This publication documents two years
of activities at L'cole de design Nantes
Atlantique between 2013 and 2015.
It is divided into 10 chapters, reflecting
our core values about design, design education
and the role of design in our societies.

L'ouvrage est divis en 10 chapitres, renvoyant
aux valeurs fondamentales qui nous animent
propos du design, de l'enseignement
du design et de son rle dans nos socits.

In 1998, with the help of local and regional


authorities, L'cole de design Nantes
Atlantique was built on the Chantrerie
campus amongst some top-tier higher
education establishments (grandes coles):
the foundations for an exciting adventure
in development. L'cole de design has
become a benchmark institution in the
region, in France and all over the world,
with 1200 students in 2015 on the schools
three sites in Nantes, Shanghai and Delhi.
The teaching program has become
increasingly professional and international
and partnerships with companies
and institutions have been strengthened.
Student projects are ever more sophisticated,
evolving from the creation of concepts to
real and tangible innovations.
Budding designers have a new sense
of responsibility, and now understand that
ideas even the most brilliant are not
enough unless you bring them to life.

has thus become a center for innovation
where designers are entrepreneurs
developing projects to serve companies
and society as a whole. It is a forum
for connections and exchange in a broad
range of disciplinesThe creation of the
design-led research chair on Connected
Environments in 2014 reflects this
development. The pivotal role of the designer
is to generate sound ideas and to give
them meaning and value at a time when
the future is uncertain and the notion
of progress needs to be redefined.
En 1998, grce aux collectivits territoriales,
L'cole de design Nantes Atlantique
sinstallait sur le campus de la Chantrerie
parmi de prestigieuses grandes coles :
le socle dune formidable aventure
de dveloppement. Lcole de design
est devenue un tablissement de rfrence
sur le territoire, en France et dans le monde
entier, avec 1200 tudiants en 2015 sur
ses 3 sites de Nantes, Shanghai et Delhi.
Le programme pdagogique sest
professionnalis et internationalis,
les partenariats avec les entreprises
et les institutions se sont consolids.
Les projets des tudiants voluent,
passant de la cration de concepts
de relles innovations tangibles.

et de partage avec les disciplines les plus
diverses La cration de la chaire de
recherche par le design Environnements
connects en 2014 consacre cette
volution. Travailler l'mergence des ides
justes, leur donner sens et valeur, tel est
le rle cl du designer au moment o lavenir
est incertain et o la notion de progrs doit
tre redfinie.

based on numerous exchanges between
education, research and the business world,
thanks to closely-knit ties with the industry.

A VARIETY OF COURSES
& TEACHING METHODS
We specialize in teaching design
via standard courses, work-study
programs and continuing education:
Masters Degree in Design certified by
the French Ministry of Higher Education:
undergraduate courses are now divided
into 4 majors based on the different
design professions (Spatial Design,
Graphic Design, Interaction Design
and Product Design); postgraduate
courses are organized around topicoriented MDes programs focusing on
contemporary social and economic
issues, with possible double degrees;
work-study learning run by the Vocational
Training Center dedicated to Creation
and Industrial Innovation. These courses
lead to BTS (2-year vocational
diplomas), work-study Bachelors
degrees and Masters degree in Design;
continuing education.

was founded in 1988, and has been
located on the Atlanpole La Chantrerie
technological campus in Nantes (France)
since 1998. The only institution of its
kind in Western France, our school
has been following an international,
outward-looking policy for over
a decade:
internationalization of the curricula:
welcoming foreign students, facilitating
student exchanges to promote
the international dimension of our
Nantes-based site;
international development: China Studio
in Shanghai (China) and India Studio
in Delhi (India), and signing of international
partnerships to spread our know-how
on a worldwide scale;
gaining international fame: participating
in networks and international events
to give value to the projects carried
out by our students and the knowledge
produced within our institution.

Since January 2014, the Responsible Innovation program at Lcole de design


Nantes Atlantique is backed up by a new research platform called Care.
Led by Gal Guilloux (engineer, designer, author of a doctoral thesis on the question
of integrating use value into design, and leading expert in the integration of users in design),
Care focuses its research activities on the user, independence and improvement of quality
of life for all, from children to the elderly. The close examination of these research
perspectives with the concrete involvement of targeted users has already enabled
Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique to sign high value-added partnerships at both a national
and international level. For example, the TANGO project (Towards A New InterGenerational
Openness), backed by the European Commission, was developed by students on the
Responsible Innovation Masters program and the Graphic Design undergraduate program
in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano (Italy) and Aalto University School of Arts (Finland).

NB: Responsible Innovation was divided into two separate programs in 2015, Sustainable
Innovation and Health & Social Innovation.
Depuis janvier 2014, le programme Innovation responsable de Lcole de design
Nantes Atlantique, est adoss une nouvelle plateforme de recherche intitul Care.
Pilot par Gal Guilloux, ingnieur-designer auteur dune thse de doctorat sur la question
de lintgration de la valeur dusage dans le design et personnalit rfrente sur lintgration
des usagers dans la conception, Care centre ses axes de recherche sur lutilisateur, lautonomie
et lamlioration de la qualit de vie pour tous, des enfants aux personnes ges. La mise en
perspective de ces angles de recherche avec une implication concrte des utilisateurs cibls
a dj permis Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique de signer des partenariats haute valeur
ajoute, aussi bien au niveau national qu linternational. Le projet TANGO (Towards A New
InterGenerational Openness), soutenu par la Commission Europenne, a t ainsi ralis par
des tudiants du cycle master Innovation responsable et de loption design graphique en
cycle bachelor en collaboration avec le Politecnico di Milano (Italie) et Aalto University School
of Arts (Finlande).

