Recycle:
It is better to recycle than dispose but…….

… currently 49% of commercial waste is recycled,

however many companies are achieving real
recycling rates of up to 80% and 90%

What is your recycling number i.e. how much of

your waste is being recycled?

Commercial Case Study

Key Issues identified:

• Historically low non haz recycling rate 45%
• Need for more efficient use of raw materials, maximise recycling
• GS appointed mid 2007. Target 80% recycling by 2008
• Invert the WM hierarchy in practice on site
• Raise awareness - continuous improvement
Implemented Solutions:
 Partnership Approach with GS
Audit of site conducted waste re-classification effected
GS trialled & sourced new outlets for recycling/composting
Biodiesel manufactured / metals & plastics diverted from disposal
Chain-of-Custody - Wyeth branded wastes certified recovery
Improved Segregation - canteen waste & binless office program
Result:
 Recycling rates: 65% at 2007, 89% at 2008, 90% at 2009
2007-2009 cost savings €250K per annum
 Reduced carbon footprint – 114t CO2 annually
