subscribersanestimated60,000readersandthewebsitereachesthousandsmore,including
grassrootsactivists,publiclandmanagers,tribalofficials,governmentpolicymakers,educators,
studentsandinterestedcitizens.TheLosAngelesTimeshaswrittenthatHighCountryNewsis
"themostinfluentialenvironmentaljournalintheMountainWest,"andaccordingtoNewsweek,
"HighCountryNewsisamustforanyonefollowinglanduseissueswestofthe100thmeridian."

PositionDescription:Everyyear,HighCountryNewsoffersfourtosixinternshippositions,
eachsixmonthslong,startinginJuneandJanuary,andayearlongfellowship,startingeach
January.Weprovidefreehousinganda$220perweekstipendforinternsandfreehousingand
a$375perweekstipendforfellows.Tohelpdefraymovingcosts,anadditional$500travel
stipendisavailableuponsuccessfulcompletionoftheinternship.

OurinternsandfellowsareakeypartoftheHCNteam;asidefromafewminortaskssuchas
sortingthemailandansweringphones,internsspendmostoftheirtimeresearching,
interviewing,writing,anddevelopingcontentbothforprintandonline.Weprideourselveson
fairness,accuracyandgoodwriting,andweexpectnolessofourinterns.Allinternsandfellows
workwiththestaffeditorstowritenewsstoriesforthewebsiteandforthenewsmagazine,
ranginginlengthfrom250to1,600words.Dependingontheirexperienceandability,theymay
alsogettheopportunitytowritea2,500to5,000wordfeaturestory.Oureditingprocessis
rigorousallcopygoesthroughtwolayersofeditinganditisnotunusualforastorytoseesix
oreightdrafts.ReportingisgenerallyconductedoverthephoneandtheInternet,butwedohave
moneytosendinternsandfellowsintothefieldatleastoncetodoonthegroundwork.

LearningOutcomes:Ourinternsandfellowsgoontobecomeleadersinjournalismand
politics.Theypursuecareersasreporters,editors,educators,lawyers,policymakersand
freelancewriters.

Qualifications:Forallofourpositions,abachelor'sdegreeorequivalentandsomeprior
journalismexperienceand/oreducationispreferred.Wealsopreferapplicantswhoarefamiliar
withHighCountryNewsandwhohavelivedintheWestandknowitsenvironmentaland
communityissues.Photographicexperienceandfamiliaritywithaudioandvisualprogramssuch
asFinalCutProandFlash,aswellasradioorvideoexperienceareallpluses.Westrongly
encourageNativeAmericanjournalists,Hispanicjournalistsandthosefromotherunder
representedbackgroundstoapply.Ourfellowshipisdesignedforjournalistswithexperiencethat
mayprecludethemfromaninternshipandwhomayhavesomethingextra,intermsof
experience,tobringtoHighCountryNews.