Federation (FHF), the Ministry for
the elderly and independent living,
and the Caisse nationale de
la solidarit pour lautonomie
(the French national funding agency
for the elderly and handicapped),
about twenty students from
the Responsible Innovation Masters
course worked on stigmatizing
conditions for elderly people.
The project combined compassionate
design and immersion in the field which
helped formalize innovations for products
identified by carers of the elderly (walking
frames, remote alarm systems, tableware,
hospital beds, etc.) In May 2013 at the
Salons de la sant et de lautonomie (Health
& Independence trade shows), five students
were awarded prizes by a jury made up of
federations, associations, the ministry,
the Pays de la Loire Center for Aging,
industrialists and specialist designers.

In September 2014, 9 projects


conducted by seven students from
the Responsible Innovation MDes
program, and two young graduates,
were met with great enthusiasm
by 70 stakeholders from the Silver
Economy market who attended
the exhibition at the Maison Rgionale
de lAutonomie et de la Longvit
in Nantes. Taking into account specific
needs and expectations of senior citizens,
the students came up with solutions
to improve the daily life of elderly people.
A tool to facilitate intergenerational
relationships, exploitation of knowledge,
adapted products, a dedicated application:
several projects could well be developed
thanks to the networking that took place
at the exhibition.

The prospective work carried out by the READi Design Lab with Toulouse-based
start-up Sigfox on the Internet of Things, and the Sustainable Cities Design Lab
on the role of banks with Banque Populaire Atlantique, is being extended.
The Banque Populaire Atlantique-LIPPI Chair on Connected Environments
is beginning its experimental work with the support of two partners who know
all about tomorrows challenges. On June 23, 2014, Olivier de Marignan (General Director
of Banque Populaire Atlantique), Julien Lippi (Managing Director of French company LIPPI)
and Christian Guellerin (Director of Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique) signed an agreement
for the schools first research chair. The signature took place at the Creative Arts District Cluster
(SAMOA) in Nantes. Urban-scale experiments on systems for capturing and measuring data
in urban areas, based on hypotheses defined by a service design approach, therefore serve as
a base for a prospective study of uses related to urban issues (transport, energy, commerce,
leisure activities, economic activities, etc.). Operational demonstrators which make it possible
to generate new knowledge, both in terms of innovation methodologies and use assessments.
This has a real added economic value which should lead to the creation of innovative companies!
Prolongement des travaux prospectifs effectus par le READi Design Lab
avec la startup toulousaine Sigfox dans le domaine de linternet des Objets
et par le Ville durable Design Lab sur le rle de lagence bancaire avec la Banque
Populaire Atlantique, la chaire Environnements connects Banque Populaire
Atlantique - LIPPI entame ses exprimentations avec le soutien de deux
partenaires convaincus des enjeux de demain. Le 23 juin 2014, Olivier de Marignan
(directeur gnral de la Banque Populaire Atlantique), Julien Lippi (directeur gnral de
la socit LIPPI) et Christian Guellerin (directeur gnral de Lcole de design Nantes
Atlantique) ont sign au Cluster du Quartier de la cration (SAMOA), une convention pour
cette premire chaire de recherche de lcole. Ainsi, des exprimentations lchelle urbaine
autour des systmes de captation et de mesures dans lespace urbain, partir dhypothses
dusage dfinies par une approche de design de service, servent de socle une prospective
dutilisation lie aux enjeux urbains (transports, nergie, commerce, loisirs, activits conomiques, etc.).
Des dmonstrateurs oprationnels qui permettent dentrevoir des connaissances nouvelles,
autant en termes de mthodologie dinnovation que dvaluations des usages. Une vritable
valeur ajoute conomique qui devrait dboucher sur la cration dentreprises innovantes !

The Banque Populaire Atlantique LIPPI Chair on Connected Environments
is a three-year program enabling
Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique
to consolidate and expand its expertise
on experimental research on capture
and measurement systems in urban
areas a real source of urban
transformation. Hardly a day goes
by when the subject of digital technology
doesnt come up from an ethical and
methodological point of view, thanks
to the opportunities offered by generalized
data capture. An inescapable turning point
in the evolution of our society, this digital
revolution is the object of the chair.
Its purpose is to share methodologies for
designing connected services or spaces,
particularly with respect to planning urban
or public spaces. Constant monitoring,
final degree projects, workshops, specific
experiments and publications not only our

of Technology of Shanghai University),

The progression in the quantity
and diversity of information at our
fingertips, particularly since the advent
of Web 2.0 and Open Data, calls for
methods and tools to help us interpret
this information. The Information Design
course (part of the Digital Culture MDes
programs offered by Lcole de design
Nantes Atlantique) is based on research
combining data formatting and design
of innovative services. Run by Matthias

a multitude of possibilities for creating

Staff and students from the READi Design
Lab have been supporting the open data

Gaining course-related skills,

of work. To ensure a complete
learning program, the school
has implemented a professional
internship policy to make it easier
for graduates to find their first job.

