Why does lord krishna keeps peacock feather on his

head?
Best Answer: 1) The peacock feather contains all the seven colours in it. The entire universe is covered
by akasha(ether) which appears blue in day times and black in night. So lord Krishna is identified by both
the colours 'Blue' & 'Black'. Krishna paksha in Indian calender means the days that follow after Full-moon
day till the New-moon day i.e, the darker phase of 14 days of the moon.
Further, he wears the peacock feather which signifies that the entire range of colours (we mortal beings)
is in him. In virtue he is colourless but in the day he appears blue, black in the night to our vision and in
between make us discuss all this multi-coloured multi-perceptional views.
Sri Brahma Samhita, Verse 30:
"venum kvanantam aravinda-dalayataksam
BARHAVATAMSAM asitambuda-sundarashgam
kandarpa-koti-kamaniya-viesa-sobham
govindam adi purusam tam aham bhajami"
'Always playing the flute,
His eyes like blooming lotus-petals,
His head adorned with a PEACOCK feather,
His beautiful Form the hue of a blue cloud;
with the unique beauty that charms millions of Cupidsthe Primeval Lord, Govinda, do I adore.'
r Caitanya Caritmrta Madhya, Chapter 21, Verse 109:
"mukta-hara baka-panti, indra-dhanu-pincha tati,
ptambara vijur-saacara
krishna nava-jaladhara, jagat-sasya-upara,
varisaye llamrta-dhara"
'Krishna wears a pearl necklace that appears like a chain of white ducks around His neck. The peacock
feather in His hair appears like a rainbow, and His yellow garments appear like lightning in the sky.
Krishna appears like a newly risen cloud, and the gops appear like newly grown grains in the field.
Constant rains of nectarean pastimes fall upon these newly grown grains, and it seems that the gops are
receiving beams of life from Krishna, exactly as grains receive life from the rains.'
2) Lecture on 'Venu-Gita - The Flute Song' by Srila Maharaja, on January 21, 2001, at Murwillumbah,
Australia:

'Krishna has so many decorations, of flowers and peacock feathers. You can see more than seven colors
in the peacocks' feathers.
One day Lord Krishna was taking His flute and singing, and was also in a position and mood of dancing .
Seeing this, all the peacocks of the forest thought, "Oh, He is like a cloud, a new cloud full of water." As
soon as they saw Krishna, they began to dance to the tune of His flute. They thought, "Oh, this vamsiwalla (player of the flute) is so very expert, and I can dance so well to His tune." They therefore gave Him
a peacock feather as a gift. Krishna took it and He always keeps it on His head, as a donation from the
peacock.'

In the stretch between Mathura and Dwarka, across India, peacocks are ubiquitous, the feathers of which
went to make a decorative ornament. Further, Lord Krishna (Lord Vishnu) is the maternal uncle of Lord
Skanda, the Senapathy, whose mount is peacock, to bless which, Lord Krishna wears peacock feathers,
to wish success in Lord Skanda's endeavours; it is like Lord Hanuman occupying the flag mast when Lord
Krishna went as charioteer for Arjun.

Why lord krishna Wears Peacock

Feather on His Head?
Hare Krsna
Please accept my humble obeisance. All glories to Srila Prabhupada

When one day Krishna woke first from a rest in the forest with his cowherd friends, he decided to wake
everyone and call the cows grazing at a distance by playing his flute. When Krishna blew the nectar of
his lips into the flute, a melodious raga with a slow rhythm and a deep base emerged from its end. This
wonderful vibration enchanted the peacocks in and around the Govardhan hills. Their hearts began to
sing in happiness and fill the skies with their own song. The resonant vibrations from the flute
encouraged the peacocks to dance. Krishna, who is the source of all dramatic arts, was pleased with

