Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1986
Pauillac
u: into neck
The 1986 possesses outstanding richness,
a deep color, medium body, a graceful,
harmonious texture, and superb length. The
penetrating fragrance of cedar, chestnuts,
minerals, and rich fruit is a hallmark of this
wine. Powerful, dense, rich, and tannic, as
well as medium to full-bodied, with awesome
extraction of fruit, this Lafite has immense
potential. Patience is required. Anticipated
maturity: 2000-2030. R. Parker for TWA, 100

Chateau Margaux 1990
Margaux, 1er Cru Classe
u: five into neck, one bottom neck
I had this wine both in Seoul, Korea in
February, and from my cellar in December,
2008, and it was remarkable how identical
the wines smelled and tasted. It offers an
extraordinary aromatic display of spring
flowers, camphor, sweet red and black fruits,
a hint of licorice, and no evidence of its 100%
new oak cask aging. Round and generous
with low acidity, but an opulent, full-bodied
richness that is fresh with laser-like precision,
this stunning wine is just beginning to reach its
plateau of full maturity, where it should remain
for another three decades. A sensational
effort, it is one of the legendary wines made
at Chateau Margaux. R. Parker for TWA, 100

3
Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1982
Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe
u: bottom neck
This wine remains one of the legends of
Bordeaux. It has thrown off the backward,
youthful style that existed during its first
25 years of life, and over the last 4-5 years
has developed such secondary nuances as
cedar and spice box. The creme de cassis,
underlying floral note, full-bodied power,
extraordinary purity, multilayered texture, and
finish of over a minute are a showcase for
what this Chateau accomplished in 1982. The
wine is still amazingly youthful, vibrant, and
pure. It appears capable of remaining fruity
and vibrant in 2082! Thank God it is beginning
to budge, as I would like to drink most of my
supply before I kick the bucket. This is a great,
still youthful wine, and, on occasion, one
does understand the hierarchy of Bordeaux
chateaux when you see the complexity and
brilliance of this first-growth. Anticipated
maturity: 2015-2050+. R. Parker for TWA,

Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1986
Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe
u: very top shoulder, very slightly protruding
corks, lightly scuffed label
Deep garnet-black colour. An incredible array
of aromas on the nose: blackberry, black
cherry, tobacco, espresso, leather, black olive
and loam. The palate is absolutely seamless
from first impression to finish, effortlessly
building layers of complexity in the mouth and
leading to a very long, earth and spice finish. I
cant see how this could possibly be improved
so have no alternative but concede perfection.
Drink now to 2045+. L. Perrotti-Brown for

7
Chateau Gruaud Larose 1982
St. Julien, 2eme Cru Classe
u: into neck
A massive wine that is clearly of first-growth
quality in this vintage, the 1982 Gruaud Larose
remains a youngster. A broodingly dense,
thick, unctuously textured, inky/plum/garnet/
purple color offers up scents of beef blood,
steak tartare, cassis, herbs, tobacco, and
underbrush. One of the most concentrated
wines of the vintage (as well as one of the
most concentrated Bordeauxs I have ever
tasted), it is a huge, full-bodied, weighty, rich
wine whose tannins are getting silkier and
silkier. It appears set for another 30-40 years
of life. This behemoth is a singularly profound
example of Gruaud Larose that continues
to justify its legendary status. Anticipated
maturity: now-2050. R. Parker for TWA, 98

Chateau Gruaud Larose 1986
St. Julien, 2eme Cru Classe
u: into neck, lightly worn capsules
Still tasting as if it were only 7-8 years
of age, the dense, garnet/purple-colored
1986 Gruaud-Larose is evolving at a
glacier pace. The wine still has mammoth
structure, tremendous reserves of fruit and
concentration, and a finish that lasts close to a
minute. The wine is massive, very impressively
constituted, with still some mouth-searing
tannin to shed. Decanting of one to two
hours in advance seems to soften it a bit,
but this is a wine that seems to be almost
immortal in terms of its longevity. It is a great
Medoc classic, and certainly one of the most
magnificent Gruaud-Larose ever made. R.

