Assignment 1
Construction and Operation of Analogue Circuits

NOTE ALL PASS CRITERIA MUST HAVE EVIDENCE PROVIDED TO PASS THE UNIT.
FAILURE TO PROVIDE EVIDENCE WILL LEAD TO THE COURSE DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURE
BEING INVOKED.

Scenario for the whole assignment

Learners have been asked by their employer to build and test analogue circuits to meet a new
design requirement.

Successfully completing this part of the assignment show that the student is able to:

Explain the purpose of two different types of diode, each in a different electronic circuit application
(P1)
Explain the operation of two different types of transistor, one in an analogue and one in a digital
circuit
(P2)
Build and test two different types of analogue circuit using operational amplifiers
(P4)
Modify an existing analogue circuit to achieve a given revised specification by selecting and
changing the value of one of the components
(M1)

Task 1 (P1) (P4)
Part A
a) Build the circuit shown opposite.
b) Construct a table to record the input
voltage Vs between 0 -12V in 1 volt
increments and the resultant output
voltage Vz. Adjusting the main power
supply to give the Vs value required.
c) Explain the purpose of the zener
diode.

Part B
d) Build the circuit shown opposite.
e) Switch on the power supply.
f) Connect a shorting link between 10.8
and 10.9
g) As the shorting link is connected the
Light Emitting Diode illuminates
indicating that current is driving the load.
h) Explain the purpose of the Light
Emitting Diode.

Task 2 (P2)

Version 4 The Hub 28-09-10

Academy of Advanced Technologies

a) Explain the operation of the transistor in the switching circuit used in Task 1 Part B.
b) Explain the operation of the transistor Q1 in the following circuit.

Task 4 (M1) Optional

a) Obtain the components and build
the circuit shown opposite.
b) Measure and record the transistor
Base voltage for light and dark
conditions. (sensor covered and
uncovered).
c) Modify the circuit so that it operates
over a range of light levels by
changing one component.
d) State the component changed.
e) The new range of Base voltage that
the circuit operates over.
