ANTARCTICA’S ROSS SEA

Emperors of the Antarctic Expedition

Dear Adventurer,

No matter how many times you have visited the great white continent of Antarctica, you have probably never stood
surrounded by the lords of that land, emperor penguins, the largest of all penguin species and regarded as the
most difficult birds to see in their natural habitat. During this voyage Antarctica is bathed in almost 24 hours of
continuous daylight, reflecting off enormous glaciers and towering icebergs beset in mile after mile of frozen fast
ice. Combine this splendor with the most majestic of penguins and the sub-Antarctic islands of New Zealand and
Australia, and you have our 31-day Ross Sea expedition.

In terms of diversity and contrast, the sub-Antarctic islands of the eastern hemisphere have few equals. On Macquarie,
thousands of king penguins jostle for space with millions of royal penguins. Classified as nature reserves and
administered by the New Zealand Department of Conservation—the Snares, Auckland, and Campbell Islands are
safe havens for countless birds and mammals seeking breeding grounds. We will search for endemic species such
as the Campbell Island teal, Auckland Island shag, and Snares crested penguin along with handsome yellow-eyed
penguins and the majestic southern royal albatross, which breed throughout the sub-Antarctic islands.

We plan to spend ten days in the Ross Sea region searching for emperor penguins and the elusive Ross seal.
Ice conditions determine our exact schedule, but we hope to land on the continent in the vicinity of Cape Adare,
Cape Hallet, and Terra Nova Bay. Helicopter flightseeing over the Dry Valleys is a special highlight.

We are offering this voyage aboard one of our favorite icebreakers, the Kapitan Khlebnikov, in conjunction with
Quark Expeditions. It will be a voyage celebrating the ship as it is her penultimate voyage; she is ending her service
in the spring of 2012. Zegrahm Expeditions cofounders Mike Messick, Peter Harrison, and Shirley Metz will join
Quark’s expedition team along with a contingent of experts who will lecture on the history, geology, and marine and
bird life of the Antarctic continent and sub-Antarctic islands. We hope you can join us on this truly exceptional voyage.

Warmest regards,

Jon Nicholson