their dance and encouraged them by his kind glances and sweet smiling. They cried with joy and it
sounded all over the hills. In time, their sounds became indistinguishable from the echoes. They
became excited and jumped up and down, flapping their wings. As the peacocks danced, the kings of
peacocks made his way to the lotus feet of SriKrishna, touches His holy feet and makes a sound which
SriKrishna understands as a thanking note and requesting Him to dance with them. SriKrishna accepts
to dance and moves amidst them, dancing like the peacocks increasing the tempo and playing to the
rhythm of His steps. The bliss of the peacocks increased multifold when SriKrishna danced with them. It
was so overwhelming, that some peacocks fainted. All the animals and cowherds of the Govardhan hills
stood transfixed, unable to move their eyes away from the dance of SriKrishna. The flute in SriKrishna's
hand seeing the uncommon performance of its master began to sing on its own. The spectacle was
extremely splendid when seen from the top of the Govardhan hills, the heaven and even the
netherland. They danced for a long time and slowly the tired peacocks stopped dancing. Then Krishna
danced to the rhythm of His own steps. After many days, when he stopped dancing, there was an
enchanting silence. The king of the peacocks approached SriKrishna with great humility, bowed down
his head and said, "You have created a festival of bliss for which we remain eternally indebted to You.
It is our duty to offer you 'Gurudakshina'. I request You to accept our only opulence, our plumage. Wear
them on your crown as a decoration." With large tears of ecstasy, the king of peacocks dropped many
divine feathers. SriKrishna lovingly accepted the offering of the peacocks and picked up the feathers
and to everybody's joy, placed a few of them on his turban. Thus he came to wear the peacock
feathers.

LORD KRISHNA EXPLAINS ABOUT

HIS FLUTE : A JANMASHTAMI
SPECIAL

The Flute Notes that you are listening now is played by me on my Base Flute
(Long Flute) which is based on Raga Shivranjani which is my most favorite raga. I
am sure you will enjoy my Flute Tune. Please give me your feedback through your
valuable comment. This is my Janmashtami Special for you as Lord Krishna's
Birthday falls on Aughst 24th, 2008 and he was born exactly at 12 Midnight
sharp).
Among all Hindu Gods, Lord Krishna is very close to common folks. He was
always called as "Natkhat" (roughly translated Mischievious in English) since he
played pranks during his childhood with his friends Gwaalas and also with his
God-Mother Yashoda and later in youth, he played pranks with Gopikas. Of
course at times he showed his various LEELAS. It is said that sometimes he
talked to his dearest spiritual companion Radha through the Flute Tune which
Radha only understood perfectly. If you compare Lord Krishna with Lord Rama
(another most beloved Hindu God along with Lord Krishna), you will see a major
difference. Lord Rama himself led the war to defeat wicked King Ravana whereas
Lord Krishna never fought any war himself. Instead of that he narrated Bhagvad
Geeta to Warrior Arjuna at the battlefiled of Kurukshetra when Arjuna refused to
take up arms against his close kith and kin the Kauravas. Finally, Arjuna was
convinced after he absorbed what Lord Krishna had to say thorough Timeless
Epic Holy Geeta (Song of Lord) and rest is history.
Flute is the oldest musical instrument known to mankind. Everyone is attracted
towards the melodious sound of flute, which is Lord Krishna's favorite
instrument. Bamboo flute is the only musical instrument which is most natural
and does not contain any mechanical parts. This is the reason the flute is very
close to Nature and sounds very melodious when played in an atmosphere
surrounded by Nature. Flute has been mentioned in the Puranas which were
written thousands of years ago.

Flute along with Mouth Organ is one of very few instruments which are portable.
You can carry a short flute in your pocket and can carry it anywhere with ease
unlike most other instruments which are very bulky. Flute sounds best when
played in the atmosphere surrounded by nature. For example, if you take a short
flute to mountains or a thick forest and then play, the echo of the sound bouncing
back either from the leaves of the trees or from the mountains is simply very
delightful. Every flute player in such circumstances receives a celestial
experience. Nature actually talks back to you. Flute being the most natural
instrument goes very well with the nature. Even while playing flute you can see
that birds start chirping and try to talk to you through their singing. Although it
sounds very melodious, the flute player of course cannot comprehend as to what
the birds are trying to communicate.
Once, Lord Krishna asked his devotees what they would like to become in his
hands. Some said the lotus, some the conch, some the chakra and so on, but no
one mentioned the flute. Krishna advised them to become his flute. In his
discourse to his devotees, he said that in the human personality structure, as in
the flute, there are 8 main spots: The five organs of perception, mind, intellect,
and ego. If you get rid of your ego and become like a hollow reed flute, then the
Lord will come to you, pick you up, put his lips and breathe through you and out
of the hollowness of your heart, the captivating melody will emerge for all
creations to enjoy. But if you will continue your attitude of dislike, hatred and
jealousy, the Lord will distance himself from you, since you will be useless for his
purpose.

