PUMPKINS

Carved pumpkins have long

been associated with Halloween
and given the holidays increasing
popularity here in the UK, our
curiosity about jack-o-lanterns
led us to discover some interesting
facts
In the late 19th century, a
sudden influx of immigrants
to the U.S helped to popularise
Halloween as a holiday about
community- particularly the Irish
whod fled the potato famine of 1846. This in turn
resulted in Halloween losing most of its religious
and superstitious overtones, leading to the holiday
becoming the secular but community centred
event we know and love today, even in the UK
where trick-or-treating and jack-o-lanterns first
originated!
In 19th century Scotland and Ireland,
Halloween guisers (known today as trick-ortreaters) commonly carried jack-o-laterns with
them made from turnips and other hard root
vegetables. These were carved with scary faces to

represent those of spirits and goblins. While some

say jack-o-lanterns were used to guide the guisers
during the night, others believe their purpose was
to ward off evil spirits during the time of year
when they were most active.
Carved pumpkins were not a popular choice
for jack-o-lanterns here but in the U.S, they were
originally associated with the harvest season
which they used to celebrate Thanksgiving.
Today, the jack-o-lantern is a popular symbol
for Halloween globally and as the spooky holiday
approaches, were sure to keep a lookout for these
carved delights!

Healing Teas

CLEAVERS
By Lily Niu

WO R D O F M O U T H M AG A Z I N E

SALES@WOMMAGA Z I N E . C O . U K

n our last issue, we covered the health benefits of

hawthorn tea. This time, we turn our focus to cleavers.
Famed for its medicinal quality, cleavers, a herb
otherwise known as groose grass or catchweed, is
primarily used as a lymphatic tonic.
When consumed as tea, cleavers natural antiinflammatory properties act as a cleansing potion of
sorts which make it perfect for treating conditions such
as arthritis and even psoriasis.
Comprised of organic acids- citric acid, gallotonic
acid, fatty acids, flavonoids, tannins and glycoside
asperuloside to name a few- cleavers is proven to
stimulate the lymphatic system and is often used to
ease discomfort from congested and swollen lymph
glands. Consequently, cleavers tea offers fact acting
relief to sufferers of tonsillitis and glandular fever.
Keen to rid your skin of acne and eczema? Cleavers
can help- its cooling effect can not only reduce itching

and redness but relieve the skin from further flare ups
with continued consumption.
With the liver function also stimulated through
drinking cleavers, youre to benefit from improved
digestion. Also packed with diuretic properties, cleavers
promotes increased urine flow (helping to swiftly
rid the body of toxins) which cleanses the bladder
and kidneys of stones and gravel as well as clearing
the urinary tract of infection. So before you reach
for a highly sugary cranberry juice to ease you of the
symptoms of a UTI, opt for a few cups of cleavers tea
instead!
To prepare cleavers tea, simply steep 2-3 teaspoon
of the herb in hot water (roughly 250ml) for 10-15
minutes. For best results, drink three or more cups a
day. With no known negative side effects, cleavers is
safe for consumption for children as well as pregnant
and nursing women.

BRIXTON

rixton has undergone huge changes over recent years

and for better or for worse, not everyones on board with
the direction this vibrant South London hub is taking.
With rising rental prices and chain businesses taking
hold, this end of the Victoria line in Zone 2 has fast
become both unrecognisable and unaffordable for its
long term residents.
Reclaim Brixton, a community organisation and antigentrification group has made headlines for protests
against property developers and landlords pushing out
locals unable to pay up and meet the costs of housing
within the area.
Now, Brixtons Club 414, one of the areas longest
running nightclubs, is set to close and be turned
into retail units and luxury flats. Lambeth council

