The Sussex Village Board approved a

charter ordinace Oct. 27 that would
increase the terms of village trustees and
the village president from two to three
years.
The motion was approved 6-1, with
Trustee Tim Dietrich voting against the
proposal. The change would take effect
starting with the April 2017 election.
With the change, the trustee candidate
with the highest number of votes in the
April 2017 election will be elected to a
three-year term while the other two
trustee candidates will be elected to two
year terms. In the April 2018 election, the
two trustee candidates with the highest
number of votes will be elected to a threeyear term while the candidate with the
third-most votes will be elected to a twoyear term.
After two election cycles, all terms will
be on the three year term.
The ordinance will take effect after 60
days. If residents challenge the charter
ordinance with a petition, it could go to a
referendum.
At the start of discussion, Village
President Greg Goetz noted that other
communities have three year terms.
Goetz said that the first years for a
trustee on the board are "a learning expe-

Falls district reviews home school sports policy

The Menomonee Falls School Board
got a first look Oct. 26 at a proposed
policy that will address how students in
the district who are home schooled or
attend parochial schools can participate
in district extracurricular activities.
The provision, which was included
in the state budget approved and signed
into law over the summer, is often
referred to as the Tim Tebow rule" after
the University of Florida quarterback
who played high school football in his
home state under a similar rule. A similar rule has been in place in Minnesota.
"The WIAA turned around and said
we have to support this, it's law now,"
Menomonee Falls Athletic Director Ryan
Anderson said, referring to the entity
which oversees high school sports in
Wisconsin.
In response, the WIAA created language to support the new requirement.
Anderson said there has been discussion
among athletic directors statewide of

how to comply with the rule. For
Menomonee Falls, there were no home
school or parochial school students who
participated in fall sports under the
rule, while one student has signed up
for a winter sport.
The policy includes existing language stating the student must comply
with WIAA rules, along with public
school rules and regulations.
The policy comes with procedures
for how it will be followed. Along with
procedures followed by Menomonee
Falls district students, a requirement
was added requiring students in home
school or parochial school programs to
provide a birth certificate to prove date
of birth.
Anderson said he is asking applicants under the provision if they're participating on an online-based program
through another school district. If that
is the case, the student cannot participate in Menomonee Falls activities but
instead has to participate in activities
through the school district providing
their online program.
"We are not allowed to allow them
in," Anderson said of Menomonee Falls
residents who are educated through an
online program who seek to apply to
participate in Menomonee Falls
extracurricular activities.
School Board member David Noshay
asked if there are tax dollars brought
into the school district in home school
or parochial education who participate
in Falls extracurricular activities.
"There is no financial gain other
than their participation fee," Anderson
said.
Noshay said he didn't have any
problem with the programming, but
said "it is another unfunded mandate.
Just so the public understands, there
might be financial implications to the

district that we are obligated by law to
take in those students. Although we're
allowed to charge fees, its the same fees
that the parents who paying school
taxes are allowed to pay."
Board member Michele Divelbiss
cited another situation that could occur
in which a Menomonee Falls student
who becomes academically ineligible
could then withdraw from school, and
apply to participate in extracurricular
programming a week later under the
home school rule.
"The WIAA is working on language
to tighten that up. The transfer rules,
they're going to talk about that at our
area meetings this fall," Anderson said.
The policy will return to the board
at a future meeting for final consideration.