To make the most of their studies at Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique,


students must have a solid understanding of the business world and the fields
of design-led innovation appropriate to the company, depending on their interests.
Our teaching program allows for progressive immersion in the professional world
of creation by offering three internship periods between the second and final year of study.
The internship in the first year of the MDes program must be carried out abroad, either
in a company or a partner school. This organization is ideal for trying out different types
of company (in-house design, agencies, SMEs, etc.) and helps define the best strategic
choice for the final internship. This is a very important consideration since over half of our
graduates have a job at the end of their studies and, for a large majority (85%), it is thanks
to their final internship. The school gives students help and guidance throughout the
process and works closely with them in their search for internships. The recruiter should
immediately be able to recognize the potential of a student from the organization and
layout of their curriculum vitae and portfolio, but also from their professional and creative
attitude particularly when first contacting the company.

des tudiants. Notre programme pdagogique permet une immersion progressive
dans le monde professionnel de la cration en proposant trois priodes de stages entre
la deuxime et la dernire anne dtudes. Le stage de premire anne de cycle master
est obligatoirement raliser linternational, en entreprise ou en sjour dtudes.
Cette chronologie, idale pour tester diffrentes typologies dentreprises (design intgr,
agences, TPE, PME, etc.), aide dfinir le meilleur choix stratgique pour le stage final.
Un enjeu de taille puisque plus de la moiti de nos diplms ont un emploi la fin de leurs
tudes et la trs grande majorit (85%) le doit au stage de fin dtudes. Lcole encadre
ltudiant tout au long de son parcours en accompagnant troitement la recherche de
stages. Le recruteur doit voir instantanment le potentiel dun(e) tudiant(e) par lorganisation,
le graphisme de son curriculum vitae et du portfolio mais galement par une attitude
professionnelle et crative, notamment lors de la prise de contact avec lentreprise.

Although information technologies have been part of our everyday lives


for over twenty years, interaction design remains a key factor in digital innovation
and the design of interactive products and services. Since 1999, Lcole de
design Nantes Atlantique has been developing its training program in the
field of interaction design. In 2010, it created the READi laboratory for research and
experimentation; a winning combination of pedagogy and top-level expertise which is rated
by both partner companies and companies who take interns. Websites, mobile applications,
intuitive browsing on touch screens, information mapping, applications using virtual
or augmented reality the pedagogy is based on a highly innovative approach which has
already won over many companies like Orange, Bodet, VIF, Alcatel Lucent, Wiztivi,
La Banque Populaire, Technicolor, Le Relais Thalasso de la Baule, Sigma, Google,

In the last few years, design


has gone far beyond the scope
of industrial creation to become
a discipline which facilitates discussion
with citizens about public projects.
Thus, Carole Garry, Head of the Citizens
Rail program in the Pays de la Loire
region, approached Lcole de design
Nantes Atlantique to ask for its involvement
in a project where design is a mediator
between a local authority and the citizens.
Eighteen 3rd year undergraduate students
in Spatial Design (supervised by Lydie
Morand and David Comy) worked on the
project and came up with nine concepts
for the rehabilitation of Penhot train

station in Saint-Nazaire. The station has


become an example of design at the service
of public policy. In the spring of 2013, this
joint project with RFF, Gares et ConnexionsSNCF and the Pays de la Loire region gave
rise to a meeting involving all the project
stakeholders. In the course of this meeting,
the feedback from the public consultation
was analyzed and one of the proposed
concepts was selected. Sylvain Toldo and
Antoine Lemesle, the students behind the
successful project, were able to monitor
the projects progress and explain their
intentions regarding the concept
to all the stakeholders.

Ainsi Carole Garry, en charge du
programme Citizens Rail la Rgion Pays
de la Loire, est venue solliciter Lcole de
design Nantes Atlantique pour limpliquer
dans un processus de projet o le design
est un mdiateur entre une collectivit
et les citoyens. La gare de Penhot
Saint-Nazaire, o 18 tudiants
de 3e anne du cycle bachelor design
despace (encadrs par Lydie Morand
et David Comy) sont intervenus pour
proposer neuf concepts de rhabilitation
de la gare, est devenue un exemple
de design au service des politiques
publiques. Cette collaboration avec RFF,
Gares et Connexions-SNCF et la Rgion
Pays de la Loire a donn lieu au cours
du printemps 2013 une runion
associant toutes les parties prenantes
du projet et a permis de tenir compte
des retours de la consultation publique et
doprer un choix autour dun des concepts

Since September 2014, student designers and engineers have been working
together on the university diploma DESSiiN (DESign of Innovative Interactive
Services: Communicating Objects & Tangible Interfaces), co-organized by Lcole
de design Nantes Atlantique, Tlcom Bretagne and lUniversit de Nantes
(Polytech Nantes and IEMN-IAE). Cross-disciplinary teams are working to develop
new connected objects, prior to the creation of the future university complex which is due
to open in 2017 in the Quartier de la Cration (Nantes). Skills in design, IT, electronics
and telecommunications are combined in design projects for connected objects/services.
With a project-based pedagogical approach designed to promote entrepreneurship,
teaching is built around three dimensions: use (taking into account societal and
anthropological matters), design and management, based on cooperation between
designers and engineers and the technology to exploit the opportunities offered in the
field of human-machine interactions. Open to students from the three co-founding
establishments, the course uses the cross-fertilization of skills to anticipate tomorrows
innovative services and build on the potential of connected objects.
Depuis septembre 2014, tudiants designers et lves ingnieurs collaborent
dans le cadre du Diplme Universitaire DESSiiN (DESign de Services Interactifs
Innovants Objets communicants & Interfaces tangibles) co-organis par Lcole
de design Nantes Atlantique, Tlcom Bretagne et lUniversit de Nantes
(Polytech Nantes et IEMN-IAE). Des quipes pluridisciplinaires travaillent lmergence
de nouveaux objets connects, en amont de la cration du futur ple universitaire ddi
prvu pour 2017 au sein du Quartier de la cration (Nantes). Des comptences en design,
informatique, lectronique et tlcoms sont ainsi combines dans des projets de conception
dobjets/services connects . Inscrit dans une dimension pdagogique par projet vocation
entrepreneuriale, lenseignement sopre autour de trois dimensions : lusage, avec une rflexion
socitale et anthropologique ; la conception & le management, autour de la coopration
entre designers et ingnieurs et la technologie pour apprhender les possibilits offertes
dans le domaine des interactions homme-machine. Une formation aux croisements fertiles,

