Overview
Introduction
These units for modern data centers are optimized for underfloor fan module installation in order to minimize
power consumption. Units are created in two sections to allow installation of a fan module under or above the
raised floor and to increase the coil surface for energy efficiency maximization.
These units provide reduced electrical absorption, a greater ability of maintaining elevated efficiency levels
even at partial loads, rationalized regulation, and communication with a wide range of supervision protocols.
Some HDCV models (1400, 1800, and 2900) are optimized for high air and water operating temperatures
according to the latest ASHRAE guidelines. Other models (0800, 1300, 1700, and 2500) are for traditional air
and water operating temperature conditions.
According to the latest ASHRAE trends, airflow requires a room layout featuring hot and cold aisles. In the
suction section (return) of the rack (cold aisle), the air temperature must be maintained at a constant level
between 18C and 27C for the whole height of the rack depending on the manufacturer, while the hot aisles
situated at the discharge (supply) section of the rack have a temperature of between 30C and 38C depending
on the active thermal load. Humidity needs to be maintained inside an envelope identified by a max rH of 60%,
and dew point temperature between 55C and 15C.
Particular attention has been paid to reducing fan energy consumption by optimizing the aeraulic circuit and by
using fans with electronically commutated motors. These solutions are integrated with a sophisticated air-flow
management system and underfloor pressure control.

Electrical panel
Electric panel conforming to EC standards (2006 /95 /EC and EMC 2004/
108/EC directives), auxiliary transformer.
The units come standard with highly efficient and reliable EC (Electronically
Commutated) fans. EC fans can be set to provide a constant airflow, valve
position based air-flow, or pressure based airflow (with an optional
automatic floor pressurization system). EC fans are also fitted with fast
connectors for easy removal in case of fan failure.
They are quiet, low maintenance, and produce very low vibration.
Fan module
EC fan module equipped with circular plug-in connectors for quick and
failure free installation; the module is supplied with safety protection grilles
on the sides for underfloor installation
Fan module 550mm high grilles on the frontal, back and sides, fully open

Main Components
Unit Frame
The framework, electrical panel frame, and internal parts of
the unit frame are constructed from hot zinc plated sheet
steel connected by rivets to ensure durability and stability.
The units are also equipped with internal panels
constructed from black iron coated with epoxy-polyester
paint to isolate compartments affected by the air flow. The
external panels are coated with RAL9003 epoxy-polyester
paint, which ensures long-term durability of the original
features. The front panels are attached to the framework
with rapid coupling fasteners.
The standard panels are lined internally with heat and
soundproofing insulation made of melamine covered by a
protective film 15-mm deep with a density of 10 kg/m3.
Melamine features a high fire-resistance (class B1
according to DIN 4102, BS 476 part 7, VO according to
UL94, ASTM E84, class M1 according to NFP92-501) and
has excellent sound-insulation properties.
These components provide the following benefits:
reduction in the noise transmitted through the paneling
air tightness even without external panels so units can operate with the doors open during servicing
the possibility of inspecting the internal elements without interfering with operation of the unit and while
the unit is operating
As an option, sandwich panels in accordance with A1-DIN classifications are available. The panels are
double-skinned with the external panels coated with RAL9003 epoxy-polyester paint. The internal insulation is
15-mm deep, and internal panels are hot zinc plated.

Fans
The units are equipped with single-inlet centrifugal fans with RadiCal EC
(electronically commutated) backward-curved fan blades made from a
composite material. The EC fans have the following features:
three-phase motor with external rotor and IP54 protection grade
speed regulation by the controller
statically and dynamically balanced impeller with lifelong lubrication
mounted on a low-vibration fan support
airflow-adaptable fan speed

PERMANENT MAGNET:
NORTH POLE
The EC motor is synchronized with electronically-commutated permanent magnets that generate the magnetic
field. The commutation is electronically made by a power transistor, which uses no mechanical elements to
cause wear and tear that can potentially reduce the lifespan of the motor. This provides the following benefits:
low electrical absorption
low noise level
increased efficiency
reduced maintenance
higher reliability
increased yield from heat dispersed into the air and absorbed power
Units equipped with EC fans can also be equipped with an AFPS (Automatic Floor Pressurization System) (see
Automatic Floor Pressurization System (AFPS) on page 58).

