Learn Math Through Reading In

New Workshop

he women of the Madison Branch

of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) are organizing a workshop for second graders Lets
Read Math, Sat., Jan. 9, and Sat., Jan. 23,
10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at the Madison Public
Library.
When it comes to math, many parents
are stumped to "doing math" with their
kids especially now when math is taught
differently than the way they learned it.
The fact is math is done all the time often
without realizing it.
Dr. Claire Passantino developed the
Lets Read Math materials with the help
of colleagues who are elementary mathematics educators. The math topics are
drawn from national and state standards for
teaching and learning mathematics. Childrens mathematics learning is enhanced
by connecting the reading of childrens

books to real life experiences, to drawing

and writing, using hands-on manipulation
and models, and sharing ideas with others
through listening and speaking.
Parents, grandparents or other caretakers and children together will combine
reading and math with fun hands-on creative activities. The workshops will be
conducted by members of the Madison
Branch of AAUW, many of whom are retired teachers themselves.
Only 15 participants for each session
will be allowed and registration is required.
Call 973 455 0427 to sign up. Registration
fee for the workshop is $10 in advance for
both sessions. Each session will be a different story and cover different mathematical concepts appropriate for this age
group.
For additional information call Judy at
973-455-0427 or Shirley at 973-377- 5220.

IMPLANT DENTISTRY
For over twenty years, implant dentistry has been a reliable option for patients
with missing teeth. With the ability to support a crown, an implant procedure
has the capacity to bypass drilling the adjacent teeth. Additionally, with the
recent availability of mini implants, implant dentistry has expanded its utilization to anchoring both full and partial dentures for a more secure fit. As they
provide an economic alternative, patients have been very receptive of mini
implants, as they make eating and speaking with dentures much easier.
Dr. Helen Chiu has always been involved in implant dentistry, making it an
integrated part of her everyday practice. From replacing a single tooth, inserting crowns or bridges, securing dentures, to creating multiple, full-arch reconstructions, she performs every step of each process, surgical and restorative.

For almost 20 years, the chamber has
been hosting this town-wide holiday contest. All homeowners are invited to enter
their homes to be judged. Last year there
were 18 entries. Three judges are asked to
select their favorite decorated homes based
on several categories. They mostly consider
creativity and how the decorations work
with the specific themes, organizers say.
The Outdoor Home Decorating Contest
judges in the following categories: Most Elegant, Winter Wonderland, Most Tasteful,
Most Traditional, Best Sparkling Holiday,
Most Creative, Most Colorful, Picture Perfect, Best Storybook Theme, Home for the

then given to each of the 10 theme based
winners who receive a $25 Madison Gift

Madison Chamber Businesses Support Madison Eagle Christmas Fund

he Madison Eagle Christmas Fund, is

a homegrown charitable organization
of volunteers who extend a helping
hand to residents who otherwise would have
faced a bleak holiday season, said Gary
Ruckelshaus, organizations chair.
Through its annual town-wide appeal that
begins before the start of the holiday season,
the Fund collects donations so that they can
be distributed to Madison households in
distressed circumstances, Ruckelshaus said.
It is a proud tradition unlike any other in
Morris County.
The fund grew over the years to involve
dozens of volunteers who donate their time
each Christmas season to buy, wrap and deliver gifts, Ruckelshaus said. The good
work of the Fund has touched thousands of
less fortunate Madison residents.
Ruckelshaus says the generosity of
donors, as well as merchants, civic groups,
and Madison students, who take up collections of books, toys, and winter hats and
gloves, are the backbone of the Funds efforts.
The Fund focuses on the needs of Madison seniors and children up to the age of

"The businesses have really embraced the
organizations mission and have come out in
full force to make sure everyone has a merry
holiday. Please stop by your local businesses

and share in the Spirit of Giving." said Giambra.

