0 Introduction

ASF
Dear Madams, Dear Sirs,

we would like to introduce ourselves as manufaturers of anchoring materials for use in the fields of plant engineering, surface and civil engineering
as well as in structural steel and hydraulic engineering.

Anton Schmoll GmbH was founded after the first world war, and conducted its business initially by doing wage work for the local industry. Over the
years the materials and rolling stock increased steadily, creating the basis
for setting up an independent factory of our own. This eventually lead to
space problems which were solved in 1978 when our subsidiary plant was
established in the nearby town of Balve-Garbeck. In the same year Anton
Schmoll GmbH was registered as a limited company. In the meantime the Anton Schmoll GmbH production and storage facilities total a
covered area of 6.000 m2, with a clear tendency towards expansion.

The materials predominantly used at our works are S 355 J2G3 (St 52.3), 42 CrMo 4, 34CrNiMo 6,
1.4301 and 1.4571, covering qualities 4.6, 5.6, 8.8, 10.9, 12.9, A2 and A4 to the greatest possible extent.
The range of materials is rounded off with BST500S concrete reinforcing steel, S460N fine-grained steel,
high temperature steel 21CrMoV57 and also our steel ASF 600. An extensive stock of all these materials,
with rod lengths up to 20 m, ensures short delivery times. The maximum possible single length is 27m.
Forged parts ranging from M 8 - M 150 - 3/8" to 6"- are no problem for our forgingshop.
We
are
also
competent
in
producing
bolts and screws (also with upset threads) with
rolled threads to any required length and with diameters up to M 150, or 6". Our technical staff will be pleased to advice you on the
advantages of this highly efficient alternative as against upset rod anchorages. Cut threads are available with diameters up to M 180. And
of course we also carry out all kinds of drilling, cutting, welding and lathe work.

Most of our products are certified according to -Sign (conformity sign). We have the qualification of manufacturers for the welding of steel
structures according to DIN18800-7 and DIN19704, DIN 18801, DIN 4132. Our company is accredited according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2000.
High standards of quality, keen prices and adherence to agreed delivery dates are only some of the characteristics for which Anton
Schmoll GmbH is well known.

For hydraulic engineering we deliver displacement-injected piles, injection piles and also an extensive program for joining technique and
accessories.
Basically:
- tie rods and connection parts
- waling and waling bolts
- capping profiles
- bollards and ladders
- customised welded constructions

Our technical catalogue is intended to give you an overal impression of our production programme.
Naturally enough, it does not contain our complete range of products and shows only the most frequently used articles and main product lines.
Please contact us if the product you require is not included in our catalogue.

If static and structural conditions
require the anchoring of a pile wall,
this is achieved by mutual support,

In
most
cases,
however,
piles
need
to
be
additionally tied back.
The anchorage constructions
are
chosen
and
constructed
according to static and structural
requirements. Reaction force A,
resulting from static calculations of the
pile wall, as well as the low skidding
joint analysis are decisive for
dimensioning.

DIN 4125 applies for the

2.1.1 Anchorage parts

ASF
2 . 1 . 1 Anchorage parts
Anchor rods should, for structural
reasons, not be thinner than 11/2. It
proved efficient to upset the thread in
order to prevent fatigue in this area.
Such action allows optimal benefit
from the permitted tensions within
the thread core and the thinner
anchor shaft.

Tables 1-3 show the common a ring anchor, or if the construction

cannot be carried out at once.

Tie-rod anchors are usually

sold in two partial lengths. It is
recommended
to
fasten
the
turnbuckles closely behind the main
wall. Thus, the anchor wall can be
supported through setting on the
ground. This, furthermore, allows

Anchor rod with hexagonal nut
diameter. The use of rolled threads,
instead of upset cut threads, offer
numerous advantages such as higher
tensile strength and profile precision
and no interruptions of the steel fibre
structure (dynamic stress capacity),
Eye tie-rod
see also EAU 2004.
As there are different and longer
threads, it is often not necessary to
use an additional turnbuckle.
Apart from common tie-rod
anchorage with double-thread, it is
possible to use anchors with upset
hinge ring or hammerhead anchors
for special connections.

The Whitworth thread, which is

still common, proved as best suitable
in stress tests as well as under rough
conditions on site. Nevertheless,
metric threads are also used.
Dead steel types, according
to DIN EN 10025, must be used.
They are resistant to ageing, brittle
fractures and stress cracks. This
includes the steel types S 235 JR
(formerly: St 37-2) and S 355 J2
G3 (formerly: St 52-3). For economical and safety reasons, it is
common to use steel of the higher S355 J2G3 grade.

2.1.1 Anchorage parts

ASF

The turnbuckles comprise one

left hand thread as well as one right
hand thread to tighten and balance
the entire anchor length.
The rear anchor rod length is
restricted to 20m for reasons of
transport and installation. In order to
obtain longer components, single
rods may be connected by means
of
movable
couplings.
They
comprise a continuous RH thread
and, thus, cannot be used for
tightening.
Supple and tensionable anchor
rod connections can be constructed
by means of turnbuckle hinges.
Shackle joints may be used in special
connections, or in case of expected
settlement.
Constructions comprising upset ring
anchors, splice plates and hinge
bolts should be preferred over
hammerhead constructions, when
regarding hinge effect and assembly.
Double hinges are indicated for
constructions with vertical as well as
horizontal movement.