Chateau Montrose 1990
St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe
u: into neck
The final blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon,
32% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc was
harvested between September 14 and
October 3. The spring was cold, yet summer
was extremely hot and dryone of the hottest
vintages since 1949. The fact that virtually no
rain fell in September served as a catalyst to
get all the grapes ripe and in cellars. Some
bottles of this wine have a definite brett
population that gives off the notes of sweaty
horses, but this one did not. The ones I have
had from my cellarwhere I have had it
frequentlyare quite pure and clean. I suspect
that the brett population is in all of them, but
unless the wine hits some heat along the
transportation route or in storage, the wine
will not show any brett. This one tasted at the
chateau, as well as those Ive had from my
cellar, have been pristine and not showing the
sweaty horse notes that can be in evidence
in brett populations that have flourished in
the bottle because of external temperatures.
This wine has an incredibly complex nose of
spring flowers, blackberry and cassis liqueur,
scorched earth and barbecue spice. It is fullbodied, majestic and opulent, with low acidity
and fabulous fruit. It is close to full maturity.
The wine should continue to drink well for
at least another 30 or more years, but it is
showing secondary nuances in the perfume.
The wine is absolutely magnificent, broad,
savory and mouth-filling. This is one of the alltime modern legends from Bordeaux as well
as Chateau Montrose. R. Parker for TWA,

Chateau Pichon Longueville Baron 1990
Pauillac, 2eme Cru Classe
u: into neck
A remarkable vintage for Pichon Longueville
Baron, 1990 is one of this estates two or three
finest wines made in the last 40 years. Still
inky/blue/purple-tinged to the rim, it reveals an
extraordinary bouquet of charcoal, incense,
creme de cassis, blue and black fruits, and
a hint of licorice as well as an impressively
long finish. While drinkable, its evolution is
extremely slow, and I would not be surprised
to see it last another two decades or more.

Chateau Pichon Longueville Baron 2000
Pauillac, 2eme Cru Classe
This is one of the great wines of the vintage,
and certainly a candidate for one of the
finest wines made at this estate under
the management of Christian Seeley and
proprietor AXA. Showing incredibly well at
two tastings of 2000s, the wine has a dense
bluish/purple color and a beautiful nose of
incense, melted asphalt, and creme de cassis
as well as hints of new saddle leather and
licorice. It is superbly concentrated and very
pure, with excellent texture and opulence.
The acidity seems low, the tannin high but
well-integrated. This is a compelling 2000 that
is just closing in on its window of maturity and
should stay there for at least 20 or more years.

The more serious grand vin twin, the 2005

blackcurrant and blue/black fruits galore,
and an impressively opaque dark plum/
purple color. With a rich, concentrated and
pure mouthfeel, wonderfully sweet tannin,
full-bodied density and richness, but elegance

Chateau Malescot St. Exupery 2005
Margaux, 3eme Cru Classe
A beautiful wine, once again, from this
property that has been on a superb qualitative
roll for several decades. Dense ruby/purple
with notes of graphite, background oak,
youthful crme de cassis and blackberry fruit
as well as a floral underpinning, it is medium

35
Chateau Lynch Bages 1989
Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe
u: into neck
The 1989 has taken forever to shed its
formidable tannins, but what a great vintage
of Lynch Bages! I would rank it at the top of
the pyramid although the 1990, 2000, and
down the road, some of the more recent
vintages such as 2005, 2009 and 2010
should come close to matching the 1989s
extraordinary concentration and undeniable
aging potential. Its dense purple color reveals
a slight lightening at the edge and the stunning
bouquet offers classic notes of creme de
cassis, subtle smoke, oak and graphite.
Powerful and rich with some tannins still to
shed at age 22, it is still a young adolescent
in terms of its evolution and will benefit from
another 4-5 years of cellaring. It should prove
to be a 50 year wine. R. Parker for TWA, 99+

Chateau Lynch Bages 1990
Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe

This magnificent Lynch Bages has been
drinking well since the day it was released and
it continues to go from strength to strength.
The biggest, richest, fullest-bodied Lynch
Bages until the 2000, the fully mature 1990
exhibits an unbelievably explosive nose of
black currants, cedarwood, herbs and spice.
The majestic, classically Bordeaux aromatics
are followed by a full-bodied, voluptuously
textured, rich, intense wine with superb purity
as well as thrilling levels of fruit, glycerin and
sweetness. This beauty should continue to