The success of our students at


food design events demonstrates
the innovation and open-mindedness
of the schools pedagogy.
At Ecotrophelia, the student awards
for food innovation which took place in
July 2014, two projects co-designed by
students from the school and from Oniris
(School of Veterinary Medicine, Food
Science and Engineering) won four of the
eight prizes awarded. Previously in 2013,
seven teams of students from the New
Eating Habits Design Lab took part in the
European competition Grandmas Design.
Faced with the challenge of combining
heritage, cultural identities, food and
innovation in their creation, two teams
were honored. In 2014, the International
Class joined forces with the Centre
Culinaire Contemporain (Contemporary
Culinary Center) in Rennes as part
of the Moke up project which consists
in developing a design project in vivo.
The school also participates in trade
fairs for food professionals. Nine student
projects based on themes specific
to Nantes and incorporating identity,
food production and presentation were
presented to the public at Serbotel
(Nantes, 2013) to showcase how design
can respond to the problems faced
by restaurateurs.

UN THME, UNE AFFICHE
International poster artist Alain Le Quernec is well-known for being a committed
graphic designer. His posters make an impression on the spectator, stir our
consciences and remain inscribed in our memories. On each occasion,
Le Quernec chooses a powerful theme that is the pretext for designing posters which convey
a meaningful message and above all constitute visual responses. In 2013, the theme explored
was the right to housing, in 2014 it was war and in 2015, terrorism. Each year, the students
proposals are responsible, thought-provoking, humorous, positive or nihilistic but they all
illustrate content which is appropriate to the substance and form of the message being conveyed.

The Nantes-based association


PiNG explores digital practices,
re-appropriates technology and
brings together an eclectic public
whilst defending the values of free
culture. In 2013, the first workshop was

organized in partnership with Meccano


who provided each team of students with
a box set from their range as a starting
point for their creations; the interactive
part was based on Arduino technology,
a programmable Open Source electronic
card. FoxDesign agency ensured the
consistency of the products. In 2014,
PiNG repeated the experience with
students from interaction design
on the theme of environmental capture.
The projects were showcased at Festival
D (D for DIY) on 31 May and 1 June 2014
at le lieu unique in Nantes.

an entire week was devoted
to computer assisted drawing for
second year product design students.
Claire dAchon (2010 alumni), transport
designer at Iveco and Augustin Boisleux,
transport designer at Alstom, trained
the students for one week in the skills
of sketching and rough drafts. The theme
of vehicles used to explore the techniques
enabled them to put theory into practice.

In January 2014, students from
the International Class took part in
a workshop run by the designer Jules
Charbonnet, in partnership with the
Nantes-based concert venue Trempolino.
The result: a stage set for the concert
of a Madagascan group called KBossi
inspired by motifs and techniques
borrowed from the musicians traditional
culture; a combination of functional
and portable set elements to create
video projections.

As part of the Festival Assis! Debout!


Couch! (Seated! Standing! Lying
down!), organized by the lieu unique
in February 2014, the designer Matali
Crasset was invited to design the
scenographic installations for 3 evenings
of concerts together with students from
the Sustainable Cities MDes program.
They played a part in creating the scenographic
concept La Vie En Particules: a system
combining furniture and decoration designed
to occupy the space, create a story
and bring additional light.

For the last few years, the American
theatre company Word for Word,
based in San Francisco, has entrusted
the scenography of its new plays
to apprentices of the advanced
vocational diploma in Spatial Design.
Spencer Evans, the companys set
designer, came to help the students with
their research. In 2013, the final set design
for the play You know when the men are
gone was inspired by these sessions.

projects and research activities is essential
for demonstrating expertise. The publication
of articles in research reviews, contributions to
conferences and the production of general interest
works all fuel the evolution of design activities.

The pioneers of industrial design
in the last century were already
defining their scope as ranging from
the teaspoon to the city. In those
days the credo was one of utilitarian
beauty: art for everyone and as
part of everyday life. Art applied to
industry was supposed to humanize
all things technical and the alliance
of the three was to determine
the different forms of modernity
for a better world.
Industrial design, which was born
of applied arts [], spread to all
industrialized countries in the 1950s,
embracing disciplines borrowed from the
humanities and marketing. In professional
spheres, the term design was long
associated with industrial design and
the idea that the latter encapsulated all
the different design fields. As an activity
that involves conception, projection
and projects, it relates to other professions
which also developed their methods
and theories in the context of industrial
development. The word design preceded
by a qualifier ( design) thus replaces,
or co-exists with the former names for
the professions (illustrator or typographer,
decorator, interior designer, etc.) In the last
thirty years we have seen the emergence
of new domains, such as interaction design,
design for all or service design. []
Some of these new domains were
born with the development of IT and its
extension to objects and spaces
in the physical world. All the problematics
offering new modes of interaction
which are as close as possible to users
experience are at stake. Simultaneously,
a movement of user-centered design has
emerged which, although not new in itself,
takes a special place due to its use
of iterative processes of analysis, design
and assessment. []
While service design may be linked
to digital technology, its scope is not
confined only to digital. Service design
which supports social innovation, such
as that defended by Italian designer Ezio

