ACUPUNCTURE WORKS!
Acupuncture is surprisingly popular these days. Americas growing
interest in alternative medicines has helped create a demand for the
prickly procedure. Americans spend $500 million a year on acupuncture
for health problems ranging from headaches to low-back pain; today
even dogs are horses are trotting off to see their acupuncturists.
But does it work? Most western-trained doctors remain skepical.
Explanations that acupuncture restores the balance of yin and yan *
sound to scientists suspiciously like charlatanism. People in favour of
acupuncture say that their claims are supported by hundreds of research
studies, as well as a successful track record that extends back 2,500
years.
To solve the controversy and evaluate the quality of research, the U.S.
National Institute of Health assembled a panel of experts in a scientific
court known as a consensus conference. After three days of analysing
and interrogating practitioners, the President of the Institute said: It is
time to take acupuncture seriously. There are many situations where it
really works. The panel found acupuncture effective in treating painful
disorders of the muscle and skeleton systems, such as tennis elbow, and
in some cases even more effective than conventional therapies.
The great advantage of acupuncture over Western medicine is that it
is harmless; unlike drugs and surgery, acupuncture has no side effects.
Besides, if it is cheaper and less painful than going to hospital, and if it
gets results, Americans will use it.