Gingerbread Land holiday show to open at the Domes Nov. 21

Gingerbread Land, a holiday floral
show filled with gingerbread houses,
gingerbread folk, and a giant holiday
tree decorated with gingerbread cookies and other sweets, will open
Saturday, Nov. 21, at 9 a.m. The
Domes, Milwaukees Living Landmark,
is located at 524 S. Layton Blvd.
Featured plants in the show will be
those that provide the ingredients for
gingerbread. Cinnamon verum, Sugar
Cane, Ginger Root, and Vanilla Orchids
will be set against a backdrop of hundreds of dark red, white, and light
pink Poinsettias, numerous white
Chrysanthemums and Cyclamen, and

lime green and maroon Coleus.
The focal point of the show will be
the holiday tree. Multi-colored lights,
gingerbread cookies that resemble the
many gingerbread folk throughout the
show, red and white striped peppermints and candy canes, and white garlands that could be mistaken for icing
will make the tree fit perfectly in
Gingerbread Land.
To complement the holiday show,
Mr. and Mrs. Claus will make appearances. Saturday, Dec. 12, Santa will be
in the Domes Annex from 11 a.m.-
noon and in the Show Dome from

noon-3 p.m. On Saturday, Dec. 19,
from noon-3 p.m., both Mr. and Mrs.
Claus will be in the Show Dome.
A variety of performances are being
scheduled at The Domes throughout
the holiday season. Entertainment will
include singing, dancing, and skits by
Kids Korp and musical performances
by students of the Wisconsin
Conservatory of Music as well as the 70
tuba players of TUBACHRISTMAS. The
full schedule will be posted and
updated on the website.
Last year over 41,000 people visit-
ed the holiday show, one of the most

popular shows of the year.
Entrance to Gingerbread Land is
included with regular Domes admission. Admission for adults age 18 and
over is $7; Milwaukee County Seniors
with ID, persons with disabilities, students of any age with ID, and youth
age 6-17 are $5. Children 5 and under
are admitted for free.

Dear Dr. Winter, I have been told by my

dentist to have laser surgery to fix my gum
disease. Can you comment on whether this is
safe and if it is better than the deep cleanings I
have been getting for years?
Dear Jan, we now have a CO2 Superpulsed
laser at Hampton Dental Associates. The CO2
laser is the most widely studied laser on the
market today with the most University
supported articles outlining their safety and
effectiveness. I can tell you that lasers are
wonderful tools in dentistry if they are used
correctly. The ADA Council on Scientific
Affairs has recently published a position paper
on lasers and how they are used in dentistry.
Some of the salient points of their paper are as
follows:
There are currently more than twenty
cleared indications for use for dental lasers in
the United States.
According to the ADA position paper: The
dental literature indicates that when lasers are
used as an adjunct to meticulous root planing,
mechanical or chemical curettage (i.e., the
intentional removal of the epithelial lining of
the sulcus) (lasers) offer no consistent benefit
beyond scaling and root planing alone with
respect to gain of the periodontal attachment.
Additional clinical data from properly
designed clinical trials with adequate sample
sizes are still required before it can be known to
what extent LANAP (Laser assisted new
attachment procedures) are safe and effective
across the spectrum of patients with chronic
periodontitis.
So while lasers can be used for removing
lesions, performing frenectemies (removing
tissue that holds tongues or lips down) and
many other soft tissue applications it has not
been found to definitively treat gum disease. If

Bob was a proud WWII Veteran, a

the American Legion Post 382. He was
a retired Village employee. Previous to
that, Bob was a former business owner
and operator of Bobs Conoco Service
Station which was on the corner of
Pilgrim and Main Street. He was a member of St. Marys Parish. Born and
raised, lived and worked in Menomonee
Falls until retiring to Crooked Lake,
Wisconsin for 25 years to return to
Menomonee Falls several years ago. Bob
will be greatly missed my his family and

