elk shoulder seasons
in
five central Montana hunting
districts, state wildlife officials
are contacting landowners and
working out details for hunters

interested in participating in the

post-season hunts.
The
shoulder-season
hunts, aimed at reducing elk
populations in some areas, are
pilot projects approved earlier
this month by the Montana

Fish & Wildlife Commission for

hunting districts on the north
and east sides of the Big Belts,
the Castle Mountains, and in the
Missouri River Breaks.

Elk shoulder seasons continued from front

hunting districts 445, 446, 449, and 452 will begin

on Nov. 30, 2015 and end on Feb. 15, 2016. The
shoulder-season in hunting district 410 will begin
Jan. 1, 2016 and end Feb. 15, 2016. All hunts are
for antlerless elk only.
The new shoulder seasons are in response
to concerns from Governor Steve Bullock,
lawmakers, hunters, landowners and others about
overabundant elk in some hunting districts. In
all, 80 of Montanas 138 elk management units are
over objective to some degree. Shoulder seasons
can occur before and after the general archery
and rifle seasons.

Weve been pleased and encouraged with the
response from landowners and hunters, said Jeff
Hagener, FWP director in Helena. A number of
landowners will be working with FWP to define
and provide access to take good advantage of this
additional harvest opportunity authorized by the
commission. We need that cooperation and well
need hunters to be respectful and capable guests
on private land.
Hagener noted that hunters must obtain
permission to hunt on private lands and stressed
that they will not need to register or be selected
from any roster. In hunting districts 445, 446, 449,
and 452, hunters only need a valid 2015 general
elk license or a Region 4 004-00 B license to
participate. Hunters with valid either-sex elk
permits for hunting district 445 and a valid
2015 general elk license can also participate but
can only harvest antlerless elk.

In hunting district 410, hunters must possess
a valid 2015 410-20 either-sex permit or 41000 B license to participate. Hunters can only
harvest antlerless elk.
These shoulder season opportunities are
available on private lands, Bureau of Land
Management lands, and State of Montana School
Trust Lands only. No elk shoulder seasons will
occur on national forest lands, the Charles M.
Russell Wildlife National Wildlife Refuge or on
any FWP wildlife management areas.
Hagener directed anyone interested in
participating to visit FWPs website for additional

Accumulating snow and lower temperatures are indeed
likely across the whole of northeast Montana, according
to the National Weather Service in Glasgow and the
crystal ball they use! Tuesday night and Wednesday
will bring accumulating snow and colder temperatures.
Currently, the heavier amounts of 2 to 5 inches is
expected south of the Missouri River, with 1 to 2 inches
to the north. Gusty northerly wind will also create areas
of blowing and drifting snow and reduced visibility.
Snowfall will begin to taper from the north late
Wednesday afternoon and evening. High temperatures
on Wednesday and Thursday will only reach the upper
teens into the 20s, with lows both nights dipping into
the single digits.
Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 23. East
southeast wind 9 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.
Tuesday: A 20 percent chance of showers after 11am.
Mostly cloudy, with a high near 37. Light and variable wind
becoming north northwest 6 to 11 mph in the afternoon.
Tuesday Night: A 50 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with
a low around 19. North wind 13 to 17 mph, with gusts as
high as 24 mph. New snow accumulation of less than one
inch possible.
Wednesday: A 30 percent chance of snow, mainly after
11am. Patchy blowing snow after 11am. Mostly cloudy, with
a high near 25. North wind 18 to 20 mph, with gusts as high
as 28 mph. New snow accumulation of less than one inch
possible.
Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 8.
North wind 9 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.
Thanksgiving Day: Sunny, with a high near 23. West
northwest wind 6 to 8 mph.
Thursday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 6.

Online winter training course

for CoCoRaHS next Monday
The NWS Glasgow will soon be presenting an
online winter training for CoCoRaHS to anyone
interested in either a refresher or to those interested
in becoming a new CoCoRaHS weather observer for
northeast Montana. If you are available, you are invited
to attend the training to learn more about the program,
but below is a brief overview for those who would be
new observers:
CoCoRaHS stands for the Community
Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network. Not only
do CoCoRaHS observations assist meteorologists at the
National Weather Service with warning decisions and
verification processes but the information is used by
teachers and educators, those with agricultural interests,
mosquito control, and by many, many other people!
This program is an incredible opportunity for
motivated individuals with interest in weather & science
to make a real difference for countless people and
industries. At the training, you will learn more about
CoCoRaHS and how to take weather observations
with a focus on winter weather. In addition, there will
be several chances for observers to be opportunistic
in learning more about weather and science through
videos, presentations, and other activities over time.

Scotty Speech & Drama faces

fierce competition in Miles City

This weekend Glasgow Speech and Drama attended
another extremely competitive meet at Custer County
High School in Miles City.
I was extremely proud of the performances
that our team delivered with two thirds of the team
qualifying for the final round against some really stiff
competition, said Scotty Head Coach Matt Bacon
Morgan Miller competing in Serious Solo Drama
finished in 4th.
Amy Nelson in Memorized Public Address and
Max Knodel in Original Oratory both finished 3rd
in their events.
Amber OMara in Humorous Oral Interpretation
and Eric Covall in Extemporaneous Speaking both
finished 5th in their events.
Andy Brandt finished 7th in Original Oratory.

Looking for U.S. soldiers

For the past five years, the GHS Student Council

has had a display in the hallway of GHS that represents
all former GHS graduates that are currently serving
outside of the United States. They have fallen behind in
who is on display and they need to update their pictures

Hinsdale FFA comes home with some titles

The Hinsdale FFA Chapter
made the journey to Glendive
this past weekend to compete in
the District/State Floriculture
and Food Science CDEs (Career
Development Event).
In the Floriculture contest
the teams were tested on their
knowledge of floral design,
plant identification, hazardous
situations, and problem solving, as
well as being challenged to create
arrangements, product displays,

and hand drawing an advertising

flyer.
The Varsity A team won 1st
place in the Big Muddy District
and 4th in the State.
Casity Boucher received 4th
place individual in the District,
while Mickayla Johnson won high
individual for both the District
and State contests.
In
the
Food
Science
competition, the teams were asked
to create their own pasta product

and present their marketing plan

to a set of judges. Contestants
also completed taste, smell, and
triangle food tests as well as
relaying knowledge on food safety
in various written tests.

The Varsity team placed 10th
in the state and hope to improve
off of this first year of competing
and place higher next year.

Planting a Christmas Tree

While the sun was shining but clouds loomed overhead, snowflakes were beginning
to fall on Friday afternoon as the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce & Agricultures
Christmas tree was put into place across from D&G. The beautiful pine tree came
from the back yard of Travis and Marcy Kittlesons cabin near Fort Peck. It was
blocking my view, Travis said, and thus, it was cut down and hauled to Glasgow.
