universities. To achieve this requires time and consistency
In order to evaluate and improve the
performance and discuss the various
design of issues that must be followed up
this year, the university held an Executive
Working Meeting (Rakerpim) in Syahida
Inn, Thursday-Friday (14-15/1). The
meeting was attended by heads of the
university, faculties, departments, work
units and study centers of UIN.
In his welcoming speech Rector
Prof Komaruddin Hidayat said that this
Rakerpim was held at the end of his
tenure this year. In his last term of office,
the rector intended to make strategic
policies that can improve the quality of
UIN in the years to come.
According to the rector, some
government officials were very impressed
to see the physical development, the
accomplishment and political and social
communication that UIN has achieved.
He requested that everything that has
been achieved must be maintained and
be something to be grateful for. “In the

future, we want UIN to gradually become
a university or icon that Indonesian Muslim
can be proud of. We must be convinced

remain committed to give opportunities to
boarding school communities to study at
UIN. The support to boarding community
is a special character of the campus.
Under his leadership, the rector asserted
that the leadership has always tried to
improve the facilities and infrastructures
that are needed by academic community.
Some of the facilities that have been
built under his leadership are Psychology
Faculty Building, Ma’had Ali, bank,
hospital, canteen and bus shelter.
In addition, the leadership also has
provided training and scholarship for
lecturers, and has created a financial
reporting system which is more
transparent and accountable. Besides
that, in the future UIN has planned
the improvement of the quality of
academic and administration service,
the reinforcement of more transparent
and accountable financial system, the
improvement in information system and
student service, construction of digital
library, construction of Faculty of Social
and Political Sciences Building and the
construction of larger hall/auditorium.

Provides “Study
Rooms”
Students of Graduate school (SPs)
now can study comfortably as SPs
has provided a special room to study
which is called “study room” The room
is located on the second floor of grad-
uate school, and it is designed in such
a way that provide comfort in study-
ing
The idea of having study room orig-
inated from the management of SPs,
who noticed that all this time when

there is no class, students studied
outdoors near the garden. Studying
outdoors may be a little bit comfort-
able as students can breathe fresh
air but it gives the impression of not
being exclusive and doesn’t provide a
conducive place to study.
“Studying in an open space also
expose students to rain or heavy
wind. Keeping in mind those risks, we
provide students with a special place
so that they can study more comfort-
ably,” said Prof Dr Suwito, Vice Direc-
tor for SPs Institutional Development,
to UIN Online, Tuesday (16/2).
The special place for SPs program
of master and doctoral degree is on
the second floor. The 5 x 6 meter
square room is designed in such a
way with partitioned rooms. Besides
that to provide ease in studying, every
partition is also provided with plugs
and lockers.
“We expect that Graduate school
students will be more assiduous in
studying and perform scientific re-
searches through the internet,” said
Suwito.
The number of partitioned room
is 32 and can only be filled with one
student, thus students can have their
rights for privacy. Students can also
utilize the plug to use their laptop or
to charge their handphones,” said Su-

I UIN, Wednesday (6/1). The inaugura-
tion was marked with a ribbon cutting
by the Minister who was accompanied
by the Rector of UIN Prof Dr Komaruddin
Hidayat and South Tangerang Mayor HM
Saleh MT.
The Minister also gave assistance in
the form of twenty four Zyrex computer
units to help academic activities in Aca-
demic Section. The symbolic assistance
was given by the Minister to the Rector.
Central Academic Building is a reno-
vated old building. This building has a
number of academic administrative ser-
vice facilities and is designed in such a
way that make it looks more comfortable
and artistic.
The Minister in her speech said, the
Ministry of Trade is currently campaigning
two of its main policies in the field of trade.
The first policy is to continue encouraging
the public to love Indonesian products.
Therefore, currently Indonesian products
are as competitive as foreign products.
“The second policy is that we are en-
couraging people to have creative eco-
nomic businesses, such as in the form of
crafts from renewable raw materials,” she
said.
To the Minister, the Rector explained
that currently, UIN continues to develop
pluralism and inculcate moderate think-
ing among students. In addition UIN also
provides greater opportunities for villag-
ers to go to college. That way, there is a
convergence between traditionalism and
modernism in campus.
The Rector further stated that until
now many foreign diplomats have visited
UIN to learn more about Islam. In fact, the
Foreign Ministry often specifically invites
a number of UIN figures overseas to be-
come “spokesman” of Islam.
“It would also be good if the Ministry
of Industry and Trade can work together
with UIN in developing corporate social re-
sponsibility to help society,” he said.
After inaugurating Academic Building,
the Minister then gave public lecture about
free trade in front of civitas academia in