Hamilton loses
regional in shootout

The Sussex Hamilton boys soccer team didnt want a

repeat moment going into the 2015 Division 1 regional final,
Oct. 24, at home. The Chargers tried to avoid what ended
their season last year when they lost in the sectional final
match on penalty kicks. Despite outplaying seventh-seeded
Hartford in a physical match, No. 2 Hamilton lost on penalty kicks to the Orioles in a 1-1 final.
Two things changed the outcome of the game: a breakdown in the Chargers defense that allowed the Orioles to tie
the game and a goal by Hamilton that should have counted.
One of the assistant referees, who stood on the sideline near
the right side of the Hamilton goalpost, ruled that the shot
by junior forward Ryan Feuerstein was no good because from
his observation, Feuerstein was behind the goal line.
I absolutely thought that it was a goal, Hamilton coach
Steve Provan said. One of the ARs (assistant referee near
the Hamilton bench) said he believed that it was a goal. Its
hard because thats a situation where the refs on the side
had a hard time seeing whats going on. So I told my guys
when they came (to the bench) that they cant worry about
that stuff. We got to put (the game) away.
Hartford set the tone of the game in the first half by
attacking the Hamilton defense and committing lots of fouls,
but that didnt stop the Chargers from launching hard, closerange shots that kept Hartford senior keeper Nicholas
Lindner on his toes and making some great saves. In the
25th minute, Hartford junior midfielder Nathaniel Seibolds
aggressive play wasnt overlooked by the referee. He received
a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct. Five seconds
before halftime, sophomore striker Andrew Driessen received
a yellow card, which was the second for the Orioles. It was
scoreless at the half.
I just told (my team) that we need to execute in the
final third (of the field) and get some shots on goal, Provan
said. We were trying to get through (Hartford). They did an
effective job by packing guys in the (penalty) box. So I told
them that we just need to start putting some pressure on
them and put some shots on goal.
Just 15 seconds in the second half, junior forward and
team captain Connor Provan muscled past Hartford defender
Ethan Hanisko and hit a shot that rolled into the left corner
of the net for a 1-0 Hamilton lead. A free kick from about 48
yards by senior defender Ben Krolczyk that went into the net
was wiped out by an offside call in the 60th minute.
The disallowed goal in the 73rd minute by Hamilton
became a momentum booster for Hartford. Senior midfielder
Alex Tomashek blasted a shot from the right side to tie the
match at 1-1. We had one breakdown in the back (line) that
allowed their player break through (the defense) and he hit
a nice shot, Provan said.
Both teams didnt score in the two 10-minute overtime
periods, so the match went to a shootout that Hartford won,
4-3. It was a tough way for Hamilton to end the season on
their home field. Its tough to lose in the PKs, Provan said.
We outplayed these guys. We outshot them by a large margin (16-7). Unfortunately, we couldnt put the ball in the
net. The Chargers, who tied for second place in the Greater
Metro Conference with a 5-2 record, finished their season at
14-5-3.

Homestead rallies to beat Falls

After winning the first game in a regional final
against Homestead Oct. 24, Menomonee Falls came
up short in two close games and lost to the
Highlanders 25-10, 15-25, 21-25, 23-25.
"As good as we were offensively in the first
game that's how good they were for the most for
the rest of the match," Menomonee Falls Coach J.C.
Bruns said afterward. "We knew that was going to
be their strength, (Homestead's Allie Beckers) is a
fantastic hitter from anywhere on the floor. We
tried to neutralize her, and weren't able to. It's a
testament of how good she is."
Menomonee Falls jumped out to a 10-4 lead in
the first game and finished with a 4-1 run. In the
second game, the teams were tied 9-9 when
Homestead scored nine straight points to equalize
the set.
In the third game Menomonee Falls and
Homestead were tied 20-20 when Homestead
scored three straight points, forcing a Menomoene
Falls time out. Menomonee Falls scored once more
before Homestead closed out the game.
In the fourth game Menonmonee Falls tied the
score at 20-20 on a kill by Mackenzie Robertson.

