REFLECTION ON LISTENING AND SPEAKING

This is the first week of our third phase course at ELTC. The trainers help me to
understand the right methods and concepts of teaching Listening and Speaking in the
classroom. It is important for me to teach my pupils with the right methods and skills so that my
pupils are able to receive the right information throughout their learning by improving their
listening and speaking abilities. It is very important for the pupils to become effective listeners
and good speaker to enable them gain more knowledges during their learning process. Before I
am able to help these pupils to be a good listener and speaker, I must equip myself with the
skills and strategies to teach them well.
Based on DSKP, as a teacher, I need to help these pupils to communicate effectively in a
variety of contexts that suit their level of knowledges and developments. The trainer help us by
explaining and showing us few examples that will help me in planning different teaching
approaches, lessons and materials that suits the different needs and abilities of my pupils so
that I can help them to develop their full potential. The aim of teaching listening and speaking
are to make pupils listen and encourage them to speak so that they can establish their abilities
to communicate in real life. First, pupils need to learn to listen, speak and share thoughts; ideas
and feelings without hesitate or shy to express themselves.
The trainers help us to identify and address the challenges in teaching listening and
speaking skills by asking us to discuss among us so that we are able to share the experiences
that were face by others. We gain a lot of inputs because we come from different kind of schools
and backgrounds that help us to find ways to cater what we need to do to help our pupils. I need
to provide opportunities for the pupils to practice and carry out a range of tasks to facilitate the
progression of their skills. It is important for me to really understand the concepts of teaching
listening and speaking because it is the main channel of classroom instruction and language
skills during their lessons,
The trainers show us the 3P stages in teaching listening and speaking, where there are
lots of suitable and meaningful activities at each stage to provide input and ample opportunities
for my pupils to practice and use the language. The first stage is the presentation stage, in this
stage I need to prepare pupils for listening. The second stage is the practice stage where I need
to provide opportunities to listen and develop their understanding and the last one is the
production stage.

The trainers help me to understand the important of writing SMART objectives so that I
can have guidelines on what to achieve during my teaching session. The knowledges really help
me a lot. I hope I will be able to teach listening and speaking better in the future.
