Creativity is as important as literacy in education.

This is a rather radical statement to make

to make. Explore how this might be the case and then decide if you agree.

Creativity is the ability to produce an imagined idea that is unique and different, be it a
thought, a process, or a product. It is a mental process which has helped the world to advance
and thrive. Today many people have regarded creativity as a skill which one must acquire in
order to achieve success in ones life and thus must be developed since childhood. From my
point of view, to say that creativity is as important as literacy in education may be radical, but
seemed plausible if supported by logical reasons.
Creativity, like literacy, is an essential quality in a person which is used and manifested in
almost every aspect of ones life or profession. While people exalt literacy as the most crucial
skill in life, they often forget that creativity has been a useful tool to solve many of their
everyday problems. Inventions and innovations also happened because of creativity. For
example, the beginnings of the light bulb would be different if Thomas Alfa Edison was not
creative enough. Hence, creativity is as important as literacy in education because, similar to
literacy, it is essential to have in ones life.
Another reason why creativity is as important as literacy in education is because it can and
should be developed since childhood. If it is possible for everyone to attain literacy through
sufficient learning and nurture, then creativity has the same case as literacy. Today it is not
uncommon to hear parents trying to develop their childrens creativity. There are programs
that instruct children to do activities which help to foster creativity. Many schools and
courses have also emphasized on developing creativity. Thus, creativity and literacy can have
the same degree of importance since both can be developed through education.
The interdependence which creativity and literacy hold also contributes to the radical
argument that they carry the same importance in education. It is undeniable to say that one is

able to study history through literacy. One can also gather knowledge and information from
the older generations and keep up with the current situation in the world by being literate.
However, one must acknowledge that creativity plays a vital role in transferring those
information and knowledge since creativity involves the ability to communicate ideas and
values. It also prepares people for the future as it helps people to keep up with changing times
and technology.
To sum up, the idea that creativity is as important as literacy in education can be true since
creativity itself has been an essential part which helps the world to propel forward. The need
for one to be creative is rising, especially today when the world is undergoing rapid changes.
As a result, creativity has become so crucial that it can be compared to literacy, and so must
be developed as one go through education.