Beginning to open magnificently, the

tannins that have resolved themselves

is still an adolescent, but it exhibits admirable
purity, texture, mouthfeel and power combined

Possibly the youngest wine of all the 2005
Mdocs in terms of its evolution, at age 10
the inky purple 2005 Pontet-Canet tastes
more like a two-year-old wine. Loads of
pure blueberry, blackberry and cassis fruit
are present along with a hint of licorice and
background oak. It is full-bodied, ripe, and
excruciatingly fresh, vigorous and exuberant.
This is a tour de force, and a sensational effort
that rivals the first growths. Give it another

Chateau Pontet Canet 2006
Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe
The 2006 is a wine to stockpile, especially
for those in their thirties and forties as it
needs another decade to reach maturity,
after which it should keep for 30+ years. This
vineyard, just south of Mouton Rothschild,
has produced an opaque bluish/purplecolored 2006 with an extraordinarily pure
nose of graphite, charcoal, sweet creme
de cassis, and a hint of scorched earth.
Incredible concentration, stunning richness,
and a 60-second finish result in a wine that
transcends the vintage as well as this estates
1855 classification. This enormously endowed,
modern day classic is a legend in the making.

Chapoutier Ermitage Blanc De LOree 1996
Northern Rhone
It is no secret that I adore Chapoutiers luxury
cuvee of white Hermitage called Cuvee LOree.
Made from 90-year old vines and microscopic
yields of 10-12 hectoliters per hectare, this
wine flirts with perfection. It is a compelling
white Hermitage. Made from 100% Marsanne,
it is as rich and multidimensional as the fullest,
most massive Montrachet money can buy.
It is unctuously textured, yet extraordinarily
and beautifully balanced. I suspect it will drink
well early in life, and then shut down for a
few years. It should last for 4-5 decades. The
1996 possesses some of the most amazing
glycerin levels I have ever seen in a dry white
wine. In short, this wine must be tasted to be
believed. R. Parker for TWA, 99 pts. 02/99

An amazing wine in every sense, this classic,
full-bodied Pauillac is the quintessential
Pontet Canet from proprietor Alfred Tesseron,
who continues to reduce yields and farms
his vineyards biodynamically a rarity in
Bordeaux. Black as a moonless night, the
2009 Pontet Canet offers up notes of incense,
graphite, smoke, licorice, creme de cassis
and blackberries. A wine of irrefutable purity,
laser-like precision, colossal weight and
richness, and sensational freshness, this is a
tour de force in winemaking that is capable
of lasting 50 or more years. The tannins are
elevated, but they are sweet and beautifully
integrated as are the acidity, wood and alcohol
(which must be in excess of 14%). This
vineyard, which is situated on the high plateau
of Pauillac adjacent to Mouton Rothschild,
appears to have done everything perfectly
in 2009. This cuvee should shut down in
the cellar and re-open in a decade or more.
Anticipated maturity: 2025-2075. R. Parker

Chateau Pontet Canet 2010
Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe
An absolutely amazing wine, from grapes
harvested between the end of September
and October 17, this blend of 65% Cabernet
Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the rest Cabernet
Franc and Petit Verdot has close to 15%
natural alcohol. It comes from one of the few
biodynamic vineyards in Bordeaux, but you
are likely to see many more, given the success
that Tesseron seems to be having at all levels,
both in his vineyards and in his fermentation/
winemaking. An astounding, compelling wine
with the classic Pauillac nose more often
associated with its cross-street neighbor,
Mouton-Rothschild, creme de cassis, there
are also some violets and other assorted
floral notes. The wine has off-the-charts
massiveness and intensity but never comes
across as heavy, overbearing or astringent.
The freshness, laser-like precision, and fullbodied, massive richness and extract are
simply remarkable to behold and experience.
It is very easy, to become jaded tasting such
great wines from a great vintage, but it is really
a privilege to taste something as amazing as
this. Unfortunately, it needs a good decade of
cellaring, and thats assuming it doesnt close
down over the next few years. This is a 50- to
75-year wine from one of the half-dozen or so
most compulsive and obsessive proprietors
in all of Bordeaux. Is there anything that
proprietor Alfred Tesseron is not doing right?
Talk about an estate that is on top of its game!
Pontet-Canets 2010 is a more structured,
tannic and restrained version of their most
recent perfect wine, the 2009. Kudos to
Pontet-Canet! R. Parker for TWA, 100 pts.

