Last week I touched on the Universal Kingship of Jesus Christ. Being as he is the creator of all
things, and being the one and only divine human, He is automatically our supreme Lord. All
authority, both spiritual and political, comes from Jesus Christ. Each human who has authority only
has authority because of Jesus Christ. Of course Jesus could govern our day to day affairs if he so
chose to do so, but he has decided not to do so. Instead he shares his authority with legitimate civil
leaders. Jesus never laid out what form this civil leadership should take. Should it be a monarchy? A
democracy? A Republic? Jesus never says and throughout history many different forms of
government have existed. Each form can be legitimate however and whatever form it takes each
citizen should obey their civil leaders with respect but within these carefully defined boundaries.
First of all, a government should be legitimate. Just because a lunatic with a bunch of thugs seizes
the capitol city and starts issuing orders does not give him authority. The government should be
formed from the reasonable consent of the governed. Secondly, civil leaders must govern within
reason. Once the government begins to make absurd laws and make absurd demands on the
citizenry, then those laws do not have Gods recognition. If the government declares that everyone
has to go on a vegan diet permanently (just because the government thinks killing animals is bad)
such a law would be against reason and no one would be obliged to obey. Thirdly, the government
must never issue laws that contradict Gods law. Gods law is always supreme and it trumps any
human law. If a civil leader decides that he knows better than God, the citizenry are obliged to
disobey. This is because civil leaders only have authority because Christ has granted them a certain
measure of his authority. But if the civil leader turns on Christ, his authority ceases (at least on that
point).
Unfortunately in our times governments world-wide have been issuing laws that both contradict
reason and contradict the law of God. Any such laws are not really laws and should not be obeyed
by citizens and in fact should be resisted (that is peacefully resisted). Most countries in the world
have declared that unborn babies do not have human rights and can be killed at will. This is grossly
contrary to our natural instinct to care for young life and against Gods commandment against
murder. Many countries have also declared that persons of the same sex can enter into so called
marriages (they are not really marriages) and that everyone else has to accept these fake marriages.
Marriage was established by God to propagate human life and same-sex
unions are not in any way open to life. All of this is contrary to both reason
and Christs law. Since Christ is King first, he must be obeyed before any
man. Each citizen of reason, and every Christian, is obliged to ignore and
even resist such immoral laws. Even as the culture we live in defies God, and
passes laws in open contradiction to Gods law, we must raise our children to
know that Jesus Christ is our one and true King, and our one and true God.
No government leader can take Gods place. His laws trump our laws and
we must in the end obey Christ the King over any human civil leader.

a parishioner.

more frequently if the request is made. His cell phone number
can be found in the leftmost column of the bulletin under
