PRODUCTION OF HAIR SHINE OUT OF GUMAMELA EXTRACT

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Many countries are industrialized as the times goes by. They are producing many
products that make our lifestyle easier. Some of these products are cosmetic products. Cosmetic
products are used to enhance an appearance of a person. This study aimed to produce hair shine
out of gumamela extract, so that it can be available to use.
Philippine Herbal Medicine Organization stated that gumamela is a shrub that grows
from one to four meters high. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant in the Philippines.
Gumamela varies in many colors: red, yellow, orange, yellow, pink, purple, and other
combinations. Gumamela is the national flower of Haiti and is used as herbal medicine in these
days.
According to the WiseGeek, sebum is an oily substance secreted by the sebaceous glands
in skin. It makes the skin and hair waterproof and to protect them from drying out. An excess of
sebum, can make the skin or hair oily, and it can begin to smell when broken down by bacteria
outside the body. Using harsh shampoo or dry weather can make the hair looks dull and dry.
In this study, the researcher used gumamela flower and leaves as an alternative hair shine.
The researcher will focus on the qualitative result of gumamela hair shine and its possibility as
natural hair shine.

Statement of the Problem

Specifically, it will try to answer the following question:
1.

Can Gumamela extract be a hair shine?

2.

What are the characteristics of the product

a.

Odor

b.

Texture

c.

Appearance

3.

Is this product is as effective as other hair shine?

4.

Can this product be an alternative hair shine?

5.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using gumamela extract as hair
shine?

Objectives
This study aims to: (1) describe the characteristics of the product according to odor,
texture and appearance; (2) determine the probability of gumamela extract to be a hair shine; (3)
compare the effectiveness of this product with the other hair shine; (4) determine if this product
can be an alternative hair shine; (5) determine the advantages and disadvantages of the product.

Significance of the Study

This study determines if gumamela extract make the hair shiny and beautiful. Since most
of people wants to make their hair shine, this product is cheaper than the other hair shines. Since
the gumamela is environment-friendly because there is no harmful chemicals added to the
environment.

Scope and Limitation

This study is limited only in determining if gumamela flower and leaves extract
can be a hair shine. Moreover, this study pertains to both gumamela leaves and flower which I
chose to investigate. The study was conducted in Asis, Mendez, Cavite.
The study mainly focused in the production of hair shine from gumamela extract.
From June 2015 until March 2016.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Gumamela
Gumamela is a shrub that grows from one meter up to 4 meters high. Hibiscus, China
Rose and Shoeflower are the other terms for gumamela. This plant is cultivated as an ornamental
plant in the Philippines. Hibiscus has different colors: red, yellow, orange, white, purple, pink
and other color mixtures, (Philippine Herbal Medicine).
Hibiscuses are huge shrubs or small trees that can produce large, colorful, trumpet-shaped
flowers over a long season. Chinese hibiscus and tropical hibiscus are some of the common
names of Hibiscus. Gumamela are deciduous shrubs with dark green leaves; the plants can grow
to 15 feet tall. Its flowers may be up to 6 inches diameter, with colors ranging from yellow to
peach to red. It can be planted singly or grown as a hedge plant. Its flowers are attractive to
butterflies and hummingbirds, (Garden Organization) ( 2015 National Gardening Association).
This flower is an erect, much-branched, hairless shrub, 1 to 4 meters high. It leaves are
silky green, ovate, edged, pointed, coarsely-toothed margins, 7 to 12 centimeters long. Flowers
are solitary, axillary, gigantic, about 10 centimeters long, and 12 centimeters in diameter. The
calyx is green and about 2 centimeters long, with ovate lobes. Its petals are red, orange or rosewhite, rounded tip, and covered. Stamens form a long tube covering the entire style of the pistil
and extended of the corolla. By breeding, many new hybrids with beautiful and colorful
gumamela flowers are now convenient in the market as well in surroundings, (Bautista, 2015).

Gumamela flower is very common in the Philippines. There are many hybrids of flower

Hair Wax
Hair wax is a hair styling product that is used to define hair into textured pieces or chunks
and manipulate hair into multiple hairstyles. Hair wax, which is very thick and contains some
wax, has many names depending on the distributor. Some products go by the names of whip,
glue or paste, while others are called putty or pomade. Regardless of the name of the product,
they are all texturizers that contain wax and can be considered wax-based hair styling products.
Wax based products are different from water based products like gel and mousse because they
dont dry. They can create the same styles and give the same shine as a gel or mousse, but the
hair will remain pliable, unlike gels or mousses which cause the hair to be stiff.
The flexibility of wax-based hair styling products allows users to fix and restyle their hair
throughout the day by just running their fingers through their hair. Because these products dont
have water in them, they dont wash out easily. Regular users should be reminded to use a good
quality clarifying shampoo to get their hair completely clean.

It is best to work with hair wax products on clean hair. Hair wax products may be applied
on wet or dry hair; however, they work better on dry hair. It is important to not add too much
product to the hair at once, because the wax will not come out of the hair without washing it. To
define waves and maximize peaks in hair, it is better to add a little at a time until the desired look
is reached. The application of the product will differ based on its thickness and packaging. Some
hair wax products can be sprayed on, but most are applied with fingertips. When applying hair
wax, hair should be separated into sections with no more than a thumb-size dollop of wax rubbed
into each piece of the hair, (WiseGeek, Copyright 2003 2015)

Hair Gel
Hair gel is a hairstyling product that is applied to wet hair to aid in the styling process. It
comes in several forms, including gel consistency, liquid consistency, or spray form. This hair
product is sold at both professional salons and at discount drug stores. Though hair gel is used to
aid in the styling process of many different hairstyles, it is most useful at providing a wet look.
Gel is also useful for crunching, a styling term that refers to bunching up strands of hair to
boost any natural or chemical curl or wave in the hair. Even though it creates a superb wet look
and works well with air dry styles, it can also be used when blow drying and heat styling. The
method of applying hair gel depends on the type in use. If you are using spray gel, simply spray
all over the hair from roots to end and then work into the hair using your hands. For regular or
liquid gel, apply a quarter-sized dollop to one palm, rub together with the other, and work into
the hair.

Similar to other styling products applied to wet hair, hair gel can be reactivated by lightly
spraying the hair with water once dry. To revamp a style in a hurry, simply mist your hair with a
spray bottle full of water and reshape. If additional hold is desired, you can easily reapply a small
amount of gel before combing or shaping. If you have dry hair, you should avoid using hair gel
that contains alcohol. Like other styling products, it can build up on the hair follicles over time
with frequent use. To remove this build-up, simply use a clarifying shampoo once every few
weeks. Follow up with a conditioner after washing the hair with a clarifying shampoo and then
style as usual. Experiment with different types of gel and different hold strength to find the
product that best suits your styling needs, (http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-hair-gel.htm).

Hair Mousse
Hair mousse is a hairstyling product added to hair for shine. Hair mousse originated in
France and was brought to the North American retail market by LOreal in the 1980s, the first
mousse product coming out under the label Valence". It is often dispensed in an aerosol foam
spray or in cream form. It adds volume to hair and often provides both conditioning and hold,
without any clumps or build-up. Hair mousse is purple while in the can and turns an off-white
color upon coming in contact with the air. This product can be used on naturally curly or permed
hair to reduce frizz and define curl, (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hair_mousse, 13 August 2015,