A beautifully elegant and highly complex
nose of extract of dark berry fruit that is both
elegant and complex serves as a dramatic
introduction to the big-bodied, indeed even
robust flavors that are firm, dense and
incredibly concentrated, all wrapped in a
palate drenching finish that just oozes dry
extract and gives a velvety texture to the
unbelievably long finale. This is a wonderfully
gifted wine that has everything it needs to age
gracefully for multiple decades and it will need
12 to 15 years in a cool cellar to really hit its
stride. This too is one of those wow wines.

This is pretty much spot on with my last
review in 2012 save for the fact that its
evolving a bit more slowly and I have extended
the suggested initial drinking window
accordingly. That review is: Almost invisible
wood frames the pretty and impressively
complex nose of dried flower, citrus zest,
mineral reduction and tidal pool aromas. The
well-concentrated mid-palate is quite round
and supple though the focus is maintained as
there is an underlying firm spine of acidity on
the superbly intense and strikingly persistent
finish. As it often is when young, this is really
quite serious and it will require a few years to
unwind and reveal all of its potential but make
no mistake, this is going to be great in time.

Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape 2010
Southern Rhone
Interestingly enough, even though many of
the 2010 Perrin et Fils selections from the
southern Rhone were scheduled to be bottled
right after my visit, the 2010 Beaucastel had
already been put in bottle. This is a gorgeous
wine, a classic blend of 30% Grenache, 30%
Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise and
the balance the other permitted varietals in
the appellation. Deep purple, with loads of
bouquet garni, beef blood, blackberry, kirsch,
smoke and truffle, this wine is full-bodied, rich
and showing even better than it did last year.
I still think it needs 3-5 years of cellaring, and
it should last for 25-30 years, as most of the
top vintages of Beaucastel do. R. Parker for

St. Julien, 2eme Cru Classe
Along with the Medoc first growths, Leoville
Barton, Chateau Montrose, Sociando Mallet,
and a handful of other producers, Leoville Las
Cases continues to make a wine meant for
very long-term cellaring. When I did my earlier
tastings of the 2000, my projected maturity
dates were 2012-2040, but it is looking
more like 2020-2050. This full-bodied blend
of nearly 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.4%
Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc still has a
youthful ruby/purple color, notes of graphite,
kirsch liqueur, black currants, and lead pencil
shavings, with good acidity, the tell-tale purity,
layered ripeness and intensity, and a profound
finish. However, with its high level of tannin
and brooding backwardness, this superb effort
needs to be forgotten for up to a decade. R.

Sine Qua Non Atlantis Fe 203-1a 2005
California
The perfect 2005 Syrah Atlantis Fe
203-1a,b,c is a blend of 93% Syrah, 5%
Grenache, and 2% Viognier, with 25% whole
clusters. Whereas the Ode to E is all from the
Eleven Confessions Vineyard, this cuvee is a
combination of 43% from the estate vineyard,
28% from the White Hawk Vineyard, 21%
from the Alban Vineyard, and 8% from the
Bien Nacido Vineyard. The good news is
there are nearly 1,500 cases of this recently
released offering. An extraordinarily flowery
nose interwoven with scents of blueberries,
blackberries, incense, and graphite soars from
the glass. Although not the biggest or most
concentrated Syrah Krankl has made, it is one
of the most nuanced, elegant, and complex.
It remains full-bodied, but builds incrementally
on the palate, and comes across as elegant
and delicate, especially when compared to
many California Syrahs. Nevertheless, the
intensity is mind-boggling, and the finish lasts
for nearly a minute. Drink this amazing effort

grown in the White Hawk Vineyard in Los

even better out of bottle than it did from barrel.
An opaque purple color is accompanied by
beautiful notes of charcoal, acacia flowers,
blueberries, blackberries, graphite, and subtle