2.1.2 Connecting parts

ASF
2.1.2 Connecting parts
Anchor connection to the
main wall can be carried out in
the sheet pile recess, either at the
pile front or at the back wale
(tension waling). The distance of
the anchor will then be determined by
the pile spacing.

Tie rod

There are two different types of

base plates: front plates at the main
wall for U-piles, or Z-piles and plates
for connecting the waling to the main
or anchor wall, with or without
additional coupling plate/rolled nut.
The front plates at the main wall should
usually cover 80% of the width of the
pile recess in order to enhance the
diversion of loads.
Anchorage
gradients
may
be
additionally adjusted to the base plate
by means of a tapered plate.

2.1.2 Connecting parts

ASF
In order to prevent bending
stress within the thread connections
due to expected settlements, the
anchor connection should vertically
be supple and freely moving. The
commonly used joint in such cases
is a coupling plate or a semi-roller
coupling plate.

Connection with universal joint

plate

Swivel plate

Swivel nut

The coupling plate comprises an

anchor rod which revolves around a
stem. At moment exposure, stress
occurs at the yield point, which
allows angle distortion without
significant resistance. In case of
roller coupling plates, the distortion is
realised by means of a semi-roller
welded
onto
the
plate.
If,
furthermore, horizontal movement is
expected, either two staggered
hinges may be positioned in a row,
or a universal joint plate may be
used.

Coupling effect through hammerhead

The coupling effect is also

achieved with an anchor rod with
rounded hammerhead.
For sections with low walls, a
coupling plate with thread may be
used (rolled nut) in order to save
nut height.

20

Connection with rolled nut

2.1.2 Connecting parts

ASF
If the anchor rod is considerably
inclined, or if major settlement or
distortion
is
expected;
it
is
recommended to position the anchor
connection in the pile recess but
below the chord. This allows a
minimum wale spreading.
If it is necessary to create an
anchor
spacing,
which
is
independent of pile spacing, anchor
connection is only possible within the
waling.
Different structures
constructed
according
appropriate requirements.

may
to

The connection to a combined

piping pile is commonly carried out
through external splice plates which
are inserted through the pipe top
opening.

Connection with significant anchor

incline

The connection to the anchor

wall is realised at the external
waling (compression waling). A
single connection with base plate is
common. A supple connection may be
necessary when the anchor rod is
embedded in its full length into the
refilled soil and settlement might occur.

2.2 Injection piles

ASF
2.2 Injection piles
Horizontal tie-rod anchorage usually
represents
more
inexpensive
anchorage procedures. If, however,
horizontal
rods
cannot
be
embedded
due
to
differing
conditions,
such
as
close
developments or unsuitable ground,
anchor piles may be used. Here,
anchor forces are diverted through
skin friction between pile and
ground. The diversion of tensile
forces into the ground depends on
numerous factors. It is especially
subject to the soil conditions and the
shape of the pile. Unlike tie-rod
installation, the embedding of

anchor piles does not require earth

movement.
A supple connection
should be preferred to the built-in
hinge in order to compensate
distortions within the connection area
of the sheet pile/anchor pile caused by
bending, settlement and installation
conditions, see also EAU 2004.
There are generally two types of
anchor piles:
- driven steel piles and
- injected steel piles.
The injection pile can be produced
by us up to a single length of 27 m.
Depending on quality, it can be

26

extended to any length by a welded

joint or a nut joint. Depending on
performance, stretch limitation values
of at least 355 to at least 600 N/mm2
can be guaranteed. Furthermore, all
wall connections like upset threads,
eye or T-head are possible. Use
according to DIN 4125 / DIN 4128 is
mathematically possible. The injection
pile has already
been implemented
successfully for ARGE Logport in
Rheinhausen,
Port
Walsum
in
Duisburg, Kaje Neuer Hafen in
Bremerhaven, Port HKM in Duisburg
and Port Ludwigshafen.

3.2 Waling construction

Waling is usually constructed
from two spread U-steel sections
with
their
webs
being
perpendicularly positioned towards
the sheet pile. Therefore it can be
used an UPE or an UNP beam.
Other steel sections such as
LARSSEN piles and
I-sections
and/or a capping beam
waling
systems may also be used.
Reinforced steel wales are
mainly used for anchor walls.
Exceptions apply for pile anchorage
and compensational structures for
uneven sheet pile constructions.

3.2 Wale construction

ASF
In order to achieve the
necessary distance between the two
U-sections, wale spreader consisting
of pitched U-steel rods or web plates
are welded piecewise on the pile.
The grade of spreading depends on
the diameter and incline of the
anchorage. It is necessary to allow
for a sufficient spreading in order to
keep the anchor rods away from the
waling.

