No. 21 Colette Euksuzian makes a move toward the goal to take a shot. Euksuzian played a big role
in Shawnees offensive attack that applied the pressure all day long. The Renegades shut out Cherry Hill West 6-0 to improve their record to 7-5-1. For more photos, please see page 12.

For Medford sisters Serena and

Ava Estacio-Touhey, singing has
been a passion for as long as they
can remember.
They were born singing! As
soon as they learned how to talk,
they started singing, their mother Annabelle said.
And it will likely be something
they stay involved in well into
their futures.
When I grow up, I dont directly want to be a singer, but I imagine music will be a part of my life
in some way forever, Serena
said.
I also play alto saxophone, so I
think music will always be a part
of my life as well, Ava said.
Its definitely a big component
of their lives.
They are also very into
drama, but singing is like the big
umbrella that goes around that
and ties them into drama, Estacio-Touhey said.
Serena is 15 years old and sings
with the Shawnee High School

Choir while Ava is 12 years old

and is a part of the Medford Memorial Middle School Singers.
They also sing with a cappella
groups on the side, but the group
they cherish being a part of the
most is the ChildrenSong of New
Jersey Chorus.
ChildrenSong of New Jersey
was founded by Polly Murray as a
choral music education and performance program based in Haddonfield.
Established in 2000, the program serves 75 children in four
choirs between the ages of 8 and
18 from Camden, Burlington and
Gloucester counties. The organization provides quality music instruction with the goal of attaining the highest level of artistic excellence in choral music performance.
The chorus attempts to enrich
the lives of children from all religious, racial, cultural and economic backgrounds.

After spending his childhood

in the suburbs of Mt. Laurel, hiking 2,200 miles from Georgia to
Maine over a five-month period
opened a whole new world for

Christopher Quinn, so much so

he felt passionate enough about
his experience that he decided to
write a book entitled Adventures
of a Trail Stooge to share with
the world.
It was a journey that has
changed my life, and I hope to

convey that in my book, Quinn

said.
After being born in Long Island, N.Y., and growing up in Mt.
Laurel, the deepest Quinn had
ever gone into the woods was exploring the thicket of trees behind his neighborhood.
Going into high school, Quinn
always had a passion for literature, but as he grew up, it seemed
too romantic of an idea to be a
feasible career path, as he put it.
He did his best to mask that
love for writing by going to the
University of Delaware to study
business. This proved to not be a
waste of time, as this route ended
up being a successful one when
he landed a job in Hoboken.
I did everything in the right
order and the way I was supposed
to. But it wasnt what I wanted,
Quinn said.
After sitting behind a desk and
sending emails each day, Quinn
felt like he needed more. By the
time his 25th birthday rolled
around, he was having what he
referred to as a quarter-life crisis.
He needed to do something of
major significance, and just like

fought so fervently for so
many years ago. Many would say that
voting is one of the most important inalienable rights that we have as Americans, if not the most important inalienable right.
Colonial Americans fought for independence in the 1700s based on the rallying cry of no taxation without representation, and they wanted the
right to choose their own representation.
Over the following 200 years, three
major pieces of legislation extended

Theres always something going on at the library

By MARGARET LAFFERTY
Medford Library Association
Greetings from the Medford Library Association! We are an organization of volunteers who support the Pinelands Library in
Medford. We hope this is only the first in a
series of correspondence to share the wonderful activities and opportunities our
local library has to offer.
Despite many of our friends vacationing, we experienced a very busy summer
reading program. Our attendance was increased due in large part to our adult and
childrens raffle programs. We would like
to thank the ladies of the Medford
Womens Club for donating the childrens
prizes and to Braddocks, Otts and PJ Whelihans for donating the adult prizes. It really does take a whole community effort to
sustain the library and its programs.
After our September raffles, we are beginning to settle into our fall routine.

There were 243 entries for the childrens

Back to School Backpacks and more than
100 entries for the adult prize of art, books
and a gift certificates to Johnsons Farm.
That is more than 350 books checked out
and read in one month. That is exciting!
October brings more than just Halloween and trick or treat. Our October raffle for children is a boo-tiful tower of
Oreos. Children can fill out an entry slip
for every book they read during the month
of October, and if September is any indication, they are highly motivated. The more
they read, the better their chance to win
this yummy prize. Lets see if we can break
the record from last month.
And dont think we have forgotten our
youngest library goers who are not reading
yet. Miss Danielle, our childrens librarian,
has scheduled many activities for the preschool set. We offer Baby Time and Toddler Time on alternating Mondays at 10:30
a.m. and Story Time with Miss Danielle

or Mr. Rick on Thursdays. All these activities include stories, songs, rhymes or other
activities. Check the website for details:
www.bcls.lib.nj.us/calendar/month/mf.
And there is still more to come! On
Tuesday Oct. 27 at 6:30 p.m., we will be presenting Magic by Leonardo, a fun filled
hour of magic and comedy that will leave
you laughing long after he has disappeared. That special event will be followed
on Thursday by You Only Die Once, a
murder mystery. All these events require
pre-registration at the website. Thats all
for now, but wait till you see what we have
in store for our next story. There is so
much fun to come, we cant wait to share it
with our friends. Until next time...