FRESH

VS

TINNED
By Lily Niu

WO R D O F M O U T H M AG A Z I N E

SALES@WOMMAGA Z I N E . C O . U K

Eager to make the transition

from nightly takeaways to home
cooked meals? Or are you keen
to shed a few digits from your
weekly shop? The journey
to health and wellness is as
smooth as you choose to make
it but when it comes to deciding
between fresh fruit and veg versus their tinned
counterparts, how does one make the right choice?
Fresh fruit and veg come with obvious benefitsthey often taste better and depending on how
served, retain nutritional value tinned foods simply
dont have for a multitude of reasons. Cooking with
fresh fruit and veg also offers the luxury of enabling
you to create dishes from COMPLETE scratch; with
no sugar, salt, syrup or sauce standing in your way,
you can prepare and season your ingredients to any
degree you see fit.
On the other hand, theres an additional cost
to using solely fresh fruit and veg. Where you buy
your fresh produce may influence its cost and even
though a few days worth of it might not put you
out of pocket, youll only have a short space of time
in which to enjoy them. Buying fresh fruit and veg
in large quantities is rarely advised for this reason;
after all, its fresh for a reason!
With many of us driven to tinned foods exactly
because of this, the convenience element plays only
but one part in our love of Green Giant, Napolina

and the like. Stocking up in bulk is not only cheap

but easy in terms of storage and product lifespan.
Often, tinned veg such as sweetcorn, asparagus
and of course tomatoes come ready prepared,
narrowing the time it takes to get dinner from the
kitchen to our dining tables.
ure, there are instances where tinned fruit and
veg do retain their original nutritional value but
with tinned tomatoes for instance (once again),
theres concentrated tomato juice thrown into
the mix. While tomatoes and other fruit and veg
contain naturally occurring sugars, added sugars
from processed syrups, sauces and juices are
indubitably present in tinned goods.
Given that nutritional experts recommend
consuming no more than seven teaspoons of sugar
a day, the hidden sugars present in tinned goods
can fast rack up the amount you consume before
youve even had a chance to down a substantial,
delicious meal.
While the lessoned cost of tinned fruit and veg
does make a difference and its convenience cant
be denied, perhaps the road to health and wellness
needs to take a different turn- knowing what we
do now about the dangers of hidden sugars, also
present in tinned foods marketed as low fat and
healthy, cooking with fresh fruit and vegetables
allows our bodies to stay on form for much, much
longer, and who doesnt want that?

CHEAT SHEET

rom decorating your room to decking out your

flat, moving into a new place or revamping
your home for years can give you a renewed
sense of being. Were not talking spending
hundreds or even thousands of pounds at Ikea
or Habitat, were talking decluttering your
space and letting your home reflect what youd
like more of in life.
Whether its wealth, happiness or simply a
stress free year, our Feng Shui Cheat Sheet will
show you the ropes so you can get started
The premise of Feng Shui is that you can
bring harmony and balance to your life simply
by managing your immediate environmentyour home.
Firstly, declutter. In order to gain clarity and
focus, you must succeed where Confessions
of a Shopcaholics Becky Bloomwood did not
and get rid of what you no longer want or
need. The best way to do this is to ask yourself
questionsDo I love this object? How often do
I use it?
Next, fill the void with what items youve let
go of by replacing it with something you value
or enjoy. This is an effective way of ensuring
that the clutter youve rid yourself of does not
return.
Clearing the entryway of your home or
room is paramount to creating a comfortable,
welcoming environment. Ensure that shoes are
placed tidily on a shoe rack and coats, scarves
and hats hang on hooks or on a rack.
As for storage, organiser baskets with labels
work perfectly for tidying the living room and
bedroom; with only a select few useful and
sentimental items out on display. Colours of the
walls should be neutral for a calming and space
creating effect and your bed linen crisp and
fresh at all times.
By eliminating unnecessary clutter from your
home and keeping your environment calm and
tidy, you allow free flowing positive energy to
balance your life.

WHITE TEA VS
GREEN TEA
By Paula Martinac Source Livestrong.com

20

WO R D O F M O U T H M AG A Z I N E

SALES@WOMMAGA Z I N E . C O . U K

Like their close cousin, black tea, both white tea

and green tea come from the leaves of the Camellia
sinensis plant. The colors of the leaves reflect
the amount of wilting and oxidation they have
undergone. Both white and green teas contain
copious amounts of polyphenols -- antioxidant
plant compounds with proven health benefits. More
scientific research has been done on green tea than
white, but one preliminary study suggests that white
tea may have an edge in terms of cancer protection.
TEA OVERVIEW

Green tea is produced from leaves that have not withered or oxidized,
while white tea comes from young leaves and buds. White tea is the least
processed of all teas, and has a sweeter, milder flavor than green. The
National Cancer Institute reports that both white and green teas contain
about the same amount of catechins, a specific type of polyphenol. These
natural plant compounds appear to have numerous benefits for health.

