
The reason is that such a pixel

the latest

same pixel is 1ost. In order to improve such disadvantage, the memory

Read/Write Method of Radar Video Menory

f'lD-32I0/ 322A Service Manual-OI

Two radar memories are read simultaneously

and composed as shown in
the drawing. In this method, writing
any pixel does not affect
previous stored memory and loslng target
near scope center is avoided.
When the radar sweep origin
with the display centdoes not coincide
of, for example when off-centering
is turned ofl, CPU generally
calculates appropriate
transferring
amount of video images from Znd buffer to video RAM. This method, however, gives heavy duty to CPU espe'true

motiont mode, ES it
should continuously
carry out
such calculations.
In this radar,800-bit
memories per one sweep are
transferred

every time to
extent of
the video RAM, covering
image. When reading out the data from RAM on the other

hand, the portion of memories outside Lhe radar scope area is masked
