Our Featured Speaker For March Is

Judi Dains
Quilt and Wearable Art Designer

This month Judi Dains will be talking to us about wearables and quilting. She will also treat
us to a trunk show of her work. Judi lives in Citrus Heights and is a nationally recognized
quilt and wearable art artist who has been richly rewarded for her work. She lectures on
the textile arts, primarily at quilt guilds, conferences and quilt related venues. She also
teaches quilt designing and making as well as wearable art. She is also an inspirational
speaker, designing wearable art around bible scriptures. Judi says "you can call me
flamboyant, call me gutsy, call me Artsy, or even too bold, but never call me boring! I love
color! I love to bring excitement into a room! I could be called a walking conversation
piece... and that will be just fine with me.'

Judi will also have books, patterns, and her hand dyed fabric for sale.

Note: For this meeting, we will be having our program first, a break, then followed by the business portion
of the meeting.

Quilty Tips

• When you are making 1/2 square triangles always sew a SCANT 1/4 inch (rather than a regular 1/4 inch) from the
center diagonal line so that the fabric will have a bit more room to flip over when you press it. Most times you can
cut your initial squares a FULL 1 inch larger (rather than the standard 7/8 inch) and then just trim them down to
the finished size + 1/2 inch for the seams allowances. Easier 'math' and better to be too big and trim down, than
to end up being too small.

• Do you have those plentiful free-advertising, flat refrigerator magnets? Put 'em to use; they safely handle rotary
cutter blades... instead of risking a finger, the magnets will safely hold the blades while removing from the
package or loading the cutter, etc... easy and free.

• White Vinegar _ it's not just for coleslaw anymore. It is useful for quilting as well. Unlike me, you probably
pre_wash your fabrics. One cup of vinegar added to the wash water will help set colors. It also helps when
pressing. Keep some vinegar in a spray bottle. If your fabric is wrinkled, give it a sprits, then press _ the wrinkles
will disappear. A sprits on the right side of a seam will also help you press that sucker flat. Yes, it makes your
quilt smell like salad dressing, but the scent will dissipate over time. And, if you're impatient, a blast of perfume
should do the trick.