The 2009 Grenache Upside Down emerges
from the glass with layers of dark red fruit as
it sweeps across the palate. There is an inner
sweetness and sheer depth that make the
2009 compelling. The 11% Syrah and 5%

Tar, anise and graphite meld together on
the rich, dramatic finish. This is a striking
wine endowed with tons of pure textural

Grenache 2010 (3 bts)

The 2010 Syrah Stockholm Syndrome is
a monumental effort that will stand toe-totoe with the greatest Syrahs in the world.
A blend of 96% Syrah, 3% Roussanne and
1% Viognier, it was fermented with 16%
whole cluster before spending just under 42
months in 100% new French oak. It offers an
incredible array of sweet dark fruits, cassis,
white chocolate, licorice and hints of bacon
fat that meld perfectly with its full-bodied,
seamless, layered and impeccably puttogether palate. Given the wealth of fruit here,
its amazing how this stays light, graceful and
elegant, without ever seeming over the top in

here, theyre sweet and integrated, so feel free

The current release of the estate vineyard
(a.k.a. the extended barrel-aged cuvee), the
2010 Grenache Stockholm Syndrome is an
incredible effort that I couldnt find a fault
with. A blend of 75% Grenache, 22% Syrah,
2% Roussanne and 1% Viognier, all from
the Eleven Confession Vineyard, it spent just
under 30 months in 22% new and 78% used
French oak prior to bottling. Locked and
loaded, it knocks it out of the park with its
cassis, licorice, smoked duck, spice-box and
exotic herb-styled bouquet. The palate follows
suit and while it has the expected depth and
richness of the estate, its seamless, elegant
and lively, with perfect balance, ultra-fine
tannin and a finish that just wont quit. It

17% whole clusters and aged in equal parts
new and used French oak. One of the shining
successes in the vintage, its a full-bodied,
concentrated and layered Syrah that has
awesome aromatics of blackcurrants, Peking
duck, pepper, licorice and charcuterie in
its seamless, thrillingly pure profile. As with
Manfreds other 2011s, the tannins are

in the vintage. A blend of 75% Grenache,
12.5% Syrah, 11.5% Mourvedre and a splash

with notions of black raspberry, cassis, dried

Domaine Pegau Cuvee da Capo 2007
Southern Rhone
For the fourth time, the Chateauneuf du Pape
Cuvee da Capo has been produced, and
for the fourth time, it has received a perfect
score although I might back off the 2000s
perfect score based on the fact that it seems
to be more of an upper-ninety point wine than
pure perfection these days. The 2007 may
come closest in style to the 1998, the debut
vintage, although the tannins are sweeter
and the wine is perhaps fatter and richer in
the mouth. The alcohols in these cuvees can
be very high, ranging from 16.1% in 2003,
15.8% in 2000, 16.3% in 1998, to 15.5% (the
lowest ever) in 2007. An inky/purple color is
followed by aromas of smoked meats, Peking
duck, licorice, lavender, aged beef, grilled
steak blood, black currants, plums, sauteed
cepes and soy. Enormously concentrated,
broad, expansive and massive but not over
the top, this is a tour de force in winemaking
that is impossible to imagine unless one has
a bottle to work through over the course of
4 to 5 hours. Although they advertise using
all 13 authorized varietals, this wine is over
90% Grenache, largely from the famed La
Crau section of Chateauneuf du Pape. They
do have other vineyards from which they pull
some of the fruit that goes into the Cuvee
da Capo, including St.-Jean, Esquilons and
occasionally Monpertuis. The 2007 seems to
be broader, fatter, more unctuously textured
and more flattering to drink at this stage than
the 1998 was. In that sense, the evolutionary
development may resemble their 2003s. The
2007 was bottled in February, 2010, and my
anticipated drinking dates are 2014-2030+.

