BURGULARY ALARM

INTRODUCTION
Within the past decade or so, the alarm
industry has witnessed considerable
innovation. To better understand the
technology surrounding modern alarm
systems, we should begin by examining
one in its most basic state. Simply put a
traditional burglar alarm is an electrical
circuit built into the entry way of a
building. This circuit acts a container for
electricity, providing a clear pathway
between two points of opposite charge

where an electrical current can flow.

When we open part of a circuit, we alter
this pathway and disrupt the flow of
electricity. Conversely, when we close a
circuit, you allow for the creation of a
new stream of electricity. For instance,
in a closed circuit alarm system, the
circuit is closed when our door is shut.
Turning on our alarm initiates a new
stream of electricity that can flow within
this closed circuit. When someone opens
the door, this opens the circuit,
terminates the electrical current, and
triggers our alarm.

COMPONENTS
When it comes to picking out
the perfect burglar alarm for
your home, there are often an
overwhelming number of
options to choose from. While
some may think that all alarm
systems are created equally,
this is far from the truth. They
can range from simple alarms

on each door to a whole-house

system that keeps track of
every movement and alerts
police if there is any indication
of a potential break in. When
deciding how elaborate you
want your burglar alarm to be,
it can be helpful to know a bit
about some of the main
components that most security
systems includeInput devices
Output devices
Input Devices

Input devices are the sensors

that activate the burglar alarm
when someone enters your
home unauthorized and include
devices such as door and
window sensors, motion
detectors, and glass-breakage
detectors.
Door and Window Sensors
Door sensors trigger your
alarm when an intruder opens
a door and are a good idea to
install at every exterior door,
including the door from your
garage to your home. Door

sensors are also useful as door

chimes that emit a quick beep
when you open the door
without the alarm system
active. Window sensors trigger
your alarm system if an
intruder attempts to open a
window. Unlike invisible door
sensors, window sensors are
usually visible, which can also
serve as a deterrent for
potential burglars.
MOTION DETECTORS
Motion detectors activate your
alarm system when they detect
motion in your home. These

are best for the first floor of

your home if you have a twostory so they do not trigger the
alarm when someone goes to
the bathroom in the middle of
the night. Most motion
detectors use infrared
technology and have a 90degree coverage area.
Glass-Breakage Detectors
Glass-breakage detectors are
programmed to detect the
noise or vibration produced
when glass breaks. There are
many varieties and sensitivity

levels of glass-breakage
detectors, so it can be helpful
to consult with a home security
company before deciding on
the best option for your home.
Output Devices
Output devices for a burglar
alarm include components such
as horns/sirens and strobe
lights. These let you, your
neighbors, and police know
that someone has activated
your alarm and are an
excellent means for scaring off
burglars. A horn/siren makes a

loud noise when an intruder

attempts to break into your
home, which draws attention
to the burglar and is an
excellent way to make him or
her leave your home
immediately. A strobe light is a
great way to let neighbors
know an intruder has activated
your alarm and is also helpful
inside for hearing-impaired
homeowners.
Because a burglar alarm can
potentially include many
components, it is a good idea
to contact a home security
company for advice regarding

which alarm system is best for

you. In addition, it is always
helpful to have any system
professionally installed, as this
better ensures your burglar
alarm works when you need it
most.
