Since the publishing of the first magazine targeted to a general

audience in 1731, magazines now dominate most forms of print


media with thousands of different titles available with hundreds of
genres and types of magazine. Most magazines try to include
different interests, giving them the name general interest
magazines, possibly to boost sales or in general appeal to a wider
selection of target audiences by including a wide variety of content,
unlike certain specialist magazines that may only focus on a few
specific interests such as music, fashion etc. As far as the industry is
concerned, publishing is estimated to account for 231,000 jobs in the
UK alone with an almost equal employment gender split and has a
gross value of almost 10 billion. Over two thirds of the UKs
population (42 million people) read publications daily, either online
or print based, with the main publication being newspapers of
national, regional or local type, accounting for around 70% of total

and digital publisher. It was founded in 1968, at a time when the
magazine publishing industry was dominated by a handful of
companies all fighting for market share in such a competitive
marketplace. Time Inc. is and has been
owned by Time Warner since 1990 and have
one of the largest portfolios, selling over
350 million copies each year, with names
such as NME, Country Life and around 90
other popular titles; making them the second biggest publishing
company in the United Kingdom. Time Inc. produces content for a
refined audience, possibly more adult audience, but are also following
the trend of being online based with more apps and online magazines
for their titles, possibly to draw in a wider, younger audience.

Or Bauer Media Group to give it its full title, is one of the largest
European based media companies, managing over 600 magazines
and employing approximately 11000 employees in 17 different
countries, helping its influence to reach around
22 million people in the UK alone. Founded in
1875, Bauers range of products include
multiple platforms of media, such as print,
digital, radio, TV. Postal services, distribution
and marketing services. The company has been
managed for five generations by the Bauer family. Originally a
German company, the media group entered the United Kingdom in
1987, first publishing print based media and have since become
Britains third biggest publisher. As far as music publications go,
Bauer publish names such as Q, MOJO and Kerrang!

Livingly Media, formerly known as Zimbo Inc. are a solely web-based
publisher based in the USA, California. Founded in 2006 by Tony
Mamone and Danny Khatib Specialising in online web-based
publication, theyre best known for three lifestyle sites for both
desktop and mobile users, each site
featuring various media including
photography and video. These three
sites alone reach a combined audience
of over 20 million readers each month
due to being online and not in print
form. Being solely web based, Livingly Media have released various
applications, including newsstand apps and a library for celebrity
photos, but nothing with regards to the music industry.
