This classic story by Herman Melville revolves around Captain Ahab and his obses
sion with a huge whale, Moby Dick. The whale caused the loss of Ahab's leg years
before, leaving Ahab to stomp the boards of his ship on a peg leg. Ahab is so c
razed by his desire to kill the whale, that he is prepared to sacrifice everythi
ng, including his life, the lives of his crew members, and even his ship to find

Trivia
John Huston shopped the film around Hollywood for three years before United Arti
sts and Moulin Productions agreed to produce it. It was a dark, depressing story
, without any female parts or love interest, so Hollywood shunned the screenplay
. Warners only entered the agreement for theatrical distribution on the conditio
n that a big-name actor take the role of Ahab. Many thought Gregory Peck was mis
cast, and Peck actually thought that Huston himself would have been the best cho

Goofs
Early at sea (on the Cape Verde grounds) the first whale is spotted and then har
pooned by harpooners on each of the three boats. As the whale runs, towing each

boat behind him, a call of "man overboard" is made and we see a close-up of a cr
ewman cutting his boat's harpoon line and then another shot of both remaining bo
ats being towed by the whale. But in the next shot, facing forward from the whal
eboat's perspective, we see three taut lines leading back from the whale. See mo

This version of the Melville classic should, without question, be regarded as th
e penultimate screen adaptation of a masterwork of American fiction. Everything
- absolutely everything - about this film works, from John Huston's brilliant di
rection, to the screenplay ( co-written by Ray Bradbury ), to the powerful and b
elievable performances. Gregory Peck IS Ahab; if anyone defined and crystallized
so megalomaniacal a character, it was Peck, hands down. Not that this should be
interpreted as a slight to any of the supporting cast; it isn't. The casting is
so good, in fact, that now we find it difficult, if not impossible, to view the
supporting cast members in any other light, especially Frederich Ledebur: his c
hoice by the producers as Queequeg was nothing if not dead on the money, as was
the small but significant part of Elizah, as portrayed by Royal Dano. Granted, s
ome liberties were taken with the book ( so what else is new? ), such as the squ
id being written out completely, but this was, and continues to be, necessary in
order to make a movie that doesn't take five hours to play out. Yes, okay, it's
a "Cliff's Notes" "Moby Dick", but if what you're after is good direction, outs
tanding ( one could say tour de force ) acting, and a tight screenplay, then thi
s is the movie for you. Believe us, this is the one, NOT the remake with Patrick
Stewart. Stewart's Ahab is basically Patrick Stewart playing Patrick Stewart pl
aying Ahab or, to put it another way, Huston's "Moby Dick" needs to be remade ab
out as badly as the rest of us need leukemia. 'Nuff said.

Storyline
This classic story by Herman Melville revolves around Captain Ahab and his obses
sion with a huge whale, Moby Dick. The whale caused the loss of Ahab's leg years
before, leaving Ahab to stomp the boards of his ship on a peg leg. Ahab is so c
razed by his desire to kill the whale, that he is prepared to sacrifice everythi
ng, including his life, the lives of his crew members, and even his ship to find

John Huston shopped the film around Hollywood for three years before United Arti
sts and Moulin Productions agreed to produce it. It was a dark, depressing story
, without any female parts or love interest, so Hollywood shunned the screenplay
. Warners only entered the agreement for theatrical distribution on the conditio
n that a big-name actor take the role of Ahab. Many thought Gregory Peck was mis
cast, and Peck actually thought that Huston himself would have been the best cho

Goofs
Early at sea (on the Cape Verde grounds) the first whale is spotted and then har
pooned by harpooners on each of the three boats. As the whale runs, towing each
boat behind him, a call of "man overboard" is made and we see a close-up of a cr
ewman cutting his boat's harpoon line and then another shot of both remaining bo
ats being towed by the whale. But in the next shot, facing forward from the whal
eboat's perspective, we see three taut lines leading back from the whale. See mo

This version of the Melville classic should, without question, be regarded as th
e penultimate screen adaptation of a masterwork of American fiction. Everything
- absolutely everything - about this film works, from John Huston's brilliant di
rection, to the screenplay ( co-written by Ray Bradbury ), to the powerful and b
elievable performances. Gregory Peck IS Ahab; if anyone defined and crystallized
so megalomaniacal a character, it was Peck, hands down. Not that this should be
interpreted as a slight to any of the supporting cast; it isn't. The casting is
so good, in fact, that now we find it difficult, if not impossible, to view the
supporting cast members in any other light, especially Frederich Ledebur: his c
hoice by the producers as Queequeg was nothing if not dead on the money, as was
the small but significant part of Elizah, as portrayed by Royal Dano. Granted, s
ome liberties were taken with the book ( so what else is new? ), such as the squ
id being written out completely, but this was, and continues to be, necessary in

order to make a movie that doesn't take five hours to play out. Yes, okay, it's
a "Cliff's Notes" "Moby Dick", but if what you're after is good direction, outs
tanding ( one could say tour de force ) acting, and a tight screenplay, then thi
s is the movie for you. Believe us, this is the one, NOT the remake with Patrick
Stewart. Stewart's Ahab is basically Patrick Stewart playing Patrick Stewart pl
aying Ahab or, to put it another way, Huston's "Moby Dick" needs to be remade ab
out as badly as the rest of us need leukemia. 'Nuff said.

