The Rule
in Words
When multiplying like bases,
keep the base the same and
add the exponents.
When dividing like bases,
keep the base the same and
subtract the denominator
exponent from the numerator
exponent.
When raising a fraction to a
power, distribute the power to
each factor in the numerator
and denominator of the
fraction.
Negative exponents signify
division. In particular, find the
reciprocal of the base.
When a base is raised to a
negative power, reciprocate
(find the reciprocal of) the
base, keep the exponent with
the original base, and drop the
negative.

What is an exponent
The base a is raised to the power of n is equal to the multiplication of a, n times:
n
a = a a ... a
n times
a is the base and n is the exponent.
Examples
31 = 3
32 = 3 3 = 9
33 = 3 3 3 = 27
34 = 3 3 3 3 = 81
35 = 3 3 3 3 3 = 243