Manzini also takes its roots in a trend


that questioned the economic model
of the 30-year boom period following
the Second World War and gave birth to
the concept of sustainable development
in the eighties. Users and multi-disciplinary
teams are united around collective
projects centered on various societal and
environmental issues such as transport,
food, habitat, energy consumption, etc. []

A DISCIPLINE
Today, the terms design thinking and
co-design are generally used to talk about
all the approaches and methodologies
which give rise to a form of collective
creativity which allows designers from
different professions, users and staff from
companies and authorities to collectively
think up innovative projects and services. []
Tim Browns book, the international
influence of IDEO (created in Palo Alto
in 1991) and the teachings of Stanfords
D School have all contributed significantly
to the promotion of this approach defined
as an innovation strategy based on the
triad of desirability-feasibility-viability
and focusing on the individual. []

DESIGN
AND PUBLIC SERVICE
The different forms of design outlined
above highlight a change wherein creative
potential and the ability to unify teams
place this discipline at the heart of the issues
of an innovative service policy in local
authorities. []
In this field, as in any sector in which
design has a role to play, it is important
to consider its involvement in the long
term. It is not just a question of learning
methods and tools which would provide
the magic formulae to the questions
asked, as a simplistic approach to design
thinking might suggest. For each specific
situation we must consider the context
and work towards achieving a field-based
design doing.

Dans les milieux professionnels, le terme
design a longtemps t quivalent
design industriel avec l'ide que
celui-ci finalement recouvrait tous les
champs du design. En tant qu'activit
de conception, de projection, de projet,
il renvoie cependant d'autres mtiers
qui ont galement dvelopp leurs
mthodes et thories dans le contexte du
dveloppement industriel. Le mot avec
un qualificatif, design de, remplace
donc, ou ctoie les anciennes
dnominations de mtier (graphiste,

dcorateur, architecte d'intrieur).


Les trente dernires annes ont vu
merger de nouveaux territoires,
tels que le design d'interactivit, le design
pour tous ou le design de service. []
Certains de ces nouveaux territoires
sont ns avec le dveloppement
de l'informatique et son extension
aux objets et aux espaces dans
le monde physique. Sont en jeu toutes
les problmatiques offrant de nouvelles
modalits d'interaction, au plus prs des
expriences concrtes de l'utilisateur .
Paralllement en effet a merg un
courant user-centered design qui,
s'il n'est pas nouveau en soi, occupe
une place particulire par la mise en
uvre de processus itratifs d'analyse,
de conception et d'valuation. []
Si le design de service peut tre
rattach au numrique, son territoire
n'y est pas limit. Un design de service
porteur d'innovation sociale, tel que le
dfend le designer italien Ezio Manzini
prend ses racines galement dans un

les secteurs o le design a un rle

pourrait le laisser supposer une approche
rductrice du design thinking. Il faut

LA CLASSE INTERNATIONALE
In 2012/2013, 59 French and
foreign students joined the schools
international class. Fifteen different
nationalities worked side by side,
forming a tremendous multicultural
learning environment. In September 2014,
19 European students from the Erasmus
program and 16 students from other
continents made up the international
section. They were divided into three
groups and each of them had to carry
out an industrial project. The Industrial
products group (for students in industrial
design) worked on a project for a new
high-end washing machine in partnership
with Indesit, the Brand Design group
(for students in graphic design, product
design or visual communication) was
in charge of doing the branding for
a range of metal fencing for Vendme
and the Global Design group (for students
in spatial, product or interior design)
looked at the design of bedroom
furnishings for French company Resistub.
In June 2014, the school got the go-ahead
for the European exchange program
Erasmus+ which has now been extended
to include new zones such as Russia,
Africa, Asia and Latin America to facilitate
intercultural exchanges for our students.

in a preparatory class designed
to train them for enrollment on one

After spending four months at

In March 2014, 19 students from
the College of Advertising and Design
(CAD) in Brussels took part in a visit
+ workshop" program laid on by
the China Studio. The workshop brought
together 60 students of 3 nationalities
and from 8 different specialties. It was
an intense and challenging project which
aimed to observe and analyze a district
of Shanghai and subsequently imagine
it in 20 years time. With the help of
4 professionals of 4 different nationalities
and sectors, the students came up with
creative ideas for interaction within the local
population. In January 2014, the China
Studio also organized the first SHS
Caf (Humanities and Social Sciences)

with the Alliance Franaise in Shanghai.


It consisted of a cycle of conferences
organized in partnership with the SinoEuropean School of Technology of
Shanghai University (UTSEUS) that took
place once a month throughout 2014.

