There are several different one-to-one appointments on offer.
These are detailed below.

Health MOT

This will assess your general health status. Measurements that will be
taken include height, weight, blood pressure, cholesterol and body fat. This
is suitable for anyone, but particularly those with a family history of heart
disease and stroke. Charges apply for this service.

Health Related Fitness Assessments

This will assess your aerobic capacity, flexibility, muscular endurance


and strength along with the basic anthropometric measurements such
as height, weight, blood pressure and body composition. Assessment is
suitable for anyone wishing to monitor changes in their fitness over time.
Charges apply for this service.

Nutrition Consultations

A series of one-to-one appointments where advice will be given on


optimising healthy eating habits. Diet sheets will not be issued.

Physical Activity Consultations

Sports Union
To participate in any Sports Union Club, all students must be
a Sports Union member. The Sports Union have 44 different
clubs. For more information about the Sports Union please visit
their webpage www.sportsunion.strath.ac.uk or visit them
on floor 7 of the Union building on John Street. Sports Union
membership costs 25 for students, 44 for graduates and staff
and 12.50 for Erasmus. To participate in any Sports Union club
training session at the CSR you have to be a CSR member or
you require to pay 1.80 admission fee for every session.

Where to Find Us

Want to get a bit more active and not sure how? Come along and speak to
one of our advisors and follow an easy week-by-week activity plan which
will get you more active, fitter and healthier.

Express Cards

A variety of Express Gym Programme cards are available from the Fitness
Instructors desk at the entrance to the CV Suite. They have been designed
in order to allow you to collect one and work through the exercises without
the aid of an Instructor. They are short and simple, yet effective workouts,
suitable for those with limited time.

Exercise Plan

If you require a more detailed plan than the Express Cards provide, we will
be able to provide an exercise plan suitable to your requirements. These
plans target specific requirements, such as strength, endurance, power
and bulking up. Plans can also be prescribed for specific body areas.

Sport Specific Plan

This is a personalised periodised training plan, designed specifically for


your sporting requirements.
Charges apply for this service.

Personal Training

Personal Training offers you the opportunity to work one-to-one


with a personal trainer. It is a great way to train effectively and see
results quickly, especially if you find it hard to motivate yourself when
exercising. Your Personal Trainer will work with you and encourage you
throughout the session, develop and improve your technique, record
your progress and develop your programme as you improve, whilst
also motivating you to remain focused. Charges apply for this service.

Shuttle Run Bleep Test

These are run throughout the year. This test assesses cardiovascular
fitness and is used for Police and Armed Forces for their entry
requirements. This involves running a 20m course at progressively
faster speeds to exhaustion.

Vibration Training (Vibrogym & Powerplate)

Want to optimise your training time? Whole body vibration training


allows you to work harder in a shorter time helping you improve your
fitness, strength and flexibility as well as assisting with weight loss.

CV Inductions

Not sure how to use the CV equipment then book in for a gym
induction. Please note that only general training advice will be given.
For personalised programming book in for an Exercise Plan.

Gym Challenges

See the Centres noticeboards in the main corridor and in the gym for
further information. Various challenges will be held throughout the year,
including individual and team challenges.

Campus Health Walks

The CSR have developed a series of walks in and around the Campus
and the local surrounding area. They range from short 10 minute
walks for those just starting, to longer 45 minute walks for the more
seasoned walker. Routes are available on the Centres web page.

Weightwise

This weight management course aims to educate you about how to lose
weight sensibly and maintain a healthy body composition long term,
through combining diet and exercise. The course will also look at the
psychological aspects of losing weight and maintaining weight loss as
this is the crucial factor for long term success. The course will run from
Thursday 15th January until the end of May and meets in the Lecture
Room of the CSR at 12 noon. Registration for the course will take place
between Thursday 8th thru to Thursday 29th January between 12-1pm
in the Lecture Room of the CSR.The format is a 20 minute weigh in
followed by a 30-40 minute discussion/talk with time for questions.

Facilities

Weights Room

The CSR extends a warm welcome to all members of the University


community and hopes that you will make use of our facilities to follow a
healthy and active lifestyle while you are at Strathclyde. The Centre provides
a recreational service for students, staff, graduates and associates of the
University.

Activities Room

A multi-purpose room used by the


CSR for a range of its fitness classes
as well as by a number of the Sports
Union clubs for training sessions.
The room is also available for use by
members for personal fitness training
and table tennis.

Conditioning Suite

The spacious Conditioning Suite consists


of the following equipment: vibration
platforms (Vibrogym and Powerplate)
and 60 cardiovascular machines (24
treadmills, 11 cross trainers, 8 Concept
rowers, 4 recumbent bikes, 8 upright
bikes, 4 interactive E-Spinners, 1 seated
Octane cross trainer and 1arm ergometer). In addition to the cardiovascular
equipment there are 20 single station resistance machines for strength
training. For functional training there are a range of dumbbells, barbells,
kettle-bells, medicine balls and a Smith machine available allowing for a
balanced workout. A dedicated core area has Swiss Balls, BOSUs and foam
rollers. There is a matted area to encourage post work out stretching.