I grossly underestimated the 2000 Ermitage
lErmite from barrel. This wine, which emerges
from largely pre-phylloxera vines planted
on the dome of Hermitage, adjacent to the
chapel that is perched there so photogenically,
possesses extraordinary finesse and elegance.
It reveals notes of liquid minerals intermixed
with kirsch liqueur and blackberries. While
it never possesses the power and breadth
of flavor of Le Meal or Le Pavillon, lErmite
appears to be a hypothetical blend of

Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape 2007

damp-stained labels
Paul Avril was a bigger-than-life vigneron, a
visionary, and a great teacher, but Vincent has
been in charge for a number of years, and he
has rewarded his father with what I believe is
the greatest Chateauneuf du Pape made since
1978 and 1990, the 2007. I have not only
tasted this wine at the estate, but I purchased
it for my cellar, and have now drunk it on
three separate occasions out of bottle. It is
unquestionably one of the great Chateauneufs
of my lifetime, and I suspect it will merit a three
digit score after another 3-4 years of cellaring.
The blend is generally 65% Grenache, 20%
Mourvedre, and the rest small amounts of
Muscardin, Vaccarese, Counoise, and Syrah.
It exhibits what is probably the deepest
color I have ever seen here, and the finished
alcohol is a high (for Clos des Papes) 15.5%.
Still slightly restrained because of its recent
bottling, but wow, what potential complexity,
mind-boggling richness, and compelling flavor
profile are apparent. It is a sublime expression
of the art of winemaking as evidenced by
its dense purple color and big, sweet kiss
of kirsch, framboise, blackberries, licorice,
roasted herbs, and smoked meat. It hits
the palate with a fascinating combination
of substance, power, full-bodied authority
yet extraordinary freshness, elegance, and
precision. Give it 3-4 years of cellaring,
and watch it unleash its glory over the next
three decades. This is a prodigious wine of

backed by energy and momentum. Wait a few
moments and dried herbs, rosemary and mint
rise from the glass. It shows a silky, elongated

long persistency. Given how well this wine

Chateau Montrose 2009
St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe
The final blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon,
32% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc was
harvested between September 14 and
October 3. The spring was cold, yet summer
was extremely hot and dryone of the hottest
vintages since 1949. The fact that virtually no
rain fell in September served as a catalyst to
get all the grapes ripe and in cellars. Some
bottles of this wine have a definite brett
population that gives off the notes of sweaty
horses, but this one did not. The ones I have
had from my cellarwhere I have had it
frequentlyare quite pure and clean. I suspect
that the brett population is in all of them, but
unless the wine hits some heat along the
transportation route or in storage, the wine
will not show any brett. This one tasted at the
chateau, as well as those Ive had from my
cellar, have been pristine and not showing the
sweaty horse notes that can be in evidence
in brett populations that have flourished in
the bottle because of external temperatures.
This wine has an incredibly complex nose of
spring flowers, blackberry and cassis liqueur,
scorched earth and barbecue spice. It is fullbodied, majestic and opulent, with low acidity
and fabulous fruit. It is close to full maturity.

The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Melbury,

full maturity, the wine has an extraordinary
aromatic profile of smoky meats intermixed
with blackberry, creme de cassis, charcoal,
lead pencil shavings and espresso. Dense,
opulent and full-bodied, with terrific fruit, this

such great ripeness and massive intensity.
This extraordinary effort displays oodles of
glycerin and fabulous purity, while the oak has

Harlan Estate Proprietary Red 1997
Napa
The 1997 Harlan Estate is one of the
greatest Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines I
have ever tasted. A blend of 80% Cabernet
Sauvignon, with the rest Merlot and Cabernet
Franc, this enormously-endowed, profoundly
rich wine must be tasted to be believed.
Opaque purple-colored, it boasts spectacular,
soaring aromatics of vanilla, minerals, coffee,
blackberries, licorice, and cassis. In the
mouth, layer after layer unfold powerfully yet
gently. Acidity, tannin, and alcohol are wellbalanced by the wines unreal richness and
singular personality. The finish exceeds one
minute. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2030. R.