For 2nd year BTS students, going
abroad for a study trip is an important
educational part of their training.
The school therefore joined the
Carrousel project whose aim is
to create ties between different
European design schools.
In 2013, our apprentices in product
design went to Zwolle in the Netherlands
for a week of shared practical exercises
at the Windesheim School of Engineering
and Design. Amongst other things,
the Franco-Dutch teams spent three days
working on a project to design mens
skincare products. The young designers
presented their project to three managers

from Philips who admired the quality


of analysis and creativity demonstrated
by the apprentices.

are all potential sources of social
innovation and sustainable solutions
for our ageing European societies.
So three European schools, Aalto
University (Finland), Politecnico di Milano
(Italy) and Lcole de design Nantes
Atlantique teamed up to get their students
working together with a pragmatic fieldbased approach. An in situ operation
in a district of Helsinki, innovative services
co-designed with the inhabitants of Milan
and a closer look at the everyday lives
of elderly residents in Nantes were all

opportunities to implement this approach


and compare viewpoints. The result
of this work was presented in a series
of thematic exhibits organized successively
in the three cities.
La solidarit, lchange et la transmission

The school encourages students and graduates to become entrepreneurs


by providing the necessary assistance to incubate their projects.
The Internship and Business Relations Cluster helps MDes students with a program
of professionalization with regular conferences and meetings organized during the year.
The students are also encouraged to participate in the Entrepreneuriales, an educational
Learning by Doing competition that teaches students how to set up their own company.
The aim is to develop students entrepreneurial spirit and to encourage them to be
proactive in their professional project. The connections with Atlanpole, the regional
incubator of Pays de la Loire, or the incubator at lcole des Mines in Nantes, also offer
opportunities for start-ups put forward by students or young graduates, who benefit from
help and guidance from the formalization stage right up to the economic, legal and financial
development of their project. Finally, the double diploma with the Institute of Economics
and Business Administration of Nantes-IAE which combines a Masters in design
with a Masters in business administration also offers interesting entrepreneurial opportunities.

What is your activity?


TB & TD: Our company is specialized
in information visualization and training
on information-mapping.
What were the catalysts for setting
up your own activity?
TB & TD: We realized that companies
didnt know what to do with their data.
We therefore started to develop a
solution during an internship, building on
the expertise of Franck Ghitalla (lecturer,
researcher and French specialist in the field
of network sciences) and Lo Bonnargent
(developer). We presented an initial version
of the interface at an event at the Nantes
Events Center. The positive reaction we
met with gave us the confidence to set up
our company.
Did you already have this
entrepreneurial spirit as students?
TB & TD: Both of us took part in the
Entrepreneuriales (Coup de Cur
award for Thomas Busson and 1st Prize
for Thomas Dupeyrat).
What help and guidance were you
given in this creation process?
TB & TD: We were incubated by lcole
des Mines de Nantes with the cooperation
of Lcole de design. This assistance
meant we had premises free of charge.
As for the rest, we decided to do our first
year without any financial help.

Since 2013, the International Class has been fine-tuning its options to
consolidate its managerial dimension. This new organization addresses brand issues
at different scales and levels of complexity, and uses design to ensure the coherence and
readability of branding. The students are involved in the companys design-led innovation
strategy in the early stages of the project and are mobilized on analyzing the positioning
of the brand in a highly competitive market. Students acquire the project management
methods and tools necessary to assert their capacity for innovation and develop their
teamworking skills.
Depuis lanne 2013, la Classe Internationale a fait voluer ses options afin
daffirmer sa dimension managriale. Cette nouvelle organisation permet daborder
diffrentes chelles et niveaux de complexits les problmatiques de marque en mettant
le design au service de sa cohrence et de sa lisibilit. Les tudiants sont impliqus dans
la stratgie dinnovation par le design de lentreprise en amont du projet et mobiliss
sur lanalyse du positionnement de la marque dans un univers concurrentiel. Les tudiants

From 2005 to 2007, Pauline did


her apprenticeship at Waterman
who hired her on a permanent basis
as soon as she got her diploma.
Pauline was involved in designing pens,
packaging, and graphic design, working
closely with product managers, industrial
designers but also in the factory. She had
a fantastic six-year experience combining
practice and theory. With a background
in graphic arts, she continued her career
from 2011 in a Saint-Nazaire design
agency called Unsens Design.
Here, Pauline explored a huge variety
of design fields, from creating logos,
graphic charters, graphic design to
designing a range of signage furniture.
Working in a design agency is exactly
how she imagined it would be as an
apprentice: I've always wanted to work
in an agency in order to become really
versatile; I think its important in this
profession. You could say Ive got the
career I dreamt of but there are still
plenty of years ahead of me for other
professional projects Ive got running
through my head!. For Pauline, the keys
to her success are drawing, following
her dreams, asserting her individuality
and her enthusiasm, being organized,
multi-purpose and above all passionate!

De 2005 2007, Pauline fait son


apprentissage chez Waterman,
qui lemploiera en CDI ds lobtention
de son diplme. Design de stylos,
packaging, graphisme, Pauline travaille
alors en troite collaboration avec les
chefs de produits, les dessinateurs
industriels mais galement lusine.
Une trs belle exprience de six annes
combinant pratique et thorie. Issue des
arts graphiques, elle poursuit sa carrire
partir de 2011 au sein de lagence de
design de Saint-Nazaire Unsens design.
Cration de logos, chartes graphiques,
graphisme ou mobiliers pour la signaltique,
Pauline explore de nombreux domaines
du design. Travailler en agence de design
correspond ce quelle imaginait en tant
quapprentie : Jai toujours eu envie
de travailler dans une agence pour tre
polyvalente ; je pense que c'est important
dans ce mtier. On peut dire que jai suivi
le parcours que je mtais imagin
mais il me reste encore plein dannes
pour dautres projets professionnels qui
me trottent dans la tte ! . Pour Pauline,
dessiner, aller au bout de ses envies,
affirmer son univers et son dynamisme,
tre organise, polyvalente et surtout
passionne, sont les cls de sa russite !