But Homestead answered with a tip by Emma
Szypszak and followed that with a block to take a
22-20 lead. A tip by Robertson and a kill by Rachel
Murphy evened the score for Menomonee Falls, but
Beckers responded with a kill for Homestead. After
a timeout, a block by Homestead closed out the
set.
Beckers led Homestead with 17 kills while
Robertson had 10 kills for Menomonee Falls.
Bruns later added that Homestead's offense dictated Menomonee Falls "being out of system too
much and made things easier for them. They certainly made some plays, both with their block and
their back row."
While Menomonee Falls was seeded third and
Homestead seeded sixth, Bruns noted the sectional bracket is deep and the match "wasn't your
ordinary three versus six matchup."
"We're disappointed in how we finished. We
thought we'd at least get past this weekend,"
Bruns added.

Cross country: Germantown teams qualify for state

The Germantown boys and girls cross

country teams placed second at the
Homestead sectional Oct. 24, earning a
trip to the state cross country meet in
Wisconsin Rapids the next weekend.
The top two teams and top five runners who aren't on the top two teams
qualify for the state meet.
The Germantown boys team finished
second to Homestead. Germantown was
led by Craig Reese and Jacob DuFrane,
who placed ninth and 10th with times of
17:03 and 17:05. They were followed by
Jake Garvey (13th, 17:09), Dylan Ayer
(15th, 17:17) and Evan Adair (15th,
17:17), with Adair moving up two spots
within the final 100 yards of the finish
line. Also running for Germantown were
Joe Biesel (36th, 17:57) and Westin Feltz
(44th, 18:19).
"It's always good to make is as a
team," DuFrane said.
DuFrane said the focus over the week
improving on positions at the meet.
Germantown Coach Harris Jones said
the third through fifth runners (Garvey,
Ayer and Adair) moved up positions during the race, something which the team
focused on during the season.
"That is something they responded to
well today," Jones said.
Jones, who moved from assistant
coach to head coach at the start of the
season after Andy Bavlnka was hired for
an administrative post in Muskego, said
the team "is a great group of boys to work
with, they've continued the leadership

and the mentality of hard work that obviously carried us to our success today."
The Germantown girls team finished
second to Whitefish Bay. Germantown was
led by Sami Stieve and Alyssa Goesch,
who finished fourth and eighth with
times of 20:02 and 20:31. They were followed by Calli Lemke (16th, 20:55),
Jennifer Lindgren (17th, 20:58) and
McKenna Klopfer (20th, 21:02). Also running for Germantown were Molly Baus
(37th, 22:08) and Lydia Boyd (48th,
22:41).
"It wasn't about time, it was about

explained that as the girls came around
the final corner, "it looked so good and
they've been running so well. We've had
some glitches along the way and we've
butted heads, but for this it's worth it."
Pietrowiak noted that the team

Lemke said she remembered last year.
"I still remember the tears, we were all
crying afterwards. It's such a different situation we're in now, we're so excited."
The results from last year served as
the motivation for the team to work over
the summer, Lemke said.
"After the race ended last year and the
disappointment we knew we were going to
work hard and get back this year if we
really wanted to go to state," Lemke said.
Lemke said the team "ran smarter" at
the sectional than the conference meet the week before,

Hamilton welcomes students from Germany

Welcome GAPP Exchange Students.
This has been the message greeting
German American Partnership Program
(GAPP) exchange students who arrived
in the Hamilton School District Oct. 17
and will stay until Nov. 2. Hamilton
German Club members have been working feverishly to make arrangements
involved with hosting 25 exchange students and two teacher-chaperones from
the city of Reutlingen, Germany.
The GAPP exchange opportunity is
again offered at Hamilton to promote
international understanding among
young people and provide students with
an opportunity to learn German in an
immersion experience. German teachers
Lindsey Klein, Eric Schultz and
Katherine Leitzke are excited about
what this exchange means to Hamilton
German language students.
The amount of work it takes to put
together an exchange is unbelievable,
said Klein. However, the friendships
that are made are priceless, the language usage and learning that takes
place is unteachable in a classroom, and
the appreciation of travel and culture
are indescribable.
Two days after the exchange students arrived, Hamilton sophomore and
German Club member Alyssa Grove said,
I have never been so happy! But, I am
going to be really sad when we have to

Hamilton families and students are
hosting the German guests. This summer 21 Hamilton students traveled to
Reutlingen for a three-week exchange

at the Johannes-Kepler-Gymnasium, a
college-preparatory secondary school.
While in Germany, Hamilton students
attended classes at the school and visited many places of historical and cultural interest.

