Copyright: T. Shoto Tanemura 28th August 2010TOGAKURE RYU NINPO HISTORY
According to legend, Ninpo/ Ninjutsu was founded by Ikai (koh), who
was a Shogun in the old Korean Koma Era. In the first year of the
Chinese Kohyu era (1049) he battled together with the Mongol
Kittan-Ka army against the Chinese Soh King Army, but he was
defeated and escaped to Ise in Japan, where he lived a cave in the Iga
Mountains. Tkai Shogun was an authority on Hicho-jutsu and
On; no-jutsu, and it was a recorded fact that by using a special Kiai,
he could jump to a height of 6 meters.
It is my honest opinion that Ninjutsu is deeply tied to the Amatsu
Tatara line. This is the true fact of the matter, for example I know of 4
kinds of old scrolls held by the clans of Ohtomo, Mononobe, Abe, and
Nakatomi. These scrolls are titled: Otomo family “Amatsu Tatara Kishin
no Hibumi — Hyohen no Maki and Kohyo no Maki”, Mononobe family
“Amatsu Tatara Hisshin Ginkoroku — Ryusen no Maki”, Abe family
“Amatsu Tatara Rinpo Hiden — Shingan no Make” and Kuki family
“Amatsu Tatara Nakatomi Hibumi—Nakatomi Kamitsukasa Hihohen”.
Whilst living in the Iga mountains, Ikai Shogun taught Gamon Doshi,
who taught Garyu Doshi, who in Jinpyo Heiji Era (1151-1160)
established the Hakuun Ryu Ninpo system. Garyu Doshi taught
Hachiryu Nyudo, who was an expert of Kosshi-jutsu. Hachiryu Nyudo
taught the system to Kinmon Heibei and Tozawa Hakuunsai (otherwise
known as Tozawa Kaneuji, a retainer of Minamoto Tameto). Tozawa
Hakuunsai taught the system to Hakuun Doshi.
Tozawa Hakuunsai was one of the main pioneers of Hakuun Ryu
Ninpo, with its focus on Gen-jutsu (illusionary techniques). It is
especially famed for the Demon Waza known as: Inki, Doki, Fuki, and
Kaki. This Ninjutsu was thought of as ‘Mystical Ways’.
Hakuun Ryu Ninpo is the parent of Togakure Ryu Ninpo. Techniques
found in Gyokko Ryu, Koto Ryu, Gikan Ryu, Kumogakure Ryu, Kasumi
Ryu rely greatly on those from Hakuun Ryu Ninpo. It was by the order of
Hakuunsai and Hakuun Doshi that use of the Ryu name was halted.
In the Ohbo Era (1161 -1163) Hakuun Doshi, taught Kain Doshi, who
transmitted the teachings on to Togakure Daisuke. Daisuke taught
Shima Kosanta Minamoto No Kanesada, who later started to use his
teacher's name thus becoming the 2nd Generation Head known as
Togakure Daisuke. When Kanesada was 16 years old he was a retainer
of Shogun Yoshinaka. Whilst fighting bravely in battle in July of 1161,
he became seriously injured and passed out. Reviving later he made his
way to the Iga Mountains where he was saved and taught Ninjutsu by
-6-
‘Togakure Ryu Ninpo Tanemura-Ha Shoden-Gata Densho
Copyright: T. Shoto Tanemura 28th August 2010Kain Doshi, Kanesada’s uncle and the 1st Togakure Daisuke. The second
generation Togakure Daisuke (Kanesada) became famous as a Togakure
Ryu Ninja.
After the battle between the North and South Emperors, many of the
defeated soldiers took refuge in those same mountains and their input
into Iga and Koga revolutionized Ninjutsu.
Gamon Doshi always used the expression: “For the Martial Artist a
heart of spiritual harmony is most important! I refuse to teach one who
has no harmony and peace in his soul.” The first sentence written in the
Togakure scroll states: “Do not kill people, either escape or disappear”
and to get this one must learn “flower heart and bamboo spirit”, “God's
Heart and God’s Eyes”, “unification of mind, spirit and body”, in addition
to the entire (Nin) virtues. Tozawa Hakuunsai said: “Banpen Fugyo”- be
unshaken whatever happens (Fudoshin).
After the Second World War, Takamatsu started to re-create the
Ninjutsu part of Tenshin Hyoho, but stopped and then made Togakure
Ryu Ninpo open to the public. He taught this system to some of his
students.
In secret, Takamatsu gave the Fukumoto Yoshio the highest secret part
of Ketsu Inn special Kuji Kiri and he taught Kimura Masaji the last and
highest Kuden of Bikenjutsu. These secret parts are only ever taught to
one person at any time. Tanemura Shoto was taught by Hatsumi Masaji
(Yoshiaki), Fukumoto Yoshio and Kimura Masaji, ete and he used all of
these teachings to establish Togakure Ryu Ninpo Tanemura-Ha on the
date 28th November 1984 including all of those special secret Kuden.
The Togakure Ryu systems are Seishin-Touitsu-ho, Tenmon Chimon,
Henso-jutsu, Ninja Rikugu no Ho, Ninja Shigoku no Hiho, Sokushin
Sosoku Ho, Tongyo no Jutsu, Hiyaku Ho, Shinshin Onshin Ho, Kyojutsu
Tenkan Ho, Tai-jutsu, Syuko-jutsu, Sokko-jutsu, Senban Nage Jutsu
(Shuriken), Kujikiri Hiden (Jumon Ketsu-Inn), Happo Biken, Shinshin
Shingan no Ho, ete.