Post Graduate School Receives
Students for Doctoral Program
without Selection
Doctorate Vocational admission without selection is a form of respect,
trust and guarantee to graduates of Master degree of UIN Jakarta
As of academic year 2009/2010, the
Graduate School of UIN has accepted
new registration for Doctoral Program
(S3) students without selection. However,
the policy only applies to UIN’s Master
graduates (S2) class of 2005 upwards.
As for Master graduates from other
universities are still required to go through
the selection process.

Academic Dr Fuad Jabali, Tuesday (19/1),
said the Doctorate Vocational admission
without selection is a form of respect,
trust and guarantee to graduates of
Master degree of UIN Jakarta. However,
there is no guarantee that UIN Master’s
graduates can complete their study in
the S3 program with ease. This is due to
the new curriculum and a heavier course
load.
“The new curriculum is not easy
now. Therefore, at the beginning of the
semester, there will be mentors who will
assist students.” Fuad explained.
Fuad further explained that students
are required to take the proposal, write
UIN Jakarta will have a Landmark

made 10 meters long and 3.5 meters
high.
The purpose of the construction of

“We expect to not only have one person,
but new generations of UIN graduates like
him (Azyumardi Azra),” he said.
When asked about students who have
difficulty doing research and may not pass
the proposal, Fuad said they would be given
time to develop their research. However, if
a student is unable to pass the proposal
test twice, the student will be disqualified.
In fact, the title that will be given to these
students is Master of Philosophy or MPhil,
which is higher than Master but below

Prof Dr Azyumardi Azra, Rector of
UIN Komaruddin Hidayat, Dean of
FISIP Prof Dr Bahtiar Effendy, and
Chairman of LSAF Prof Dr Dawam
Raharjo.
In his first speech as Minister
of Religious Affairs in UIN Jakarta,
Suryadharma Ali regarded that these
figures deserve respect because
they have shaped the scientific and
intellectual traditions in IAIN. Besides
that, their efforts are accepted by
Indonesian society. The minister
said that the contributions of these
prominent Muslim scholars are what
made it possible for UIN to become
the initiator of contemporary Islamic
political thought. “Hopefully this
award can be an incentive for other
prominent figures to develop Islamic
studies in Indonesia,” he said.

or landmark for UIN Jakarta will be
built with the help of professionals
and will be written “UIN” in blue as can
be seen in the new logo. In the middle
of the word UIN, will be written “Syarif
Hidayatullah Jakarta” in metallic.
The construction of the lettering
will take about two months. It is pre-
dicted to be finished before the 79th
Graduation day next April with the
amount of money spent around Rp

Five Secrets to Attain Fulbright
Scholarships
Selection participants must provide enrollment files, among others en-
rollment form, letter of recommendation from the institution, TOEFL
certificate, academic transcription and photo copy of identity card.

Jakarta attended the presentation on Ful-
bright 2011 Scholarship program held
by The American Indonesian Exchange
Foundation (AMINEF) in Diorama Room,
Monday (1/3).
Isye, the representative of AMINEF
began the presentation by revealing the
secrets of success of those who have at-
tained Fulbright scholarships. The Secret
consist of five matters. The first is sub-
mitting the forms before the deadline for
the submission of forms. Generally, the
submission of forms is usually done up
to April 30.
Objective Study and research pro-
posal writing is the second secret. The
writing of objective study is made by se-
lection participants who want to acquire
S2 scholarship. As for S3 program, par-
ticipants must write both objective study
and research proposal.
The third secret is to determine cor-
rectly the major and the university that is
going to be taken. Selection participants
must write down in the study objective
the reason of their choice.
Participants also have to attach ITP
TOEFL certificate. Almost all Fulbright
programs require a minimum of 550 for
the ITP TOEFL score. After passing the
