mentioningtheprogramthatIenrolledmyselfin.Thismaygiveanimpressionregardingcoachingscontrarytotheir
actualnaturewhichmaymisguidethefutureaspirantsintheirchoice.Sotocleartheair,Iputforwardmyassociation
withthecoachingsinthispostandtheirutility.
ForMains
Duringmyentirepreparation,IwasinDelhionlyforthreemonthsbeginningSeptember2014tillendNovember2014.
IwasunpreparedinmanyofthetopicsofGeneralStudiessinceIhadbegunmyGSpreparationslateandsothought
ofjoiningsomecoachinginDelhipostprelims.WiththisinmindIwenttoDelhitodoashortdurationcrashcourse
betweentheprelimsandmains.
OnlySynergywasofferingsomethingthatcameclosetoacrashcourse.Itpromisedtocovermanytopicsofthe
variousGSpapers.ThoughSynergycoveredsometopicslikeWorldHistoryandPolityinsomedetail,thepacewas
veryslow.ThereasonbeingthattheyhadmixedtheirregularoneyearbatchwiththecrashcoursebatchIwasin.This
wasatotalmockery.Theadvertisementhadmadeitlooklikethattherewouldbeadedicatedbatchanditsucceeded
intakingalotofusforarideThepaceofteachingwasadjustedtothetheregularoneyearbatchaspirantswhowere
notevengivingtheexamthatyear!.Theteacherswouldkeeponharpingonverytrivialissuesforlongleadingtoalot
ofwastageoftime.Forstudentslikeuswhohadsomebasicknowledgeandhadenrolledtogetgreaterinsightintothe
topics,itwasanearcompletewasteofmoneyandmostimportantlytime.Whattheytaughtin2hourswemostly
eitherkneworcouldcoverinaroundhalfanhour.Istoppedgoingtotheclassesafteramonthandfounditbetterto
skimthroughthenotesofotherswhohadattendedtheclasses.
TestSeries
GeneralStudies:IenrolledforSynergyTestSeriesforGeneralStudies.TheTestSerieswasoneprogramthatdidhelp
metoagreatextentinthewaystoapproachthe3hourtimeperiod,toapproachaquestionetc.Talkingspecifically
aboutthetestseriesbysynergy,feedbackwasnotatalluptothemark.Therewerenoinputsgivenonhowtostartor
endtheanswer.Itdidnotsuggestanychangesinthestyleofwriting.Theveryobjectiveofthetestserieswastohave
someoneevaluateyouranswersandtosuggestcorrectionsandmodifications.Thistestseriesonlyservedtheformer
purposewithtotalneglectoftheformer.Intheendyouhadtofindfaultsyourselfalongwithyourfriendsandto
arriveatimprovementsonyourown.Thequestionsinsomepaperswereveryarbitraryandtotallyirrelevant.For
exampletheethicspaperwastootheoreticalandthequalityofcasestudiesverypoor.Themarkingwasalso
inconsistent.Thegoodthingwasthatithadspecificdateswhichmadeyouprepareforit.Alargenumberofaspirants
tookthistestserieswhichledtoameasurementofyourperformance.Howeveritwouldbefoolhardytoassumethatif
youperformhereyouwillbeassuredofagoodperformanceintheultimateexam.
Essay:IenrolledforEssaytestseriesbyRamaswamy.Theonlygoodthingwasthatitgaveyouanopportunitytowrite
something.Everythingelsewassubstandard.ThetopicsweretoobroadandnotspecificlikeinUPSC.Thebiggest
letdownwastheevaluation.Itwasatotalfarcetosaytheleast.Hewouldsitdownwithyouranswersheet,gothrough
itinaround4045secondsandwouldpretendthathehasreadyouressay.Hewouldthenblurtoutcertain
modificationstobedonetotheessay.Everyonessetofsuggestedmodificationswouldreadthesame.Somuchfor
evaluation.

1. Ifyouarecompletelyuninitiatedingeneralstudies,thenyoumayfinditusefultogoforcoaching.
2. Howeverifyouhaveacertainbackgroundoutofyourinterestinit,thenyoumayfinditawasteoftime.
3. Ifyouareagoodreaderandcangothroughanumberofbooksonyourown,youmayfindcoachinglessuseful
sinceyoucancovermuchmoreonyourowninthesametime.
4. Howeverifyoufinditlaborioustogothroughbooksandgetboredeasily,thenyoumaygoforcoaching.But
eventuallythereisnoescapingfromthestandardreferencebooksandyouwillhavetogothroughthem.Soits
bettertodevelopahealthyreadingcapacity.
2. Thoughcoachingcanbedispensedwith,Ifindtestseriesindispensabletothepreparation.Atestserieshelpsyou

WhenIstartedmypreparations,thefirstdilemmawasregardingthechoiceofoptional.Ihadjustgivenmysecond
attemptwithoutstudyinganythingin2011withElectricalEngineeringandMathsandIwasabletoattemptmorein
MathsthaninElectricalEngineeringevenafterhavingstudieditincollege.ThisreducedmyfaithinElectrical
EngineeringandIdecidedtodropitandtakeanArtssubjectalongwithMaths.HowevermyloyaltywithMathsdid
notlastlongandafterbuyingalotofbooksandwastingalotoftimeonit,Idecidedtodumpit.ItriedPhysicsfora
weekorso,thentriedthepopularoptionalsinGeographyandPublicAdministrationforsometime.Howevernothing
gotmeinterestedandalsoIusedtogetscaredathavingtocompleteanaltogethernewsubjectallbymyself.Mytrials
withvariousoptionalshadstretchedforlong.Theendresult:heapsofunopenedbooksandnotesofvarioussubjectsat
homewithoutanysuccess.

startanoptionalwithnobackgroundseemedtomelikeamountaintoohardtoclimb.SoIdecidedtosticktomycore
subjectinwhichIhadafairbitofknowledge.
ThechangeinpatterntooneoptionalmeantthatIcoulddevotetimetoit.ManaginganotheroptionalwithEEisafar
tougherjobthanmanaginggeneralstudiesalongwithEE.
ThehighscoressecuredbyPrakashRajpurohitSirandPrinceDhwanSirinElectricalEngineeringsignifiedthatwith
rightstrategy,sourcesandhardworkitwaspossibletogiveyourrankagreatleap.
MoreoverIhadvacillatedfortoolong.IntheprocessIhadwastedalotoftime.Icouldnotafforditanymorenotafter
joiningmyworkplace.Ididnothavetheluxuryoftimeanymore.Ihadtomakeachoiceandmakeitfast.
UltimatelyImadethechoicesomehwereinJuly2013andthechoicewasElectricalEngineering.
Youmakeachoiceandstickwithit.Thereisnopointthenlookingbackanddevelopingcoldfeet.Someyearsthe
papermightbetougher.Butthenithelpstorememberthatitsallrelativeandifyouarepreparedwellenough,no
matterhowharditisyouwillemergerelativelyunscathed.

AsIlookback,ifIhadtodrawlessonsfromwhatIdidIwouldcomeupwiththefollowing
