A note from the superintendent
“The future looks bright and our commit-
ment to the students of the Mount Ayr Com-
munity is second to none.”
On behalf of the Board of Education, our
entire staff, and everyone associated with
the “Vote OK” Committee, I would like to
sincerely “thank” the Mount Ayr Commu-
nity for their incredible support during the
building project.
The Mount Ayr Community School Dis-
trict evaluated its facilities in 2006 and
began a two-year campaign to modernize
and equip our schools for the 21st century.
Staff members were involved in the needs
assessment and began looking at what was
needed to provide a quality education for
the students of our district.
Building codes, handicapped accessibili-
ty, structural issues, plumbing and electrical
deficiencies all contributed to the need for
the renovation and new facility. With the
completed project, both buildings are now
completely heated and cooled with the use
of geothermal ground source heat pumps.
In addition, new energy technologies were
installed to make the new facilities as en-
ergy efficient as possible.
The secondary addition will allow for in-
creased middle school physical education
and allow flexibility for increased academ-
ic time. Our middle school students will
no longer have to walk to the elementary
school to practice and compete. It will also
provide greater academic access for our al-
ternative school students who will now be
served in the new addition of our secondary
building.
The elementary addition will provide
modern fifth and sixth grade classrooms, a
separate lunchroom and kitchen, a multipur-
pose gym, a vocal music classroom and a
new office area. Renovations to our existing
structure will provide the elementary build-
ing with a new art room and an early child-
hood classroom. We are very excited about
the new “Peggy Whitson Science Lab.” The
district has received over $50,000 in grant
money to outfit one of the most remarkable Superintendent Russ Reiter
elementary science labs in the state.
Education is ever-changing and with the our belief that with the current facilities, we
need for modern technology in the class- will be able to provide the best possible ed-
room, the district can now boast a complete ucation for all our students for many years

Elementary School Addition
From top, from left: new classrooms for fifth and sixth
grades and the early kindergarten programs are part of the
building additions. The music room and stage is separated
from the multipurpose gymnasium by a partition. The new
cafeteria and kitchen are very popular and can be used for
other purposes when not needed for meals. The new sci-
ence lab, which will be named for Dr. Peggy Whitson, is
still being assembled and is being set up with money from
grants from several sources. Lockers are in the hallways
for the fifth and sixth grade students in their new section of
the school. The new art room provides much more space
for the program along withe new equipment like a kiln.
The teacher workroom provides space and the main office
has more space as well. New rest rooms are available in
the addition along with small locker rooms.