Cooling Coil
The cooling coil has a large front surface and
is made from copper tubes mechanically
expanded on aluminum fins with hydrophilic
treatment. The coil is positioned upstream
from the fans and has a stainless steel
condensate drain tray with a flexible drainage
tube and an integrated siphon. This coil
provides the following benefits:
REAR VIEW
an elevated SHR
a low air crossing speed, which
eliminates condensation, reduces
pressure drops, and a more efficient
heat exchange during cooling and
dehumidification
reduced surface tension between the
water and metal surface that promotes
film condensation and preventing
condensation from forming outside of
the condensate tray

Hydraulic Circuit
The hydraulic circuit is made from copper in order to avoid zinc contamination of the water and is coated
entirely with closed-cell insulating material to class 1 according to DM 26.06.84, class 1 according to BS476
part 7, ASTM E 162-87, and reduced fume opacity measured according to ASTM 662- t9. The chilled water
valve body is made from G25 cast iron. The plug is brass with a contoured profile on the vertical section and
V-port on the 90 angle. The stem packing consists of a Viton O-ring with graphite Teflon scraper rings.
Units can be fitted with a two-way or three-way valve with a remote controlled actuator. The maximum pressure
is 16 bar (PN6). Units with higher maximum pressures are available on request. The maximum differential
pressure while closed is 2 bar for the two-way valve and 2.5 bar for a three-way valve. Higher closing pressure
actuators are available on request.
Humidifier
The humidifier consists of a steam cylinder, a steam distributor (installed immediately downstream from the
exchanger), water intake and delivery valves, and a maximum level. An immersed-electrode humidifier
modulates sterile steam production and automatically regulates the salt concentration in the boiler to allow for
the usage of untreated water with no chemical treatment or de-mineralization. The humidifier is installed outside
of the airflow to avoid loss of heat. The unit microprocessor control indicates when the humidifier needs to be
changed because it is empty. The maximum range of the steam capacity production is manually adjustable.
This humidifier provides the following benefits:
Higher system efficiency
Energy saving
Greater component durability
NOTE: A steam cylinder that is able to be inspected and have electrodes cleaned of lime scale is available on
request.
The following tables provide configuration options based on water conductivity:
NOTE: No relation can be determined between water hardness and conductivity.
NOTICE
CORROSION OR EQUIPMENT FAILURE
Do not treat with softeners. This can cause corrosion or the electrodes or the formation
of foam, leading to potential operation problems or failure.
Avoid using well water, industrial water, or water drawn from cooling circuits. In general,
avoid using potentially contaminated water with chemicals or bacteria.

Microprocessor overview
The UG50 control system consists of two sections:
A control board that consists of one I/O board containing the regulation software and is inside the unit
A user terminal that consists of a user interface and can be installed locally or remotely.
The control system uses specifically designed algorithms in order to control the outlet water temperature within
a minimal range and to monitor and protect the various unit components. The user interface displays
information on the unit status and any current alarms. The user terminal is equipped with a 64x120 pixel back-lit
LCD display and six back-lit keys to move between and change parameters. The user terminal can be placed
onboard the unit or, on request, remotely. Using the user terminal, it is possible to set the operating parameters,
monitor the trend of the main working parameters, and view alarm messages.
The local area network (LAN) connection is possible without any additional hardware and enables up to 10
units to be controlled in the same room. The LAN number of the unit is viewed in the microprocessor board. The
clock card option is already integrated in the hardware permitting a proper timing of all the events. Compatibility
with Modbus RTU protocol is an integrated feature on all of the units due to an RS485 serial card already
integrated in the microprocessor board. A second slot for an additional BMS card is available (card to be
selected as an option according to the protocol required).
The control system enables the following functions:
Temperature and humidity control based on a setpoint configured on the user interface
Complete alarm detection system
Alarm event history storage
Alarm signal contacts configured on the user interface
Automatic restart when power returns after a power loss
Remote switching on/off of the unit
Password on two programming levels (settings and service)
Possibility of communicating with two supervision systems by means of an additional serial card
(optional)
Clock card (integrated)
Operating hour counter and the number of inrush currents of the main components
Graphic display with icons displaying the state of the unit components and displaying values read by
probes connected to the control board
Management of the local network with the possibility of setting the rotation of one or two units in stand-by
Operation of these units in setback mode, and regulation based on the average temperature
Override function that allows the main components to be manually controlled without excluding the
possibility of remote control
Possibility of deactivating some of the digital inputs (e.g., humidifier/heaters) - for emergency situations/
auxiliary generators
Alarm sequence history with up to 100 alarm events (with date and time if there is a clock card)
Flexible management of the digital alarm outputs providing the possibility of independently addressing all
available outputs (usually two) and to determine if the contact state must usually be open or closed
Flexible management of the alarms that cause, when there is LAN connection, the intervention of the
stand-by units
The possibility of selecting forced timed flushing of the humidifier if the water quality is not high
The microprocessor is equipped with USB Host and Device ports for programming using a standard
USB drive or direct connection to a PC without requiring serial converters

Options
Single Power Supply With Ultracapacitor
The single power supply is equipped with the optional Ultracapacitor module that provides a temporary power
supply to the control in the event of a power failure. See Ultracapacitor on page 55.
na5583a
Ultracapacitor
The Ultracapacitor module is an optional electronic device that provides a temporary power supply to the
control in the event of a power failure. This minimizes the time required to restart units since the microprocessor
does not have to restart. The Ultracapacitor is integrated in units with dedicated management software and
implemented by buffer Ultracap capacitors. Lead acid batteries are not used, so no special safety or pollution
provisions are necessary.
In the event of a power failure, the capacitors release the stored energy. A minimum of two minutes of power
supply to the control is supplied when the capacitor is fully charged. When power is reset, the capacitors start
re-charging (recharging is managed autonomously by the capacitor). Four minutes of continuous charge is
required for the capacitor to have enough energy to sustain the control during a power outage.
The module avoids microprocessor switch off in case of Voltage dips, short interruption, and voltage variations
according to test performed in conformity with CEI EN 61000-4-11:2006-02, EN 61000-4-11:2004-08, IEC
61000- 4-11:2004-03 part 4-11.
The charge status and operating mode (Normal or Emergency) are displayed on the unit display.