GREEN TEA BENEFITS

The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that green tea may
help stop the growth of cancer cells in many varieties of the disease,
including breast, esophageal, prostate and stomach. UMMC notes that
green tea has also shown positive results in preventing atherosclerosis
and high cholesterol, both of which can lead to heart disease. It also
may promote thermogenesis, a fat-burning process that contributes to
successful weight loss. A report published in the Journal of Indian Society
of Periodontology in 2012 found that green tea may even promote good
dental health by reducing inflammation and bacteria associated with gum
disease.

WHITE TEA BENEFITS

When it comes to cancer prevention, white tea may have an advantage

over green. Researchers at the Linus Pauling Institute in 2000 tested
four kinds of white tea on rats to assess their benefits for colon cancer
protection. Because of white teas higher content of some polyphenols, the
scientists found it was better than green at mitigating harm done to DNA
-- a type of cell damage that can be a precursor to cancer. However, the
researchers cautioned that additional studies would be needed to confirm
the same benefits in humans.

TEA DRINKING CONSIDERATIONS

Both green tea and white tea have less caffeine than black tea or coffee.
White tea contains the least, with 30 to 55 milligrams per cup, compared
to 35 to 70 for green tea. A study published in Molecular Nutrition and
Food Research in 2007 found that adding lemon or soy or rice milk to
green tea significantly boosted the bodys absorption of its antioxidants.
The National Cancer Institute advises that hot brewed tea has greater
concentrations of polyphenols than iced or bottled varieties. Talk to your
doctor before adding green or white tea to your diet because they may
interfere with some medications

How to choose

HIGH-QUALITY

EGGS

Credit: Mercola.com

ree-range or pastured organic eggs are far

superior when it comes to nutrient content, while
conventionally raised eggs are far more likely to be
contaminated with disease-causing bacteria such as
salmonella. This is why, if youre eating raw eggs,
they MUST be organic pastured eggs.
An egg is considered organic if the chicken was
only fed organic food, which means it will not have
accumulated high levels of pesticides from the grains
(mostly GM corn) fed to typical chickens. Ideally, the
chicken should have access to the outdoors where it
can consume its natural diet. Testing has confirmed
that true free-range eggs are far more nutritious
than commercially raised eggs and contained.
2/3 TIMES MORE VITAMIN A
2 times more omega-3 fatty acids
3 times more vitamin E
7 times more beta-carotene

The dramatically superior nutrient levels are most

likely the result of the differences in diet between
free-ranging, pastured hens and commercially
farmed hens. If youre purchasing your eggs from
a supermarket, be aware that labels can be very
deceptive. The definitions of free-range are such
that the commercial egg industry can run industrial
farm egg-laying facilities and still call them freerange eggs, despite the fact that the birds foraging
conditions are far from what youd call natural.
For example, regulations on the use of the term
free-range do not specify the amount of time the
24

WO R D O F M O U T H M AG A Z I N E

SALES@WOMMAGA Z I N E . C O . U K

hens must spend outdoors or the amount of outdoor

space each hen must have access to. Nor do they
indicate that the hen must have access to a pasture
diet. True free-range eggs, now increasingly referred
to as pasture-raised, are from hens that roam
freely outdoors on a pasture where they can forage
for their natural diet, which includes seeds, green
plants, insects, and worms.
Large commercial egg facilities typically house
tens of thousands of hens and can even go up to
hundreds of thousands of hens. Obviously, they
cannot allow all of them to forage freely. They can
still be called cage-free or free-range though, if
theyre not confined to an individual cage. But these
labels say nothing about the conditions they ARE
raised in, which are still deplorable.
TRY BUYING YOUR EGGS LOCALLY
The key to finding truly free-range, pastured eggs
is to buy your eggs locally. This is typically even
preferable to organic eggs from the grocery store. If
you live in an urban area, visiting the local health
food stores is typically the quickest route to finding
the high-quality local egg sources.
Farmers markets and food coops are another great
way to meet the people who produce your food.
With face-to-face contact, you can get your questions
answered and know exactly what youre buying.
Better yet, visit the farm -- ask for a tour. If they have
nothing to hide, they should be eager to show you
their operation.