Chateau Clinet 2011
Pomerol
Clinet has produced a blockbuster wine, even
in the lighter, less consistent vintage of 2011.
It reveals a dense purple color as well as an
abundance of black cherry, black currant
and blackberry fruit intermixed with licorice,
incense and a touch of camphor. Full-bodied,
opulent and fleshy with a substantial finish,
this showy, dramatic 2011 should drink well
for 15-20 years. Brilliant! R. Parker for TWA,

Cote de Nuits
A very pretty nose of discreet spice notes,
red currants and damp earth nuances
that continue onto the rich, powerful and
impressively concentrated medium-bodied
flavors blessed with an abundance of dry
extract that buffers the notably firm, mineraldriven and wonderfully complex finish that
seems to go on and on. This is terrific and one
of the best vintages that I have ever seen for
this wine. Burghound, (91-94) pts. 01/11

Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1982
Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe
u: one very top shoulder, one top shoulder,
one lightly torn capsule removed and replaced
by Skinner specialists to reveal fully branded
cork
This is a denser version of the 1990 that
stylistically reminds me of what the young
1959 probably tasted like. Still backward with
a deep ruby/plum color revealing only a touch
of lightening at the edge, the wine offers up
an extraordinary nose of caramelized herbs,
smoke, cedar, pen ink, black currants, and
earth. The gorgeous aromatics are followed by
a full-bodied, plump, rich, fleshy wine with low
acidity. With 6-8 hours decanting in a closed
decanter, it will offer beautiful drinking, but it
needs another 5-8 years to reach full maturity.
It is capable of lasting 50-60 years. This
classic Lafite is not as fat and concentrated
as the 1982 Latour, nor as complex or
concentrated as the 1982 Mouton Rothschild,
but it is a winner all the same. R. Parker for

Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1986
Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe
The 1986 possesses outstanding richness,
a deep color, medium body, a graceful,
harmonious texture, and superb length. The
penetrating fragrance of cedar, chestnuts,
minerals, and rich fruit is a hallmark of this
wine. Powerful, dense, rich, and tannic, as
well as medium to full-bodied, with awesome
extraction of fruit, this Lafite has immense
potential. Patience is required. Anticipated
maturity: 2000-2030. R. Parker for TWA, 100

Chateau Palmer 2005
Margaux, 3eme Cru Classe
This spectacular offering should continue to
improve, and may merit an even higher score
after additional aging. Stunningly rich and
powerful, the dark purple-tinged 2005 Palmer
is a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon,
40% Merlot, and 7% Petit Verdot. Aromas
of incense, burning embers, black currants,
plums, licorice, and flowers are followed by
a full-bodied Margaux with more weight and
power even than its nearby first-growth rival,
Chateau Margaux. The abundant acidity and
tannins are beautifully coated by the wines
exceptional fruit extract and overall harmony
and richness. It is so concentrated that one is
hard pressed to find even a hint of new oak.

Strong reduction characterizes this raw and
almost unbelievably primary nose that leads
to big, rich, and opulent flavors that possess a
forceful, detailed and quite minerally finish that
is serious, brooding and strikingly long. This is
texturally and stylistically different than virtually
all the other wines though there may be
convergence once it develops further in barrel
though for now, its a wine apart. Burghound,

1990
Cote de Nuits

label
Bottle No. 17533
A stunning, massive, full-on and completely
classic La Tche nose that displays almost
unbelievable complexity so with many different
elements that it is impossible to even begin
to describe them all; the primary components
include ethereal and still fresh pinot fruit,
clove, knock out spiciness, anise, hoisin,
soy and a trace of earth but these elements
only hint at the sheer depth. The flavors are
big, rich, refined, classy, penetrating and
superbly powerful yet everything is in perfect
balance and there is more than sufficient sve
to balance off the still considerable tannins.
The finish is intense, pure and so long that
it is haunting; I could literally still taste this
wine days later after I had it because it had
such a dramatic and emotional impact. In
its youth, this was one of the finest young
Burgundies that I have ever been privileged to
try and it only seems to get better with each
passing year. For my taste, this is getting
close to arriving at its peak but its not quite
there though again, I stress that this is to my
taste and some may find it to already be in
its sweet spot of maturation. In short, this is
absolutely brilliant. Note that while I have had
relatively consistent notes, I have had two
bottles that were a bit astringent on the finish
and not in the class of what I describe above.

