Based on the short story by M. G. Vassanji, determination leads to one's
success is widely portrayed. This can be seen especially in Aloo's life.
Determination leads to Aloo's success because Aloo manages to realize his
dreams of studying abroad in America. This can be seen when he works hard to
gather information and get a placement in universities in America. After being
inspired by Mr. Datoo, who comes back to visit from America, Aloo consistently
writes to many universities in order to find information from the universities. This
takes him a few months. As he does not give up, he succeeds in getting
satisfying results for his efforts. He is offered a scholarship from the California
University of Technology.
Determination leads to Aloo's success because Aloo manages to convince
his mother into allowing him to go to America. This can be seen when Aloo's
mother finally gives her blessings for him to go. Initially, Aloo's mother was
unhappy that Aloo wanted to study abroad. She was against Aloo's wish because
she believed that Aloo would not return after his studies. Apart from losing Aloo,
she was also concerned about the financial aspect of the trip. However , after
seeing Aloo's determination and consulting with Mr. Velji, Aloo gets his mother's
permission. If Aloo would have agreed to his mother's initial decision, he would
have had to give up his dream to go and study abroad in America.
