2 Project Termination Management

Termination of the project is a condition that must be faced by the project
management team and it is the most serious decision needs to be determined.
Termination is referring to actions and conditions will be deleted. Termination of
the project known as the day on which the project was dead. There is one fact
which project management professionals are not aware that the procedure
termination of the project is very important for the success and also fail or
abandoned. A project will officially end. Termination of the project does not mean
the project has failed or omission premature but it may be terminated for various
reasons, including the success of the project was implemented and completed in
the specified time.
Termination rarely have an impact on technical success or failure, but it's
because everything that exists will end. However, the greatest impact is the
attitude of the project manager, the project team and the client also is the
success of a project. Basically, this project will expire after successfully
completing or organization is no longer willing to invest the time and cost
needed to complete a project that will be given the status of current and
expected outcome. Therefore, it is desirable to design and implement the
termination properly. According to Dean (1968), there were several reasons why
the project has to terminate which is:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Low probability of technical/commercial success

Low profitability/ROI/market potential
Damaging cost growth
Change in competitive factor/market needs
Unresolvable technical problems
Higher priority of competing projects
Schedule delays

Generally, there are several types of project termination which is schedule

termination, early termination (premature termination) and partial termination
for project on hold. There are four fundamentally different ways to close out a
project which are extinction, addition, integration, and starvation.
Termination by Extinction

The project may end because it has been successful and achieved its
goals
The project may also be stopped because it is unsuccessful or has been
superseded
Two important characteristics of termination by murder are the
suddenness of project demise and the lack of obvious signals that death is
imminent
When a decision is made to terminate a project by extinction, the most
noticeable event is that all activity on the substance of the project ceases

Termination by Addition

If a project is a major success, it may be terminated by institutionalizing it

as a formal part of the parent organization

Project personnel, property, and equipment are often simply transferred

from the dying project to the newly born division
The transition from project to division demands a superior level of political
sensitivity for successful accomplishment

Termination by Integration

This method of terminating projects is the most common way of dealing

with successful projects, and the most complex
The property, equipment, material, personnel, and functions of the project
are distributed among the existing elements of the parent organization

Termination by Starvation

i.

This type of project termination is a slow starvation by budget

decrement
There are many reasons why senior management does not wish to
terminate an unsuccessful or obsolete project:
Politically dangerous to admit that one has championed a failure
Terminating a project that has not accomplished its goals is an
admission of failure

Project Termination Activities

Period for termination of the project is dependent on the scale of a project,
if the project is needed is a small short period while if the project big time
required is long. This variable are consider before the entire project team
is released and project manager is assigned a new duties. This termination
activity is to ensure the project that has accomplished has proper closer.
The organization should determine which of the following types of
activities need to be performed for project termination.
Designation Of Project Closeout Responsibility
This exercise focuses on the responsibilities of the project team
members to recognize the actions of project closeout. Closing this
project requires only one to operate with minimum assistance for
smaller projects and shorter intervals. For the other projects it is
necessary to establish a team of individuals. Of the contribution of
this work, a closeout workload can work past the various activities
that will be shared.
Preparation Of Lessons Learned
Preparation of the lessons learned is to involve the preparation of
information. These exercise is available for all major project
participants. These involvement will be used to adjust and
customize the actions that are experiencing the same situation in
future projects. Preparation of teaching will move to the
achievement of project management. The goal of storage lessons
learned should make accessible and available for review next
project management efforts.