When Krishna was called Ranchod

Jarasandha, the King of Madgadha, was furious with Krishnafor
having killed Kamsa, his son-in-law. He had come to know about
Kamsas death when his daughters-Asti and Prapti- sent a
message to him that they had now become widows, thanks to
Krishna.
Jarasandha decided to teach Krishna and the Yadavas a lesson.
Since the Yadavas were concentrated in and aroundMathura, he
decided to battle them and destroy the race forever.
Jarasandha then repeatedly attacked Mathura and each time, he
caused massive death and destruction. The seventeen attacks
that he led on Mathura had sapped the energy of the Yadavas
and stunted the growth of the city.
The economy of the Yadavas was in shambles and the wars had
emptied the treasury. Jarasandha was a powerful enemy with a
huge army and the Yadavas barely managed to withstand his
attacks with even the likes of Krishna and Balarama on their side.
One day, Krishna received disturbing news that Jarasandha had
forged an alliance with several other kings to forever destroy the
Yadava clan.
Jarasandha had entered into an armed alliance with Emperor
Damghosha of Chedi, Dantavakra of Karusa, Rukmi of Vidarbha
and the brothers Vind and Anuvinda of Avanti. The alliance had
only one aim-destroy Mathura and the Yadava clan.
There was more disturbing news for the Yadavas.
TheKingdom of Hastinapur expressed helplessness in coming to
the aid of the Yadavas. Meanwhile, the alliance began its march

towards Mathura. Thus the Yadavas were left forlon and at the
mercy of a huge force.
The alliance decided to simultaneously attack Mathura from
several fronts. Jarasandha then sent a message to the Yadavas
stating that they would be spared if they handed the heads
of Krishna and Balarama to him.
The Yadavas refused and readied themselves for
war.Krishna was the only person who repeatedly cautioned his
clansmen against the war. He then hit upon the idea of shifting the
capital from Mathura to Dwaraka.
Krishna placed the suggestion before King Ugrasena his
grandfather.
Ugrasena and all other courtiers and even the commanders of the
Yadava army were against flight. Balarama too was against the
move. He wanted to fight against Jarasandha.
Urgasena then pointed out to Krishna that if he ran away from
battle field, he would forever be known as a Ranchod or one who
has run away from a battle field.
Krishna retorted that he had no worry about any new name being
given to him. I already have many names and one more does not
make any difference, he said. Moreover, I am willing to sacrifice
my reputation for saving my people and their lives, he said.
When Balarama again raised the war cry, Krishna gently
reminded him that war is not the solution for solving all the
problems. He said the confederacy of kings against Mathurais so
great that it would lead to the death of countless people.

Why should people suffer because of me and Balarama, he

asked the gathering. He then suggested that the best solution
would be leave the city and go to a new place where it would be
difficult for Jarasandha to attack them.
He reminded the gathering that Jarasandha had already
attacked Mathura seventeen times and he would not rest till he
succeeded in his mission of exterminating the Yadava clan.
It was then that Ugrasena pointed out that if krishna's suggestion
to flee Mathura was accepted, Krishna would forever be labeled a
Ranchod-a man who had run away from the battlefield.
Krishna did not flinch and answered that he is known by several
names. He again renewed his suggestion to leaveMathura.
The gathering reluctantly accepted the suggestion but Ugrasena
wanted to know how a new city could be built in such a short span
of time. The Magadha Army was already near Mathura and it
would reach the city in a mater of days. Then, how can a new
city be built in days, he asked.
Krishna then replied that he had already requested Vishwakarma,
the architect of Gods, for help. He then prayed for Vishwakarma
to appear before the Mathura court. When the architect came,
Krishna asked him to show Ugrasena the plan of the new city.
Vishwakarma showed the court the plan of Dwarka. The entire
gathering was stunned at the beauty of the city.
How much time do you need to construct it, asked Ugrasena of
Vishwakarma.

The architect replied that the city had already been built but that it
was under water. Please give me your permission and I will raise
Dwarka from the ocean and place it on land. It will be ready for
immediate occupation.
When all the Yadavas unanimously give their consent, the capital
was shifted to Dwaraka. When Jarasandha and his army
reached Mathura, they were met with an empty city. An enraged
Jarasandha put the city to destruction and calledKrishna a
coward-Ranchod-a man who had run away for battle.
Krishna, though appeared unfazed by the new name. He knew
that it would be better of one sacrificed his name and fame for the
good of people.
Moreover, he knew that the time had not yet come for Jarasandha
to be killed. He also knew that Jarasandha could only be slain in a
wrestling match and that he would meet his death at the hands
of Bheema.
Krishna bided his time and several years later, led Bheema and
Arjuna to Magadha where Jarasandha wrestled with Bheema for
27 days before being killed.
However, even today, Krishna is also known as Ranchod in
Gurajat-Ran meaning war and Chod meaning run away. Having
run away from battlefield, he was given the name
Ranchod.