Trip teaches Quinn a lot

TRIP
Continued from page 2

that, he informed his job he

would be leaving to hike the Appalachian Trail. Within a couple
days, he was off learning how to
pitch a tent.
Quinn decided to keep a blog of
his travels, and this is where he
rediscovered his love for writing.
It allowed me a chance to sit
down and sift through my
thoughts by putting them onto
paper. It allowed me the chance to
construct ideas and themes from
my life that I could share with
family and friends. I began to fall
in love again with story, learning
and the transmission of ideas,
Quinn said.
He also found out a lot about
himself after spending five
months alone on the trail. Quinn
decided his meaning in life was
always to write, read and learn
while sharing his experiences
with other people.
He said society is always moving quickly and constantly, with
people trying to get to the top in
whatever it is they do. Quinn is
grateful for the opportunity the
trip provided to stop doing that
for awhile, to reset and to figure
out what he wanted to move toward.
However, it was not all rainbows and butterflies for Quinn, as
he was immediately faced with
some doubt as to whether he
should continue to walk.
Lets face it the act of walking is not all that difficult in and
of itself. But once you slap on a
25-pound pack and start walking
for eight hours, it gets tedious,
Quinn said.
After weeks of being dirty,
smelly and exhausted, he started
to realize his body would be able
to make it but wasnt too sure his
mind would.
Over time, he learned to embrace the difficulties because he
knew they were just a small aspect of the totality of his existence.
I was happy to struggle because I knew that I was alive, and

I was doing something great even

if I couldnt articulate it entirely,
Quinn said.
As he does with most things in
his life, Quinn decided to steer
away from the norm when it
came to the writing style of his
book.
Instead of cleaning up his journal entries after he got home as
most authors do in the traditional
narrative format, he decided to
leave them the way they were to

portray the gritty, personal perspective of his journey.

The natural tone, the raw
journal entry, is what I wanted to
convey.
I wanted to show who I was on
the trail, at my most downtrodden, my most tired and my most
challenged. My raw journal entries are not going to impress reviewers looking for lyrical prose

Quinn ties journal entries

with narrative for his book
QUINN
Continued from page 9

nor were they ever intended to,

Quinn said.
However, he did want to tie together those raw, present journal
entries with a perspective that

could account for the trail in its

entirety. So he included, at the
end of each entry, a section of
notes added after completion of
the trail.
Quinn described this perspective as the one that attempts to tie
together the entire hike, analyzing specific events from a broader
scope after the fact when he had
the time to think about the effect
of that specific entry on the entirety of the trip.
But ultimately, these two perspectives are one. There is a
theme of paradox that runs
through this book. The idea that
one can be so small in the cosmos,
yet existence is so significant.
That we are a beautiful something with vast potential that has
arisen from a great and pervasive
void, a nothing.
In all, Quinn found this trip to
be successful in the sense that he
found his meaning and his place

in the world.
The Appalachian Trail is absolutely beautiful, no matter
where you are, Quinn said.
I created and solidified friendships with individuals who I will
not forget for many years to come.
And should I, in old age, forget
them, I know that my moments
with them, whether I remember
them or not, have shaped who I
am. The people are the best part
of the trail without them, the
trail would be a much different
place.
Quinn is a teaching aide at Milton H. Allen Elementary School
in Medford, as he plans to someday land a high school English
teaching position. He is also
working on another novel and
writes short fiction whenever he
gets the time.

The girls have fallen in love

family.
I enjoy learning music in the
positive environment with lots of
friends, Serena said.
Serena has grown up with this
group as she has been involved
with ChildrenSong for eight
years. Ava has been in the group
for five years and has learned to
value the remaining time she gets
with the older kids.
Ive looked up to the older kids
and learned to enjoy the time I
spend with them before they
graduate, Ava said.
Whether its playing around
while stuck in an elevator or auditioning for the world famous
Americas Got Talent television
show, the girls always seem to
have a memorable time when
they go on trips with this group.
ChildrenSong gets involved in
local happenings such as weddings, trips to the Voorhees Pediatric Facility and Yardley Commons Retirement Home, and it
also gets involved in further trips
such as the workshop it did last
year with the Western Wind Ensemble from New York when it
visited Smith College in Massachusetts and performed at different venues in the area.
In addition to these trips, it
hosts a spring concert and a winter concert each year.
ChildrenSong of New Jersey is
preparing to sing at the Celebrate Peace for UN70 concert
commemorating the 70th anniversary of the United Nations.
The group will be performing
Planet Earth conducted by
world-renowned composer Johan
de Meij of The Lord of the
Rings Symphony and a few of its
own selections.
The concert will take place at
the Kimmel Center in Philadel-

phia on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 3 p.m.

A venue of this stature would
typically provide some stage
fright for a group this young, but
it has performed at the Kimmel
Center before at the first and second editions of this concert.
It also hosted last years winter
concert at Carnegie Hall, so the
group has learned to embrace the
bright lights.Nonetheless, the
members still appreciate the opportunity at hand.
Im excited for the experience

of it. Just being with my friends

and being able to perform at a
venue where so many other great
artists have been, Serena said.
The group has gotten together

for this show to ensure it is one

SEAN LAJOIE/The Sun

Shawnee shut out Cherry Hill

West last week in varsity field
hockey. The Renegades pushed
their record to 7-5-1 with the
win. Above, No. 44 Isabella
Mancini shoots and scores. To
the left, No. 39 captain Krista
Hoffman winds up a strong shot
on net. At bottom right, No. 18
Noa Potoczak applies some
tough defense to the Lions attack as she is able to regain possession for the Renegades. At
bottom left, Mancini controls the
ball as she looks to get some air
on her pass.
