TOGAF Poster Series #46

Adapting the ADM
by Roger Evernden

The ADM is a very generic process that must be adapted to meet your specific needs.
TOGAF provides some guidelines on how to do this, which we summarize in this poster.

Adapting the ADM to cover all levels in the

Architecture Landscape:

PRELIMINARY

TOGAF describes three levels, but you might also need to

tailor these levels to your needs. For example, you might
add a Geography Level if your enterprise has different
needs in different areas.

STRATEGIC For direction setting at an executive level. So here

you might have an annual iteration of the ADM to map to an annual
investment cycle; there might be more focus on the early phases of
the ADM to provide guidance for the more detailed lower levels.

Strategic

SEGMENT For effective roadmaps at a program or portfolio level.

At this level the ADM is likely to need a bit more detail than at the Strategic level, but not require as many of the steps as the Capability level.

Segment

CAPABILITY For effective roadmaps at a program or portfolio level.

At this level the ADM is likely to need a bit more detail than at the Strategic level, but not require as many of the steps as the Capability level.

Adapting the ADM to cover the exact needs of a

specific Request for Architecture Work:

Adapting the ADM to cover additional tasks, or to

cover an architectural style:

Every architecture project is different so different parts

of the ADM apply. You might need to carry out Phases or
Steps in a different order. Or focus on Baseline or Target
or both. Or you might need to pass quickly through some
phases, go back and iterate phases or steps, etc.

TOGAF has a separate Chapter (21) covering Security

Architecture, and another Chapter (22) covering Service
Oriented Architecture (SOA). But there may be other
tasks that you need to add because of a particular focus,
for example on Business Rules, or Cloud Architectures.
Any topic or approach not covered by TOGAF may require
additions to the ADM.