Templeton honors
veterans at ceremony
Templeton Middle School will recognize the contributions of American veterans Nov. 6 beginning at 8:30 a.m. at
its 15th Annual Veterans Day Program.
Visitors are asked to arrive at 8:15 a.m.
First Lieutenant Charlotte Koshick
will give the Veterans Address. Koshick
serves as a nuclear science medicine
officer.
A ceremonial laying of the wreaths
will honor soldiers who became prisoners of war or missing in action. Guest
veterans who attend the program will
be individually introduced and their
military service recognized.
Students will honor the countrys
veterans during the ceremony as well.
The Student Council President will
lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
The Eighth Grade Chorus and
Eighth Grade Band will perform a patriotic song
The Patriotic Essay Contest winner
will read his or her essay.
Music teacher Jaye Mier is coordinating a video production that will feature photos of military personnel and
veterans who are related to Templeton
students. The video will play continuously in the school lobby starting Oct.
30 and will be featured during the ceremony.
Following the program, honored veterans will be invited to participate in a
small reception in the Large Group
Area. All veterans and public officials

Hamilton band to sell citrus
Hamilton High School band members have refreshing holiday gift ideas
and their purchase will benefit students. They are selling fresh Florida
navel oranges, tangerines, tangelos,
Indian River ruby red grapefruit, red
delicious apples and pears.
Fruit will be packed in boxes of various sizes priced from $20 to $40 per
box. Community members may choose
from 20 different purchasing options
that include just one type of fruit per
box or fruit combinations. Detailed
information about options and prices is
posted on the district website in the
fundraising section.
Students will sell the fruit until Nov.
6. It will arrive on Dec. 8 and will be
delivered to customers' homes.
The tree-ripened fruit is selected
from the top 15 percent of the crop and
has passed inspection by the U.S.
Department of Agriculture and the
Florida Department of Citrus. It is suitable for gift-giving. If stored in a refrigerator or cool, dry basement, the fruit
should keep well for about six weeks.

Optimist Club Fall Clean Up
The Optimist Club of Menomonee
Falls is planning the Fall Clean Up of
area Senior Citizen yards for Saturday,
November 7th. Optimist Club members
and area youth groups team up to help

Senior Citizens with their yard work
that day. Any interested Senior Citizen
should call the Community Education &
Recreation Department at 255-8460 for
more details.
All donations (not
required) for the work will be given to
the participating youth organizations.
The motto of the Optimist Club is
Friend of Youth and Bringing out the
Best in Kids. Many community events
are sponsored by the Optimist club such
as the Independence Day Parade, Kids'
Fishing Derby, Adopt A Highway, Leaf
Raking for Senior Citizens, and many
more. Some of the youth projects the
club sponsors are Post Prom, Jr Miss,
Student of the Month, Tri Star Soccer,
and many scholarship opportunities.

Sea Serpent Talk at the Falls Library
Believe it or not, Wisconsin was
once home to many lakes that were
inhabited by large serpent-like beings.
Author Chad Lewis is going to speak
about Sea Serpents of Wisconsin on
Thursday, November 12 at 7pm. Filled
with newspaper accounts, witness drawings, and photographs, this program
takes a look at where the serpents were,
and where many think they still are.

paranormal topics from around the

Locations and The Bizarre History of

Mike, an old cat named Elmo, and a
Welsh Corgi named Wendy.
Mr. Dickens was a Victorian writer
and a keen observer of social concerns
and poverty in that era. In commemoration the library will have a
Menomonee Falls Food Pantry box right
by the Meeting Room door. If anyone