POWERFUL TIPS TO

COMPLETELY BANISH

SUGAR CRAVINGS

FOR EV ER

COCONUT OIL

Coconut oil is incredible at destroying sugar cravings. And all

you have to do is have one tablespoon of this delicious oil and
youre set! Coconut oil is made up of medium-chain fatty acids,
or medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). As soon as you consume
them your body sends them straight to your liver to use as energy.
In doing this, coconut oil gives you an energy hit that is exactly
like sugar and other carbs.
However, and this is the best bit, it doesnt cause an insulin
spike in your bloodstream, meaning that it doesnt put you into
that blood-sugar spiral!

BIGGER BREKKIE

And on the subject of the blood sugar spiral

One of the reasons why most people struggle with sugar
cravings throughout the day (think mid-morning, mid
afternoonafter big mealsetc) is because they start the day
wrong! Not having a solid breakfast instantly puts you in a blood
sugar catastrophe!
Sugar cravings are way more in control and easy to avoid if
you dont let your blood sugar spike and then dip too low.
Having a breakfast containing fats and protein is a great idea.

DONT BE AFRAID OF SALT!

Its not always the bad guy its cracked up to be. Remember when we thought
all fat was bad? And then researchers started showing us that there were
good fats and bad fats, and the same is now happening with salt.
According to Robert Young of the pH Miracle Research Centre, what seems
like a sugar craving could often be your bodys cry for healthy salts.
Remember, healthy mineral salts such as magnesium, potassium, calcium
and sodium bicarbonates are vital to the bodys functioning. Without them
we suffer.
Put this to the test, its really easy: next time you have a craving for sugar
or carbs, simply have half a teaspoon of pure sodium bicarbonate in 300ml
of water.
See how the sugar craving simply evaporates. Its magic!

USE CINNAMON TO SWEETEN

This one is especially useful with breakfasts, and especially if

youre creating your own health and alkaline cereals or having
breakfasts like quinoa or organic oats.
In fact, even if youre just having a nice glass of almond milk
this one is a winner.
Use cinnamon to sweeten!
Numerous show that cinnamon regulates blood sugar, meaning
its perfect for maintaining stable energy levels and moods.
PLUS its alkaline, anti-viral, fantastic for colon health, helps
prevent blood clotting and is great for controlling cholesterol.
Whenever youd think of needing a sweetener of some sort, try
cinnamon instead!

GET ENOUGH
SLEEP!

Sleep deprivation severely

a f fect s your appet ite
hormones. Fact. According
to the amazing Dr Mark
Hyman You literally can
sleep your cravings and your
weight away.
In hu m a n st ud ies,
depriving college students of just two hours
of the recommended eight hours of sleep
led to a rise in hunger hormones, a decrease
in appetite-suppressing hormones and big
cravings for sugar and refined carbs.
It makes sense. If you dont sleep your body
defaults to its easiest most frequently known
energy sources i.e. quickly absorbed sugars.
An additional study found that when
subjects were sleep-deprived, their reward
activation centers in the brain were actually
greater, thereby making it more difficult to
say no to sugary treats. The bottom line? Get
more sleep

Having blood-sugar dips and spikes, sudden huger, feeling tired, irritable and famished
these are all symptoms of sugar addiction and all lead to high sugar intake.
While youre working on the sugar habit, a key ally is having healthy snacks available.
When you have healthy snacks within reach, 24/7, your chances of beating the sugar
addiction go up massively.
Just think about the last 5 snacks you bought from the shops when you were running on
empty. Shop bought snacks are almost ALWAYS filled with sugar.

So get moving, get breathing

and get sweating it will ward
off the cravings and make you
look and feel amazing!

