What is Heat Stress


Heat stress is a medical condition that may occur as a result
of heat exposure. Factors that create Heat Stress are:
Air
Temperature

Workload

Air Flow

Thermal
Radiation

Humidity

What is Dehydration
First symptoms of dehydration include:
Thirst
Darker urine color and
Decreased urine output

Urine color is one of the best indicators of a persons


hydration level :
Clear urine color means you are well hydrated
While darker urine color means you are dehydrated

First Aid

Move the
worker to a cool
shaded area

MOVE

DRINK
Drink plenty of
water, cool non
alcoholic
beverages

Cool the worker


Shower, bath,
sponging,
fanning etc

Ensure

Labor

Observe
employees for
alertness/
signs &
symptoms of
heat illness

Ensure effective
communication
(by voice or
observation)

Track the
weather
at the
job site

Closely supervise new employees for the first 14 days

Availability of Water
Maintain, at all
times, sufficient
quantities of cool
(Not Cold)
potable drinking
water

Water must be
fit to drink / &
readily
accessible!

At least one quart


(roughly 4 cups)

Encourage
frequent drinking
of water

Remind workers not to wait until they are thirsty

Remember: Shaded I resting
area must not cause
exposure to another health
or safety hazard

Worker Reminders
Drink water frequently
Rest in the shade for at least 5 minutes or as needed
Look out for one another and immediately report any
symptoms
Importance of immediately
reporting signs or symptoms of
heat illness to a supervisor