This classic story by Herman Melville revolves around Captain Ahab and his obses
sion with a huge whale, Moby Dick. The whale caused the loss of Ahab's leg years
before, leaving Ahab to stomp the boards of his ship on a peg leg. Ahab is so c

Trivia
John Huston shopped the film around Hollywood for three years before United Arti
sts and Moulin Productions agreed to produce it. It was a dark, depressing story
, without any female parts or love interest, so Hollywood shunned the screenplay
. Warners only entered the agreement for theatrical distribution on the conditio
n that a big-name actor take the role of Ahab. Many thought Gregory Peck was mis
cast, and Peck actually thought that Huston himself would have been the best cho

Goofs
Early at sea (on the Cape Verde grounds) the first whale is spotted and then har
pooned by harpooners on each of the three boats. As the whale runs, towing each
boat behind him, a call of "man overboard" is made and we see a close-up of a cr
ewman cutting his boat's harpoon line and then another shot of both remaining bo
ats being towed by the whale. But in the next shot, facing forward from the whal
eboat's perspective, we see three taut lines leading back from the whale. See mo

This version of the Melville classic should, without question, be regarded as th
e penultimate screen adaptation of a masterwork of American fiction. Everything
- absolutely everything - about this film works, from John Huston's brilliant di
rection, to the screenplay ( co-written by Ray Bradbury ), to the powerful and b
elievable performances. Gregory Peck IS Ahab; if anyone defined and crystallized
so megalomaniacal a character, it was Peck, hands down. Not that this should be
interpreted as a slight to any of the supporting cast; it isn't. The casting is
so good, in fact, that now we find it difficult, if not impossible, to view the
supporting cast members in any other light, especially Frederich Ledebur: his c
hoice by the producers as Queequeg was nothing if not dead on the money, as was

the small but significant part of Elizah, as portrayed by Royal Dano. Granted, s
ome liberties were taken with the book ( so what else is new? ), such as the squ
id being written out completely, but this was, and continues to be, necessary in
order to make a movie that doesn't take five hours to play out. Yes, okay, it's
a "Cliff's Notes" "Moby Dick", but if what you're after is good direction, outs
tanding ( one could say tour de force ) acting, and a tight screenplay, then thi
s is the movie for you. Believe us, this is the one, NOT the remake with Patrick
Stewart. Stewart's Ahab is basically Patrick Stewart playing Patrick Stewart pl
aying Ahab or, to put it another way, Huston's "Moby Dick" needs to be remade ab
out as badly as the rest of us need leukemia. 'Nuff said.

John Huston shopped the film around Hollywood for three years before United Arti
sts and Moulin Productions agreed to produce it. It was a dark, depressing story
, without any female parts or love interest, so Hollywood shunned the screenplay
. Warners only entered the agreement for theatrical distribution on the conditio
n that a big-name actor take the role of Ahab. Many thought Gregory Peck was mis
cast, and Peck actually thought that Huston himself would have been the best cho

Goofs
Early at sea (on the Cape Verde grounds) the first whale is spotted and then har
pooned by harpooners on each of the three boats. As the whale runs, towing each
boat behind him, a call of "man overboard" is made and we see a close-up of a cr
ewman cutting his boat's harpoon line and then another shot of both remaining bo
ats being towed by the whale. But in the next shot, facing forward from the whal
eboat's perspective, we see three taut lines leading back from the whale. See mo

This version of the Melville classic should, without question, be regarded as th
e penultimate screen adaptation of a masterwork of American fiction. Everything
- absolutely everything - about this film works, from John Huston's brilliant di
rection, to the screenplay ( co-written by Ray Bradbury ), to the powerful and b
elievable performances. Gregory Peck IS Ahab; if anyone defined and crystallized
so megalomaniacal a character, it was Peck, hands down. Not that this should be
interpreted as a slight to any of the supporting cast; it isn't. The casting is
so good, in fact, that now we find it difficult, if not impossible, to view the
supporting cast members in any other light, especially Frederich Ledebur: his c
hoice by the producers as Queequeg was nothing if not dead on the money, as was
the small but significant part of Elizah, as portrayed by Royal Dano. Granted, s
ome liberties were taken with the book ( so what else is new? ), such as the squ
id being written out completely, but this was, and continues to be, necessary in
order to make a movie that doesn't take five hours to play out. Yes, okay, it's
a "Cliff's Notes" "Moby Dick", but if what you're after is good direction, outs
tanding ( one could say tour de force ) acting, and a tight screenplay, then thi
s is the movie for you. Believe us, this is the one, NOT the remake with Patrick
Stewart. Stewart's Ahab is basically Patrick Stewart playing Patrick Stewart pl
aying Ahab or, to put it another way, Huston's "Moby Dick" needs to be remade ab
out as badly as the rest of us need leukemia. 'Nuff said.

interpreted as a slight to any of the supporting cast; it isn't. The casting is
so good, in fact, that now we find it difficult, if not impossible, to view the
supporting cast members in any other light, especially Frederich Ledebur: his c
hoice by the producers as Queequeg was nothing if not dead on the money, as was
the small but significant part of Elizah, as portrayed by Royal Dano. Granted, s
ome liberties were taken with the book ( so what else is new? ), such as the squ
id being written out completely, but this was, and continues to be, necessary in
order to make a movie that doesn't take five hours to play out. Yes, okay, it's
a "Cliff's Notes" "Moby Dick", but if what you're after is good direction, outs
tanding ( one could say tour de force ) acting, and a tight screenplay, then thi
s is the movie for you. Believe us, this is the one, NOT the remake with Patrick
Stewart. Stewart's Ahab is basically Patrick Stewart playing Patrick Stewart pl
aying Ahab or, to put it another way, Huston's "Moby Dick" needs to be remade ab
out as badly as the rest of us need leukemia. 'Nuff said.