After doing a science/technology


Baccalaureate specialized in fashion,
Lila chose to join the school, attracted
by its multidisciplinary approach.
Her desire to discover a land of opportunity
in a stimulating environment led her to
choose the Transcultural Design Masters
program in Shanghai, where she is now
building her career. During this Masters
degree, the school taught me to conduct
anthropological and sociological studies
which help you adapt to any cultural
environment. Doing projects in partnership
with international companies allowed
me to put this learning into practice
and understand its force.

Arthur is a globe-trotter. After taking


the Transcultural Design course

Francisco as an industrial designer

design agencies in the States, founded
by Yves Bhar. I strongly believe that life
experience and cultural exchanges are
the best source of inspiration. Life experience
makes each designer what they are
and gives them totally unique character
traits. In my view, one of the designers
responsibilities is to remain perpetually
curious about everything.

Becoming an in-house designer
requires a thorough knowledge
of the companys culture and operations.
By opting for a career in in-house design,
the designer is immersed in the product
throughout the entire value chain and must
pull all the levers to improve the quality of the
product, and develop both the material and
intangible value of the brand. The post of
in-house designer is a strategic one which
is still relatively rare in small companies.
It is therefore essential to prove yourself,
measure the benefits and be constantly
creative. In industrial design, food design,
spatial or graphic design, this profession
requires to be both multidisciplinary
on the one hand and specialist on the other!

Nadim Raad and Andrew-Junior


Kimbembe, young graduates from
the school (2013 and 2009), have
moved to Silicon Valley in California.
After gaining some experience in Europe
and the US, the two UX designers joined
the Mountain View giant Google.
The Silicon Valley is inherently international
and full of exceptional talent but our
French guys, thanks to their training,
know how to combine the roles of Visual
Designer and Interaction Designer.
On a visit to the school for a workshop
in December 2014 with Masters students
in Digital Culture, they heightened awareness
about the issue of personal data.

intgr, le designer est plong dans
le produit sur toute sa chane de valeur
et doit actionner tous les leviers pour

immatrielle de la marque. Poste stratgique,
encore peu prsent au sein dentreprises
de petite taille, le designer intgr doit
convaincre par la preuve, qualifier

Lucie Bolzec graduated in 2011
from the New Eating Habits course
and has since been developing her
activity as a freelance food designer.
Her freelance status lets her develop
prospective solutions for a variety of clients,
from industrialists to restaurant owners,
consulting agencies to artisans from the
catering industry. Considering the design
brief, fulfilling user needs, interacting with
the other professions: Lucies versatility
is essential for successfully completing
her food innovation projects which cover
the product and the packaging but also
the brand communication or dining concept.

in service and innovation design with
an emphasis on use and user experience.
We integrate design into daily practice
by implementing processes which are

RB: Its an excellent way to observe their


qualities, increase their potential, work
on techniques and benefit from their
growing expertise over a two-year period.
Apprentices are also more confident than
students; they are much more clued-up
when they enter the job market. In two
years, you get a good idea of the world
of business; you learn how to survive in it.

R.B. : Cest une excellente formule

techniques et bnficier d'une monte

galement plus confiant quun tudiant,

How much of your time is spent


being an apprenticeship manager
or tutor in your activity?
RB: Its hard to quantify seeing as the
students actively contribute to our output.
The difference between my function and
my role as tutor is therefore not always
clear. We discuss with the apprentice how
the apprenticeship is going and how they
are fitting in to the company or project
team. Its an opportunity to put our activity
into perspective, to see it through the
apprentices eyes and share their feelings
about the experience.

Quel temps consacrez-vous en tant


que matre dapprentissage ou tuteur
dans votre activit ?
R.B. : Cest difficilement mesurable,
les tudiants contribuant activement aux
ralisations. La diffrence entre ma fonction
et mon rle de tuteur nest donc pas toujours
explicite. Avec lapprenti, nous changeons
sur le droul de lapprentissage, lintgration
dans lentreprise ou lquipe projet.
Cest loccasion de prendre du recul sur
lactivit, de lenvisager travers le prisme
de lapprenti et de partager le ressenti
sur lexprience.

of La Poste under the responsibility
of R. Bary, the apprenticeship
has been a winning formula to help him
flourish in the workplace and get a real
experience of the profession of designer.
Pedagogy and perseverance have helped
him find his place in the organization and
successfully communicate his ideas.
His main tasks ranged from expertise
to project management right through
to implementation. User workshops,
wireframes, mock-ups, usage scenario,
production of style guidelines, etc.
His apprenticeship allowed him to
assess and apply an iterative approach
to both service design and applications.
A tremendous asset when it comes to
looking for a job after graduation!

Jean-Pierre Mac, co-founder


of TETRAC architects firm, is keen
to pass on some of his professional
skills and experience to the apprentices
from the BTS in Spatial Design that
the firm takes on. For Jean-Pierre Mac,
the encounter between the apprentice
and the firm must make the apprentice
want to go further; it must instill in them
curiosity and a thirst for learning.
Over the years, his vision of the
apprenticeship managers role has
become broader and for the past few
years he has participated in the jury for
BTS and Masters exams. This gives him
a better understanding of what is expected
of the students upon graduation and also
enables him to prepare the apprentice
more effectively for the exam.

The first student class on the Masters


apprenticeship program in Design and
Innovation Management graduated
in 2013. Part of the CFA (Vocational
Training Center dedicated to Creation
and Industrial Innovation), this training
program focuses on the organization
and management of design projects,
development of team-working and
communication skills and finding
relevant responses through creativity
and innovation techniques. Out of
18 apprentices, 17 successfully completed
this demanding course and their personal
project. This is an educational choice
which more than pays off as this program
has to satisfy both companies and the
school. All the students on the course
graduated with honors; the jury members
commented on the confidence and
professionalism of our apprentices in their
oral presentations.