Founded in 1988 by John Hall, Goose Island has been at the forefront of the craft beer boom in the United States.
Starting from scratch at a time when microbrew wasnt part of everyday lexicon, Goose Island started to push the
boundaries and challenge the American beer drinkers palate. In 1992, they pioneered the process of aging beer
in bourbon barrels and later expanded their barrel aging program to include American interpretations of traditional
Belgian ales.
It is our pleasure to offer the following four lots directly from the cellars of Goose Island, who has generously offered
to donate the proceeds of sale to benefit the ALS Therapy Development Institute, the worlds first and largest nonprofit biotech 100% focused on developing treatments for ALS.

In the event the buyer is a partnership or corporate entity, the receiver of the wine shall furnish proof fulfilling this criteria.
2. Some of the lots in this sale are offered subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and Skinner, Inc., below which
the lot will not be sold. In most cases, the reserve will be set below the estimated range, but in no case will it exceed the estimates listed. A representative of Skinner, Inc.

have sole discretion in determining the purchaser and may also, at his or her election, withdraw the lot or reoffer the lot for sale. The auctioneer shall have sole discretion
to refuse any bid, or refuse to acknowledge any bidder. Please note Massachusetts state law requires all purchasers of alcoholic beverages be at least 21 years of age. Any

and any additional charges that may apply, remit the proceeds to the purchaser.

or if a bank authorization has been received guaranteeing the check. Skinner, Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. reserve the right to hold merchandise purchased until the funds
have cleared the bank. The purchaser agrees to pay Skinner and/or Lower Falls Wine Co. a handling charge of $25.00 for any check dishonored by the drawee.

highest successful bidder, Skinner Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. may exercise all of its rights and remedies under the law including, without limitation, (a) canceling the sale
and applying any payments made by the purchaser to the damages caused by the purchasers breach, and/or (b) offering at public auction, without reserve, any lot or item
for which the purchaser has breached any
of its obligations, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price, holding the purchaser liable for any deficiency plus all costs of sale.
8. In no event will the liability of Skinner, Inc. and Lower Falls Wine Co. to any purchaser with respect to any item exceed the purchase price actually paid by such purchaser

sold. Skinner, Inc. expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the lots sold in this catalog. The copyright in all images, illustrations and written material produced
by or for Skinner, Inc. relating to a lot, including the contents of this catalog, is, and shall remain at all times, the property of Skinner, Inc. and shall not be used by the

Ullage of wines of vintages fifteen years and younger may be assumed to be of bottom neck or better unless otherwise noted.
Similarly, regarding older vintages, lack of notation indicates acceptable and appropriate ullage, clear label and sound cork;
potential bidders must be prepared for reasonable variations in ullage in all vintages older than 20 years. Bidders with
specific condition questions should contact the Fine Wines department. Conditions generally not noted on group lots.
Bordeaux wines are cataloged referencing the 1855 classification. Chateau Petrus cataloging reflects the practice of granting it 1er
Cru Classe and other notable Pomerol Chateaux are designated Cru Classe. All Bordeaux wines may assume to be chateau bottled
unless otherwise stated.
It is standard practice for Skinner/Lower Falls Wine to open all original wooden cases (owc) for visual inspection. The opening of
banded cases will be determined on an individual basis.
For Burgundy, German wines and all other more gradually slope-shouldered bottles, the ullage measurement is taken in centimeters
from cork base, e.g. 3cm, 5cm, 7cm.

Buyers Caution: Levels are as when cataloged; ullage may change due to cork deterioration; other bottle conditions may occur
during storage and shipment. Risk of ullage variation and cork deterioration and/or failure is assumed by the buyer at time of
sale and no sale cancellations, price negotiations, or bottle substitutions will be undertaken by either Skinner or Lower Falls Wine.
Similarly, no substitutions will be made due to inaccurate descriptions.
Flights of Lots: Are of the same type, vintage and bottle count and follow one after another numerically, though ullage and bottle
conditions may vary. The auctioneer may exercise discretion to offer, in consecutive lot order and at that same price, the following
lots in the flight to the first successful bidder of that flight. Subsequently, those lots not purchased will be offered anew and so on.
Absentee bids placed on any lot in a flight will be applied to the next lot in the flight (if unsuccessful), until the flight concludes.
Environmental Note: It has only been in the last 15-20 years that the wine industry has moved away from using lead capsules to
cover the cork and neck of a bottle. When opening an older wine, if you do have a lead capsule, give consideration as to how you
dispose of it.
