Suicide-prevention barriers
needed for subway: Report
The grim start to the week experienced on Torontos transit
system could be prevented in
future if council adopts a series
of suicide-prevention measures,
the citys public health department says in a new report.
Between 7 p.m. Monday and
11 a.m. Tuesday, there were
three suicide attempts, including one fatality, on the subway
system, Toronto Transit Commission spokesman Brad Ross
confirms.
The horrifying incidents
shut down parts of the subway
lines for a combined 225 minutes, causing major delays for
thousands of passengers.
Toronto Public Health, in a
new report, states that suicide
attempts and deaths on the
subway system can have serious impacts not only in terms
of morbidity and mortality,
but also in the economic cost
to transit system operations
and psychological impacts
on the driver, passengers and
witnesses.

The size of the hat seems important. Garth Brooks, the Eminem of country music, made a rare cameo appearance at the
CMAs, and Garth made sure there was no doubt about whos got
the biggest hat. His was at least 10 gallons, er, 37.8541178 litres.
My wifes theory is that it depends on how much hair they
have. Garth Brooks is follicularly challenged. Keith Urban has reliable hair even if he is from Oz.
If theres any doubt that what goes as country music today is as
grassroots as AstroTurf, every once in a while, a real country
music star wanders out onto the stage. This years Ghosts of Actual
Country Music were George Strait and Loretta Lynn. You can just
tell they didnt learn their accents at the mall. You cant fake authenticity. Youre either a coal miners daughter, or youre not. Unfortunately, the two of them are about 160 years old. Both knockin at heavens door.
Final proof that pop culture has swallowed country and spit
out the hayseeds: the inexplicable appearance of divalet Ariana
Grande, that country sensation from Boca Raton, Fla., who began
her career singing on cruise ships. Bon voyage, yall.

Anyone planning to attend Centennial Colleges art and

The focus is on each student individually, says professor

The program is offered at the colleges school of communication, media and design, which is located at the Story Arts

to nurture their artistic

or graphic designers, all
who will need to produce a portfolio to take the next step in
their career.
The portfolio development class is small, with fewer than
20 students. Each one works on a self-directed project oneon-one with an instructor, who acts as a facilitator and an
adviser. For example, a student interested in product design
might redesign a wheelchair or work on a new generation of
iPhone designs.
The foundations student body is quite diverse.
Some students are problem solvers and thinkers, while
others have no experience in art and design, Glisch says.
And we really support and guide any students who have
learning disabilities.
Another unique component is that the foundation doesnt
work in isolation; Glisch enjoys working on curriculum
development and collaborating with instructors in other
Centennial programs.
Art and design foundation studies is a one-year, two-semester certificate program. Applications are being accepted for

Volunteering is beneficial at
any stage of your life or career.
Signing up to volunteer at an

You may discover an interest you didnt know you had

like a particular line of work
as much as you thought you
