The most romantic weddings on land — or sea

Love is different things to different people. No matter how you look at it, great love requires a special place in
which to share it — and few venues rival the romance of a Holland America Line cruise.
On board everything revolves around romance: spacious guest rooms with private verandahs, candlelit dining
rooms, couples massages in the Greenhouse Spa & Salon, teak promenade decks perfect for moonlight strolls —
and an award-winning crew ready to create a once-in-lifetime experience, every time. It’s no wonder the readers
of Modern Bride magazine named Holland America Line “Best Honeymoon, Top Ten Cruise Lines.”

Meadow Vista couple’s wedding plans

K
eil Barnard and Sierra Bloom-
field knew they wanted to get
married, but committing to a
date proved to be a little more of a chal-
lenge.
The couple had already been dating
for more than three years when Keil pro-
posed, on May 31, 2008.
Sierra and Keil both enjoy hiking, and
took a weekend trip with their dog, Roxy
up to Lake Tahoe. The day Keil pro-
posed, the couple, along with Roxy,
embarked on a hike up to Lake Aloha,
with the goal of picnicking by the water.
“Unfortunately, it was so snowy that
we lost the trail,” Sierra said. “We ended
up hiking a little further up to this gor-
geous snowy peak.”
While Sierra was pulling lunch — ham
sandwiches and champagne — out of
her backpack, Keil made his move.
“When I turned around, Keil was
down on his knee with my ring glinting
in the sunlight,” she said. “ I cried, our
dog almost ate our lunch while we
weren’t looking, and we finished enjoy-
ing the view while talking about our
future plans.”
The couple’s initial plan was to have a
two-year engagement, as both wanted
to wait until Sierra graduated from col-
lege. Two years turned into 12 months,
and Keil and Sierra set their sights on
June 6, 2009.
Keil, a senior airman in the United
States Air Force, found out on April 15 of
that year he was being deployed to Kyr-
gyzstan. The wedding was re-scheduled
for May 3, 2009, a little less than a year
after Keil’s proposal.

stress and just be happily married!”
Sierra said re-scheduling the wedding
was quite stressful, but that her mom,
Sherri Bloomfield, took control of the
situation.
“We were able to keep all of the plans
exactly the same,” Sierra said. “The only
difference was we got married on a Sun-
day, and initially we were planning on a
Saturday. We had planned to get married
outside, but it rained the day of the
wedding, so we had to move the cere-
mony inside last minute.”
One of the only things Sierra wishes
could have changed was the weather.
All the details worked out in the end.
Sierra found her dress at Simply Striking
in Auburn. Her wedding ring is from
Roper’s Jewelers and Keil’s ring is from
Robards Fine Jewelers, both Auburn
jewelers. Christie Metcalf from Auburn’s
Visions Salon styled Sierra’s hair.
Sierra’s favorite part of her wedding Sierra Bloomfield and Keil Barnard had to bump up their wedding date when
day was the reception. Keil found out he was being deployed.
“I had so much fun,” she said. “It was
like a big party with great food and
music.
“I think having the live band there,
having our favorite restaurant, Luigi’s,
cater, the open bar, and having the
relaxed, fun, atmosphere really made it
unique to us. It was the perfect wedding
for us!”
The couple’s first dance as man and
wife was Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful
Tonight.”
“This has always been our song, so it is
very special to us,” Sierra said.
The couple did have to postpone their
honeymoon on account of the schedul-
ing change.
“We had a honeymoon booked in
Cozumel,” Sierra said. “We were plan-
ning on staying at this all-inclusive
resort. We had to cancel, because Keil
left less than a week after our wedding.
We plan to reschedule, but we’re so busy.
I’m getting my teaching credentials right
now, and Keil is trying to get hired by the
Federal Aviation Administration. We will
either go to Cozumel or Greece when we
take our honeymoon someday!”

‘Splurge and Steal’
The category certainly got a boost when destination weddings
became the rage in the last decade. Brides sought more sand-
friendly gowns that could billow before the ocean. Companies like
Nicole Miller and J. Crew have benefited from that trend.
From there, some brides became more attuned to ready-to-wear
looks and have embraced the high-low mentality of pairing expen-
sive, designer duds with mass-market accessories or vice versa,
says Maria Prince, vice president of Dallas-based Watters Brides.
“This is a generation of ‘splurge and steal’ buying,” Prince says.
“She’ll buy a $1,000 gown and splurge on $700 shoes that she can

As a result, the stigma of penny-pinch-
ing when it comes to wedding planning
is in freefall, say wedding experts.
“There may have been a stigma in the

Wine with dinner — where to begin?

There seems to be an infinite number
of wine choices and pairings out there,
and almost as many ways to ruin either
your guests’ meal or your budget with
the wrong selection.
Enter Gary Vaynerchuk, a video-blog-
ging wine guru (www.winelibrary.tv).
He’s here to make sure the wines at
your wedding not only satisfy your
budget but also reflect your personality.

“The best strategy is to form a rela-

new things,” he says. “As they learn your
palate and what you like, they’ll be able
to suggest new and interesting wines
that you may never have heard of and
would never have tried on your own.”

Pairing Versatility