The automatic floor pressurization system (AFPS) developed and tested by Schneider Electric ensures
automatic adjustment of the air flow based on the servers installed, which enables flexible installation. The
AFPS ensures automatic adjustment of the air flow issued by the perimeter units with EC fans during any
maintenance cycle to maintain a constant under-floor pressure by maintaining precise control of the air
distribution/cooling in all of the room, which eliminates hot spots. During ordinary maintenance, access raised
floor panels are often replaced and can reduce the static pressure underneath the floor. As a consequence, the
air flow issued by the grills is reduced and the risk of hot spots developing is increased. The control module
allows a nominal pressure to be maintained underneath the access raised floor (from 20 to 80 Pa) and
manages the fan speed, ensuring that the adjustable nominal pressure value is maintained during all of the
operation phases of the unit during the life span of the room.
58
990-5160A-001
06ME0080@00B0110
To handle any eventual changes that are too rapid and to stabilize the system, the AFPS manages the
variations in pressure underneath the floor by means of an integrated system of automatic pressure regulation.
The AFPS also manages the constant pressure underneath the floor during any maintenance of the floor and
when new servers are installed or if partition walls underneath the floor break or are damaged, adapting the
flow when new equipment is added or when floor panels are opened during maintenance/installation of new
equipment (without creating hot spots in another point of the same room). The AFPS is able to manage
information read by the different units and define combined regulation strategies through a local area network
(LAN) connection.
The system may have a single point of reference in the room or may be managed according to various areas.
When managed according to various areas, all of the units can be controlled based on the average pressure
reading from all of the units. In the event that a reading differs greatly from the average value, units in the area
manage the air flow independently to return the area to a nominal value. The system manages the growth of the
room over time by automatically changing the cooling capacity and the air flow depending on the number of
units, grills, and air distribution systems added.

Energy Meter
An energy meter is an option in the electrical panel that monitors energy
consumption of the unit, voltages between phases, current of each phase,
cosphi, power on each phase, and energy consumption in kWh and kVAR/h.
na5586a
It also provides a graphic view of the CO2 emissions calculation based on the
energy consumption of the unit (gCO2/kWh). The calculation varies from
country to country depending on the mix of renewable and traditional energy
sources. The installation country can be selected from a list or entered manually if it is not available. The value
of the coefficient is then able to be automatically configured (source: International Energy Agency).

corrected by the valve pressure controller.
The control valve and the differential pressure controller are built in series in a common valve body. Pressure
upstream from the throttle acts through an internal impulse pipe to the inlet side of the diaphragm; pressure
downstream from the throttle acts to the outlet side of the diaphragm with a spring force. The differential
pressure controller relieves the control valve, and at the same time limits flow to the preset value. The valves
are matched with an actuator that grants a force of 1000N.
Flowmeter
Units can be equipped with a flowmeter integrated with the microprocessor. The flowmeter is based on the
principle of vortex shedding behind a bluff body. The flowmeter used utilizes MEMS sensing technology
combined with packaging using corrosion-resistant coating on the MEMS sensor element.

Operating principle
The scope of regulation is to minimize energy consumption under partial load conditions. For this purpose, the
OMI device, according to the internal load detection, sets the unit operation (InRow, CRAC) so that the water
flow regulation valve is sufficiently open, changing the chiller water production temperature according to the
heat load required by internal units. A serial connection provides air conditioning unit with the opening values of
the water valve and the fans operation percentage. The water valve that is open the widest continues to be
monitored; the setpoint offset to be applied to the chiller is based on this valve.
The setpoint of the chiller must allow the InRow units to operate with a mid-open valve (settable). If the water
valve opening is higher than the valve opening value plus delta T (delta T value is embedded in the control
software), the setpoint of the chiller begins to decrease. The more the valve deviates from the offset start point,
the higher the decreasing speed will be. Similarly, when the valve closes below the pre-set value for the valve
minus delta T, the setpoint begins to increase. The more the valve deviates from the offset start point, the
higher the increasing speed will be. If the values remain within the pre-set value plus delta T, the active offset is
maintained.
Setpoint optimization
An increase in the chilled water setpoint allows for better efficiency in summer mode (mechanical cooling) and
a wider application of free-cooling/partial free-cooling modes.