EXERCISE

I know, I know. You didnt want me to bring this one up. Getting more sleep? Easy! Thanks
Ross! Getting more excercise?! Noooo. The fact of it is, it can be simple, easy exercise it
doesnt have to be 60-minutes of crossfit every day (although it can be if you like!).
Just getting moving and getting the blood pumping, oxygen flowing and lymph stimulated
is whats important. If youre starting from scratch, it can be something really simple like
walking or light jogging (or rebounding if you have a rebounder!) but make it something
you can do every day even if only for ten minutes.
Anyone who exercises on a regular basis will know that cardiovascular exercise is one of
the best cures for food cravings.
It always amazes me how my appetite, especially for sweets, dramatically decreases after
a good workout.
After exercise there is a dramatic reduction in insulin levels and raised insulin levels are
a big contributor to sugar and carb cravings.
So get moving, get breathing and get sweating it will ward off the cravings and make
you look and feel amazing!

STAY HYDRATED

Dehydration is a leading cause of both sugar and carb cravings.

When youre dehydrated your body gets depleted of necessary minerals and nutrients
and your body will start to crave anything and everything to replenish them.
This often leads to sugary snack binging.
As youll know if youre a regular reader of my blog: you should be aiming for between
2-4 litres of good quality (preferably alkaline water).
While that might sound like a lot to begin with, start small. Just aim for 2 litres to
begin with and build up from there.
Of course, black tea (with or without milk), coffee, alcohol etc are dehydrating and
juices, cola etcwell, well get onto that in just a minute.
Try swapping your black tea and coffee for herbal tea (here are some of my favourite
alkaline herbal teas) and this will easily contribute a litre or more of your hydration
intake (if you have 3 cups per day).
And if you want some yummy ways to make your water more tasty, here is my guide
to Making Water Delicious (contains five or six delicious recipes).
See how the sugar craving simply evaporates. Its magic!

GET RID OF
LIQUID SUGARS

Any form of liquid sugar is worse than solid

food.
Sugar without the fibre and bulk is far more
detrimental to the body, hits harder and
more directly on your liver and it turns of
the fat storing process in your liver, leading
directly to fat gain.
When you drink sugars (including fructose,
in fact, fructose is absolutely the very worst
type of sugar you can consume, especially
when you drink it) without the fibre, your
brain is not sent the message that the calories
have been consumed.
Your body literally does not register those
calories. As a result of this you stay hungry
and crave more sugar.
This includes sodas, juices (ANY juice
containing ANY fruit), alcohol, sports drinks,
sweetened tea and coffee etc.
This is why I am so adamant about having
NO fruit in my green juices or smoothies.
When you consume liquid sugars (and more
on fructose below) you dont feel full, so you
eat more all day and you crave more sugar
and carbs.
I could spend all day talking about the
dangers of consuming soda, but thats for
another day.
Put simply you have to cut soda and liquid
sugars (and sweeteners) from your life if you
ever want to get to your true health potential.

DONT O.D. ON FRUIT

I know there is a lot of debate about fruit, fructose

and how much fruit is healthy.
Im going to very briefly give you my beliefs here
and an explanation, but ultimately you have to do what
works for you.
Fruit is not alkaline-forming (generally). There are
some exceptions, and these are all of the very, very low
sugar fruits (lemons, limes, avocado, tomato, grapefruit
etc).
The reason why these are alkaline forming is because
they contain all of the alkaline minerals that most fruits
do, but almost no fructose.
(Explanation as to why lemons and limes are alkaline
forming here).
As mentioned above, when you consume fructose
without the fibre (i.e. when you juice it, or drink a
shop-bought juice) it goes straight to the liver, causes
massive blood-sugar spiking and turns on the fat storing
mechanism in the liver.
Without the fibre, the brain does not register the
calories from this as being consumed and therefore you
still remain just as hungry as before, and still have the
sugar craving.
Fructose has been manipulated by the food industry
over many years to be seen as the healthy sugar, but in
reality is simply isnt.
However, fructose in a fresh, in-season piece of fruit
is different to fructose in juices (fresh or bought) and is
certainly different to High-Fructose-Corn-Syrup.
BUT, I personally recommend keeping fruit intake
down to one piece of in-season fruit per day (maximum
two).
Mercola (who has done more research on fruit and
fructose than perhaps anyone!) recommends keeping
fructose intake under 15g per day as an absolute
maximum.
And considering 1 medium banana on average would
have around 7-8g of fructose, you can see how you can
easily overdose!

IF YOURE STRUGGLING WITH SUGAR

CRAVINGS, BUT EATING A LOT OF FRUIT,
I RECOMMEND LOOKING INTO THIS.