Support

Heavy anchorage as well as in

case of direct connection between
anchorage and wale, reinforcing
bracing of the wale U-section at the
anchorage is essential.
Supplied waling parts are much
longer than the distances between
each
anchorage.
Splices
are
positioned at the places with the least
stress. An entire diameter splice is
not
necessary
although
the
calculated internal forces must still
be covered. Proper splices are
usually realised through attached Usections which are delivered ready
for installation with necessary
boreholes.

Welded splices do not require proper
adjustment if they are staggered and
structurally fully connected.

3.3 Wale mounting

ASF
3.3 Wale mounting
The waling must be connected with
the sheet pile (main pile) so that
occurring forces can be properly
diverted. In order to facilitate the
installation and the diversion of vertical
forces,
wales
are
borne
by
appropriately dimensioned and welded
supports.
These usually consist of cut or burned,
plates although other variations are also
possible.
If the workspace is limited below
the waling, a suspension on the sheet
pile is constructed. The suspensions
are either welded onto the waling or
attached to the base plate of the
waling. A small mounting angle is
additionally welded onto the sheet pile.

3.3 Wale mounting

ASF
The LARSSEN waling bolts are
able to absorb vertical and horizontal
forces; a special wale support is not
necessary. Internal wales (tension
wale) must be carefully attached to
the sheet pile.

The wale bolts are located

within the wale sections web and
divert the loads to the base plates.
There is, on the one hand, the front
plate in the sheet pile recess
(HOESCH piles consist of two parts
due to the interlock at the pile
back), and on the other hand, the
back plate at the waling.
Waling can be screwed or welded
onto the bottom backside of the sheet
pile for the diversion of axial forces.
However, this may also be realised
by means of bar shear connectors
which are welded onto the wale and
are supported by the sheet pile web.

In order to divert horizontal

forces to the waling, and to align
the wall, strong wale bolts are
necessary. (min. 11/2). Sufficient
dimensioning is also necessary with
splice spacing in a lotic zone as
well as in case of corrosion risk. In
order to render waling bolts suitable
for wall alignment, they must be of
sufficient length. There are two bolt

types: Bolts with upset hexagon head,
and bolts with double-sided thread. the connection is usually carried
out through the waling which is
located

wall

Wale
mounting is not necessary for static
reasons. It is sufficient to position
the wales on waling supports.

4 Profiled capping plates

ASF
Permanent sheet pile
constructions are fitted with a top
finish made from steel or reinforced
steel. The construction is realised
according to structural and operational aspects but also to static
criteria if the beam is intended to
divert bearing reaction (beam wale).
If it has sufficient bending stiffness,
the beam wale allows wall top
alignment, load share in operational
mode, and prevents uneven
deflection.

The rolled or pressed UNION

beams are common, whose bead
forms a clearly visible top finish of
the sheet pile and prevents the
wear through of ropes. The
combination with an entirely
pinned or checkered horizontal
surface results in good anti-skid
protection. The UNION beam is
usually either welded through
universal mill plates or screwed by
means of an angle onto the sheet
pile. If the beam is also used as a
wale, such must be constructed
and dimensioned according to
EAU 2004.

Steel beams usually meet the

requirements and are characterised
by easy installation.
Welded design

Screwed design

Weight calculation:
(A+B-10) x C x Length x 0.785
Measures A and B depend from the steel pile wall profile and angle.
Thickness C: 8/10/12 mm
All designs can be delivered with or without slide protection.

5 Ancilliary equipment

ASF
Equipment for quay walls intended
for ship landing, include bollards,
ladders and stairways.

Single-bitt bollard

5.1 Bollards
Mooring facilities include singlebitt bollards, cross bollards, recess
bollards (reinforced concrete walls),
dolphins, chocks, pad eyes etc.
Their construction should allow
easy repair and replacement.
Single-bitt bollards on top of
the quay wall can be constructed as
either single or double bollards
according to the necessary bollard
forces. Their diameter must exceed
15cm. They are made of high-quality
cast iron or cast steel and fitted with
S355 J2G3 (St 52-3) anchorage parts.

Double-bitt bollard

They can either be structurally

attached to the beam, or behind
such, anchored in a concrete
foundation.
Depending
on
dimensioning, a rear anchorage may
be necessary. In order to prevent a
sheet pile overload due to extreme
rope stress, retractile anchors, which
are conform to nominal load, may be
considered.

42

5.1 Bollards

ASF

Apart from the top bollards, further

bollards must be installed in different
heights at the sheet pile, according to
local water level change.
Such
cross
bollards
are
perpendicularly superposed in the
sheet pile recess as well as positioned
on both sides of the respective ladder.
They can be fastened by welding or
through bolts. The front edge of the
replaceable bollard finger should be
located 5cm behind the quay front
edge.
Mooring facilities in dolphins
include capstans and lateral capstans.

also
in
emergencies. They must lead up to
1m below minimum low water level
and/or minimum low tide.
In order to facilitate easy
assembly and replacement, the
bottom mount fixture is an insertion
connection. At the ladder recess, the
beam is pulled back behind the
steps. Quays without flood danger
are furthermore equipped with
chocks with a diameter of 40mm,
which projects 30cm above the quay
top edge. They are situated 55cm
behind the shore line.
