The Syrian Arab Republic is located in Southwestern Asia, north of the
Arabian Peninsula in the Middle East, at the eastern end of the
Mediterranean Sea. It is bordered by Turkey on the north, Lebanon and
Palestine on the West, Iraq on the east, and Jordan on the South. Its total
area is 185.180 sq km. The highest point in Syria is Mount Hermon (2.814
m) on the Lebanese border. The climate is hot and dry in summer and
rainy in winter. Damascus (Asham) is the capital pf the country but Aleppo
is the largest city.
Syria has a population of about 24 million inhabitants. It became
independent on April 17th, 1946. The official language is Arabic. This
country is famous for its historical monuments such as the Citadel of Salah
Ed-dine, the Ancient city of Basra, Umayyad Mosque and Aleppo Citadel.
