Objectives
To be able to identify the type of planning that should be undertaken in
order to turn Weinstock, Kuebler and Grumliks idea into reality.
III.
Brief Summary
Moscow as a place is full of opportunities specifically in business
industry. The fact that this place is always depicted by photographers
as grim and dreary suggests that this place has a lot of rooms to
improve which are opportunities for businessmen to look into. This was
the case of James Weinstock, Paul Kuebler and Vladimr Grumlik. The
trio came from different backgrounds but they all have one thing in
common and that is they live healthy. These men were serious about
staying physically fit, but they didnt see any gym facility in Moscow
with the type of service and facility management that they thought an
outstanding gym should have. They realized that there simply was no
good Western-style health club in Moscow. So they seized the
opportunity and decided to start one.

situation. And for this situation the strategic long term directional
single-use planning is the best planning path to adapt.
V.
Decision Constraints
The advantage of the first solution is the coverage and scope of the
plans that can be made. By identifying both short term and long term
plans at the same time, the execution of plans can be carried out
simultaneously. Another is that both of the strategic plans can
intertwine with each other and linked together. The disadvantage of
this is the fact that making both the short term and long term plans
that would work together for a longer period of time is difficult for a
manager or starters. It would take time to devise this plans. Typically
the plans that would be made here are prone to revision, making it
hard for the managers to execute each plans when changes occurs
often.
For the second solution, the advantage of identifying a solid path for
the plans is that organizing this is easier. Since there is a clear path for
plan to take, the purpose at the end is also clear. Aside from the ease
and clarity of this method, is the specificity of the plans that can be
made here. The solid path of the plans that can be made here is also
easier to carry out. Lastly, it can also be easier to revise in case of
sudden change in the situation and environment. The main
disadvantage of this solution is that it loses its flexibility. The manager
is going to be limited in the plan replacing his creativity and intuition.
VI.
Recommendation
Both of the solutions can be applied, but for startups like what James
Weinstock, Paul Kuebler and Vladimr Grumlik is thinking and especially
that they are entering into a new market, a broader strategic plans
should be undertaken. I suggest that the first solution would fit in the
starting phase of the business because it offers more flexibility and
mobility. A startup business should not waste resources so for me it is
better to take time in creating the plan so that in the long-run, the
implementation of the plan will be spontaneous and effective. When
the business is totally up and running, that is the time that the second
solution comes in because it provides a clear path towards a goal or
objective.

Conclusion
The case is applicable to me when I am going to be in a situation that
is new to me. Like planning an event school. As an officer and leader,
we are mostly the ones involve in planning. The plans should cover

everything, from the preparation of the event to the event proper and
finally wrapping up the event. The plans should also be strategic in the
sense that the flow of execution should be smooth so that there will be
no time and resources wasted.