When you start walking do not breath out, keep your breath below your

and further with just one breath. It is very important and also necessary
for a Ninja to hold his breath for more than 30 seconds, so he is able to
walk through narrow spaces skillfully. To waking any narrow space.

"The essence of Ninniku Seishin is the spirit of the Ninja who has the
power to use patience together with the body, mind and subconscious. It is
this power that one must develop by training hard. The result will lead to
the ability to pocket any insult and later throw it away together with all
traces of resentment (Nintai Seishin).
The true meaning of Nin is Kajo Waraku, having a heart as peaceful,
joyful, and lovely as that of a flower. One should never place the blade
before the heart.
Also very important to acquire, is a good knowledge of diversionary
tactics using both the heart and body, so that in emergencies one will be
able to disappear. This is known as Kyojitsu Tenkan, and is for winning
over evil with the powers of Earth, Water, Fire, Wind and Air in defense of
oneself or country.”

26°NINJUTSU HIKETU-BUN
Budo Hyoho (the theory/strategy of the martial arts) can be used to
protect oneself, however, the highest principles of self defense are to be
found in Ninjutsu. This is because with Ninjutsu you are able to protect
your spirit as well. More importantly, one must understand that if you
do not maintain the correct heart in the martial way you are likely to
cause yourself injury or death.
Take for example medicine; it is not only used to cure people but can
also be used to kill. We need drink and food to live, if taken to excess
though (ie overeating) this will destroy our body. Politicians have the
responsibility to serve and protect the people, but if one has too much
desire/greed and does not have enough wisdom or even cherishes his
own life too much the country will be thrown into disorder and this will
cause suffering to the people. The same is true for religion; if is true
and sincere , then it’s correctness will be shown in its actions; to protect
oneself, to support your family, too make society prosper, but if this is
an evil way then the reverse will happen, you may lose your life and put
your family in danger.

fay then one is able to understand the will of Heaven.
This is Shin-Shin Shin-Gan. It is a prerequisite for a Ninja to be
righteous and have this understanding. To accept someone into
studying Ninjutsu one must be able to foresee their good or evil
intentions and only afterwards let them enter as a student.
Ninjutsu is said to have come from China by Ikou, Cho Busho and Cho
Gyokko. Though this is accepted as a theory it is very difficult to say so

settled in Iga, they brought with them and transmitted the knowledge
of Karate Hicho Jutsu, Koto Koppo Jutsu, Senban Nage Jutsu, etc.,
which are the main foundations of Ninjutsu.
In later years these Chinese settlers were able to master the secrets of
Shin-Shin Shin-Gan by meditating on a rock in the middle of the
mountains of Iga and achieve enlightenment. It is said that later
generations also came for esoteric study to meditate on this rock. The
rock is still to this day to be found in Sada-zai in Iga and in the past
was called Tojin-Fuchi.
So what did these Chinese settlers learn at this rock? They learnt to
use, even though they be unarmed and their opponent armed, their
willpower to subdue their opponent and they were also able to use
Kujikiri, (mentioned in another chapter)-to knock an opponent down or

8. Kisha Jutsu,
collectively they are known as Happo Biken Jutsu.
Later the secret, or Biken, techniques of the Ninjas special Kodachi
(short sword) and Daito (long sword) were added and so called Happo
Biken Jutsu. A martial art which uses the number 9 and has 9 methods
or ways makes for absolute victory and one must use this for the study
of their way.
