THE VICTAULIC GROOVED

SYSTEM

Anatomy of a Groove
The distinguishing feature of the Victaulic grooved
mechanical piping system is, as the name implies, a
groove where the pipe and fitting engage to form a selfrestraining joint. The position, depth and cross-section of
this groove combine with the fitting housing in an optimal
strength-to-weight relationship. The result is a permanent
connection capable of withstanding thrust loads up to the
maximum rated operating pressure.

A groove, either rolled or cut into the pipe, distinguishes the

Victaulic system from conventional joining methods such as
welding, threading or flanging.

Sch. 40 and 80 cut groove only, Sch. 30 8, 10 and 12" (200, 250 and 300 mm) cut
groove only, Sch. 5, 10 and 20 grooving not recommended. Roll grooving of T6
pipe is not recommended because in this stage the pipe is harder and may crack
during roll grooving.
2 - PVC to ASTM D1785: Type 1, Grade 1 (PVC 1120); Type 1, Grade 2 (PVC 1220);
Type 2, Grade 1 (PVC 2120); or Type 2, Grade 1 (PVC 2116). PVC must be radius
cut grooved.
3 - Ductile iron: Special Class 53 minimum wall must be radius cut grooved (rigid or
flexible groove) to ANSI/AWWA C-606.
For information on HDPE, FRP, specialty alloys, lined, coated and other types of pipe,
contact Victaulic.

There have been significant advances in grooving

technology over the past 30 years. Today the predominant
method for non-abrasive services is roll grooving which
radially displaces the metal but removes no material from
the pipe wall. The process results in a small upset in the
pipe I.D. which, due to smooth entry and exit from the
joint, has negligible effect on flow or line pressure. Tests
conducted on 4" (114,3 mm) standard Schedule 40 steel
pipe indicated a pressure drop of less than 0.10 PSI
(0,689 kPa) at 800 GPM (20.2 ft./sec.). These losses are
comparable with those of so called full-port joints such as
threads and flanges. Victaulic roll grooving tools perform to
ANSI/AWWA C-606 standards assuring proper groove
dimensions.
For abrasive services where an I.D. upset is not desirable,
standard-weight or heavy-wall pipe is cut grooved. This
involves a portable machining tool which is driven around
the circumference of the pipe removing metal to create a
uniform, concentric groove. Significantly, cut grooving
removes less material and does not penetrate as deeply
into the pipe wall as threading. Tool bits utilized on cast or
ductile iron and PVC piping are modified to provide a
radiused cut groove which minimizes stress concentration
in these notch sensitive materials. In addition, tools can be
modified to perform double grooving for working pressures
up to 4000 PSI (27576 kPa) and machining for rubber
linings.
The Right Groove
Roll grooving is the method of choice for preparing pipe
made of standard or lightwall carbon steel, stainless steel,
aluminum, PVC, copper and other materials. The chart at
left correlates the most commonly used types of pipe with
the corresponding grooving method. Both roll and cut
grooving meet the requirements of ANSI/AWWA C-606.
Victaulics first recommendation is that the pipe end be
square cut. However, beveled end pipe may be used
provided the wall thickness is standard or less, and the
bevel meets ANSI B16.25 (37). Square cut pipe must be
used with FlushSeal and EndSeal gaskets.

ROLL GROOVING
The concept of cold forming (rolling) a groove into pipe was
developed by Victaulic in 1955. Victaulic has developed a
full line of tools that permits roll grooving of standard
weight steel pipe.
Victaulic Vic-Easy roll grooving tools are all designed to
rotate the pipe as an upper roll is impressed into the pipe.
The lower roll, in addition to driving the pipe, is the female
die inside the pipe. The upper roll is the male die. For all
but the VE12, VE26, VE46 and VE226 tools, Victaulic roll
groovers use hydraulic pressure to force the upper roll into
the pipe to form the groove. Groove depth is controlled by
an adjustable stop. The configuration of the rolls provides
the proper "A" (pipe end to edge of groove) and "B" (groove
width) dimensions.
Roll grooving removes no metal; the groove is cold formed
into the pipe wall. Since the groove is cold formed, the
groove configuration has rounded edges which somewhat
reduce the available pipe movement. Standard roll grooved
pipe will provide one-half the expansion/contraction or
deflection of the same size standard cut groove pipe. Roll
grooving is applicable using appropriate roll groove sets for
steel, stainless, aluminum (Type 6061-T4, 6063-T4) and
similar metallic pipe as well as up to Schedule 80 PVC and
copper tubing.

Vic-Easy tools permit roll grooving of Schedule 40 size

pipe through 10" (273,0 mm) and standard wall up to 36"
(914,0 mm) O.D. (0.375"/9,5 mm wall thickness).
Shop production, fabrication and portable
job-site tools available.
Roll grooving is fast, clean and easy.
Specialized rolls for Copper, Stainless, PVC and others
All roll groovers are equipped with enhanced tracking
rolls which allow hands off grooving for short lengths of
pipe.

CUT GROOVING
Victaulic developed the grooved piping concept in 1925
and designed the first portable cut grooving tools in 1945.
Technology now provides a variety of tools for cut grooving
from - 24" (26,9 - 610,0 mm) pipe including steel, stainless, aluminum, ductile and cast iron, PVC plastic, bare or
lined pipe.
All Victaulic cut groovers are designed to be driven around
a stationary pipe to machine away material, providing a
groove. The design of the tool assures a groove which is
concentric with the pipe O.D., even with out-of-round pipe.
The groove is always of uniform depth. An integral depth
stop is adjustable to provide proper groove depth. Stops in
the tool provide the proper dimension from the pipe end to
the groove (A dimension). The tool bit provides proper
groove width (B dimension).

C
Standard Cut Groove
(For steel and other IPS pipe)

Cut grooving is basically designed for standard weight or

heavier wall thicknesses of pipe. A square cut groove is
used for steel and other metallic IPS pipe. This provides
maximum coupling gripping efficiency and the fullest pipe
movement capabilities. The dimensions (A and B) of the
groove can be adjusted through the use of a tool bit and
pipe stops to suit specific needs. When cut grooving with
the VG412, the A dimension is automatically set by the
grooving knife used. For coated steel (and other) IPS pipe,
Victaulic EndSeal ES groove dimensions provide slightly
narrower A and B dimensions for a snug fit of the ES
gasket central leg against the pipe ends for coating protection and increased rigidity.
The groove for ductile and cast pipe, as well as PVC plastic,
is radiused (R) at the base to accommodate the pipe
properties. Changing tool bits and pipe stops allows easy
adjustment from standard rigid radius groove to reduce
any point of stress concentration in this notch-sensitive
material. The high speed cutter in the VPG tool provides
this configuration.

GROOVING TIMES
Time for pipe preparation obviously depends on widely varied factors including productivity, location, type, hardness, and
wall thickness of pipe. As a gauge for typical grooving times, the following chart was prepared to include grooving time
with pipe in position and tool properly set for the size and depth of groove. Times will be extended when going from one
size to another for roll changes, depth stop setting, trial grooving and other minor adjustments incidental to changing pipe
sizes or initial set-up time prior to the first production groove.