Sports Hall

The Sports Hall has 6 badminton courts, 2


volleyball, 2 basketball, 2 netball, 2 football
courts, 1 handball, 1 indoor tennis or 1
indoor hockey court. It is also equipped with
2 indoor cricket nets and practice golf net.

Squash Courts

The CSR has 5 squash courts which are


maintained to a high standard. Court number 2
has a glass back wall and a small viewing gallery.
All other courts have limited viewing from the
gallery. Equipment can be hired or purchased
from the CSR reception. No dark soled or outdoor shoes allowed on the
squash courts.

The Weights Room houses an eight


station multi-gym, a squat and lifting
rack, a multi-function lifting rack and ER
powerlifting squat/bench rack. There
are also oak platforms for floor lifts,
along with a range of olympic bars and
weight plates. The room is also equipped with a range of dumbbells, several
adjustable benches and a back hyperextension bench.
Additional weight training space has been made available in the former
Squash court no.1, Equipment consists of 2 full racks, 1 half rack along with
some dumbbells and adjustable benches.

Swimming Pool

The Swimming Pool is situated in the Royal


College Building and is best accessed via
the John Street entrance. The pool is 18.5
metres in length and 7.9 metres wide with
provision for 4 lanes. Maximum capacity is
12 swimmers. Showering is communal. Recreation Swimming Times vary during
the semester. Check web page for current timetable.

Royal College Gym

The Royal College Gym is also situated


in the Royal College Building and has
changing areas for both male and female.
The Centre uses the gym for small sized
fitness classes. Students and staff make
use of this facility for basketball, martial arts training, fencing and personal
fitness training.

Bookings

Available for different activities in the Sports Hall, Activities Room, Royal
College Gym and Squash Courts and are restricted to one hour per visit.
They can be taken up to one week in advance at the CSR Reception or at
the swimming pool for Royal College Gym Bookings. Bookings are not taken
between 12-2pm and 5-7pm Monday to Friday.

Note:

The CSR reserves the right to cancel (up to 30


minutes before class time) or remove classes
from the timetable should numbers not meet
required levels of a minimum of 5. If there are 4
consecutive weeks of less than 5 the class will
be removed.
No entry to class unless a proper warm up has
been completed. Class teacher decision is final.
Timetable will run from Tuesday 30th September
until the end of Semester 2. Check web page for
class alterations. Timetable alterations will be
in place late December, during the January and
May Exam Diet and Easter and Glasgow Fair
Holidays.
A separate summer timetable of classes will be in
operation. Check web page for class timetable.

Classes can be booked in person or by telephone


by members only. Non-members may only book 60
minutes in advance of class. If numbers are less than
five 30 minutes before the class will be cancelled.

A total body workout suitable for all levels of fitness


Traditional aerobic based classes with core conditioning.

Aquafit

Exercise in the water to music.

Body Attack Les Mills group fitness high impact aerobic moves
choreographed to motivational music. Not suitable for beginners to
exercise.
Body Conditioning Exercise class to music, suitable for all levels,

combining aerobic work with resistance training for upper and lower body
through the use of hand weights, bands and body bars.

Body Pump Les Mills group fitness training using weights to music
a great way to change your body shape!

Box Circuits

A circuit style class including boxing stations, with


punching exercises, skipping and other exercises found in a typical
circuits class.

Cardio Core Focuses on the development of strength and stability and


flexiblity in the abdominals and back as well as aerobic training.

Circuits A session designed for those accustomed to exercise.


Combines intensive aerobic work with conditioning work.

How to Join

It is easy to join. Visit our website http://strath.ac.uk/sport/ ;


click on the membership link and select the appropriate category of
membership. Complete the application form, click submit and follow
relevant payment options. Your membership card will normally be
available for collection at the CSR Reception the following working day.

Cyclofit Exercise to music class on a stationary bike.

Staff members and if applicable, their spouse/partner memberships,


should complete the finance mandate form online and bring a copy
of this to reception. Staff members will have their membership fee(s)
deducted from their salary every month.

Lunchtime Classes

Dance Fit Fun and funky, with easy body and footwork moves. Dance
Styles covered will be Funk style, House, Lockin, Hip-Hop and lots more.

A photographic ID is required when collecting

IMPORTANT:

Metafit A 30 minute bodyweight training class, working at high intensity

intervals. Aim is to increase metabolism by firing major muscle groups into


action, short, sharp, session.

Pilates This class will strengthen, tone and stretch the body from the
