BIOL230W Exploration Homework Week 1: Organelles

Access ID: smk5736

Part 1: Organelles
Use the Wikipedia article Organelles to answer the following questions in two sentences or less.
1. What is the definition of an organelle?
A tiny cell structure that does a specific job in a cell.
2. It is debated amongst cell biologists on how to use the term organelle. What structures are
considered organelles in the strictest (most limiting) use of the term? What features do they share?
The two types of organelles are membrane bound, and non-membrane bound.
3. In a more common use of the term (what we use for this class), organelles are described as being
membrane-bound or non-membrane bound organelles. Using the information found in the
Organelle article, fill out the chart below of major organelles. For structure, list membrane-bound
or non-membrane bound. For function, summarize in one sentence. You can always click the link
to an organelle page to read more about its function.

Part 2: Endomembrane System

Use the first two sections of the Wikipedia article Endomembrane System to answer the following
questions in two sentences or less.
1. What organelles are considered part of the endomembrane system?
The nuclear envelope, ER, golgi apparatus, vacuoles, vesicles, lysosomes, endosomes, and the
cell membrane.
2. What macromolecule is the major component of membranes?
The most abundant macromolecules are the phospholipids.
3. Do all organelles of the endomembrane system have the same lipid composition?
No, the sorting and distributing the golgi apparatus does creates differences in the lipid and
protein composition.
4. Why are the organelles called a system (hint what is the definite of a system)?
The organelles are all connected either by contact or vesicle transport and make up the
endomembrane system.
Part 3: Course Syllabus
Use the course syllabus to answer the following questions.
1. If you notice on the fifth week of class that you are missing clicker points for the second week, what
should you do?
Contact the instructional team about the problem right away because you only have two week
period to contact them.
2. If you receive 3 points out of 5 on a homework assignment, what do you need to do in order to improve
your score on that assignment?
Visit the LA during their office hours within 2 weeks of the original due date with the completed
homework corrections.
3. When is the Exploration Homework typically due each week?
They are usually due the following Monday before class.
4. When is the Scientific Literature quiz typically due each week?
They will be due the following Friday before class for the daytime lecture section.
5. What is the number of your Homework Dropbox in ANGEL (determined by your last name) and what
is the name of your grading LA?
My HW Dropbox is #11 & the LA is Bobby Mullin.