Council of French Interior Designers
(CFAI) for its Masters degree in design
program recognizing students from
the Bachelors program in Spatial
Design/Interior Design. Graduates with
this profile will be able to use the title
interior designer after three years
working as employees or self-employed
workers. This is an acknowledgement of
both the school and its young graduates
who are now able to practice their profession
of interior designer in optimum conditions
at a national, European or international level.

THE WINNING COMPANIES


LES ENTREPRISES LAURATES
The Design Trophies distinguish companies for their experience in terms
of creation encouraging their management to make use of agency or in-house
designers. Micro-enterprises, SMEs and middle-market companies are thus
encouraged to consider design as a development tool. Since 2013, the awards
have been divided into five different categories. In 2013, Aqualeg won the Trophy in
the Design and Start-up category for the development of an attractive femoral prosthesis
(Fox Design agency). In 2014, Beauer, a manufacturer of recreational vehicles, won an
award in the same category (Zamak agency). In 2013, the Design and Innovation Trophy
was awarded to Etalmobil for the concept of a food truck vehicle (M.A.D. Studio agency)
and in 2014 to Krampouz, the worldwide leader in professional crepe makers.
The Design and Interaction Trophy was awarded to the Bocage du Lac campsite in 2013
for the development of its accommodation (Owen Poho Leano agency) and in 2014 it
went to Atelier Iceberg. The Global Design Trophy was awarded to Sogal, manufacturer of
dressing-rooms and sliding doors in 2013 and to Brosserie Julio in 2014. The companies 10-vins
(wine by the glass) and Structures (design and production of objects and structures) won
the Jurys Special Prize in 2013 and 2014 respectively.
Les Trophes de design distinguent lexprience des entreprises en matire
de cration encourageant les chefs d'entreprises ayant fait confiance un
designer (intgr ou en agence). TPE, PME et ETI sont ainsi incites prendre
en considration le design comme outil de dveloppement. Depuis 2013,
les rcompenses sont rparties en cinq catgories diffrentes. En 2013, Aqualeg
a reu le Trophe catgorie Design et start-up pour le dveloppement dune prothse
fmorale esthtique (agence Fox Design). En 2014, Beauer, constructeur de vhicules
de loisirs a t rcompens dans la mme catgorie (agence Zamak). Le Trophe Design
et innovation a rcompens en 2013 Etalmobil pour un concept de vhicule adapt food
truck (agence M.A.D.Studio) et en 2014, le leader mondial de la crpire professionnelle
Krampouz. Le Trophe Design et interactivit a t dcern en 2013 au camping du Bocage
du Lac pour lvolution de son hbergement (Owen Poho agence Leano) et en 2014
Atelier Iceberg. Le Trophe Design global sest vu dcern Sogal, fabricant de
dressings et portes coulissantes en 2013 et la Brosserie Julio (Ionna Vautrin) en 2014.
Lentreprise 10-vins (vin au verre) en 2013 et Structures (conception et ralisation dobjets
et structures produits) en 2014 ont reus quant eux les prix Coups de Cur du jury.

Comment se diffrencier sur le march des fermetures aujourdhui ? Question


pose par lentreprise Vendme Fermetures et Portails qui a choisi linnovation
par le design dans un secteur pourtant trs concurrentiel. Ds 2011, une premire
tude prospective a t mene avec des tudiants de 3e anne Classe internationale ;
lentreprise a de son ct mobilis des membres du bureau dtudes et du marketing
sur le projet. Sept groupes de travail ont propos des solutions innovantes et design.
Enthousiasme par les rsultats, lentreprise a ensuite analys chaque proposition
et retenu lquipe dAdrien Edel et Laura Gasparini, diplms 2013. Pas moins de sept
modles crs par le duo ont t repris et intgrs au catalogue Charuel de lentreprise.
lheure du bilan, Stphane Grizeaud, chef de produit, explique : Au-del des travaux
raliss par les tudiants, notre collaboration avec Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique
nous a permis de crer une dynamique interne dans la cration de nouveaux modles.
De plus, lil neuf des tudiants nous a emmens sur des pistes que nous naurions pas
explores aussi vite. Le portail tant un produit dimage, nous souhaitons maintenant sortir
une nouvelle collection tous les ans. Nous referons donc certainement appel Lcole
de design pour nous assister dans de futurs dveloppements.

How can we differentiate ourselves in the fencing market today? This was
the question asked by French company Vendme Fencing and Gates who opted
for design-led innovation in a highly competitive sector. In 2011, the first prospective
study was carried out with 3rd year students from the International Class; the company
mobilized members of the design office and marketing team to work on the project.
Seven working groups came up with innovative design solutions. Thrilled with the results,
the company then analyzed each proposal and selected the team made up of Adrien Edel
and Laura Gasparini who graduated in 2013. No less than seven models created by the
duo were taken on board and included in the companys Charuel catalogue. Looking back
at their achievements, Stphane Grizeaud (product manager), explains: In addition to the
work produced by the students, our collaboration with L'cole de design Nantes Atlantique
helped us find an internal dynamic for creating new models. Whats more, the students
fresh perspective took us down avenues we wouldnt have explored so quickly.
Since gates are an image-based product, from now on we intend to bring out a new
collection every year. We will certainly be contacting L'cole de design again to ask for their
help in future developments.