Our recipients are typically referred to
the fund by Madisons clergy, school personnel and social workers. The referrals identify
households were children lack warm clothing for the winter; where senior citizens live
in isolation and anxiety about how they can
afford both meals and heating bills, and
whether they will be forgotten at Christmas;
where single parents work hard but still did
not know how they will manage to put toys
under the tree, or a holiday meal on the
table. Ruckelshaus said.
The Funds tradition of giving started
forty-one years ago, when Madisons Barbara Valk and her family acted on an impulse
to remember a small number of lonely senior
citizens at Christmastime with holiday gifts.
In 1974 Louise Easton, the new owner and
then editor of the Madison Eagle, joined
forces with the Valks and the MadisonEagle Christmas Fund was born.

Newspaper Company Goes Full Circle, Doubles In Size, Returns Home

By Cheryl Conway
ith a new year comes change, like a different
office for New View Media Group LLC.

But for Joe Nicastro and Mary Lalama of Flanders,

co-owners with Darwin Oordt of Cherry Hill, they return
to the office where the company first started a dozen
years ago. Coming home is a wonderful feeling for them,
not only to return to the original office, but in the literal
sense that it is located where they dwell in Mt. Olive
Township.
On Mon., Nov. 16, New View Media Group moved
from its East Hanover office to Lakeview Plaza at 1 Old
Wolfe Rd, suite 205, in Budd Lake. The company had
been in East Hanover since April when it had merged
with the Marketeer, which had been headquartered there
for for about 15 years after being in Livingston since 1978.
What a nice homecoming it has been for Nicastro and
Lalama.
The lease was up and being from Mt. Olive and a
councilman I wanted to bring my business to my hometown, says Nicastro. From a personal view it is close
to home for me and Mary and our employees that come
in on a daily basis. I am very happy to be back in Mt.
Olive close to home.
While the current location is just temporary, Nicas-

tros plan is to purchase a different building in town

eventually.
We are in the process of purchasing a building and
needed a temporary place, says Nicastro. The address
we are at now is the same address that we moved to when
we started the papers in 2004. We had started the Mt.
Olive Weekly back then and found that location. It was
available once again.
Nicastros plan is we are looking at a small building
along Route 46 that we feel would be a perfect home and
give great exposure to the business.
For New View Media Group, 2015 has been a tremendous year of growth.
With a current circulation of about 159,000 homes
from as far west as Hackettstown to as far east as Cedar
Grove, New View Media Group has grown from eight
monthly papers this time last year and plans to hold
steady with 15 papers moving into 2016.
On April 1, they had formed a partnership with Oordt,
owner of the Marketeer, a free shopper type supplement.
They changed their name from MJ (My Jersey) Media to
New View Media with The idea that we have a new
view on media, says Nicastro.
All community news, from schools to government,
people, organizations, places of worship, libraries, nonprofit organizations, volunteer services, childrens

groups, scouts, fundraisers and more are featured in the

free monthly papers. The companys philosophy is to
showcase all the good, positive news that surrounds its
readers.
New View Media Groups publications, moving forward, include Mt. Olive News, Hackettstown News,
Roxbury News, Randolph News, Black River News,
Morristown News, Mendham News, Madison News,
Chatham News, Livingston News, Hanover News, Caldwell News, Verona/Cedar Grove News, Millburn/Short
Hills News and East Hanover/Florham Park News.
As far as continued growth, Nicastro says We are in
the middle of reevaluating the papers to see where and
when other expansions would make sense.
Offering free publications to all residences and businesses, the company depends on paid advertising. Contact Nicastro at 800-691-7549 or joe@newviewmg.com.
New View Media Group also invites the community
to help share any positive news with its neighbors by
sending all story ideas and press releases to
editor@newviewmg.com.
Publications can also be viewed online at www.mypaperonline.com. For more information and publication
deadlines, visit www.newviewmediagroup.com.

Friends of Thomas Edison NHP Help

Preserve Victorian- Dickens Era Landmarks In West Orange

By Michele Guttenberger
he hallmark years of Thomas Edisons life were
at the center of the Dickens Victorian era the
reign of Queen Vitoria (1837 1901). Charles
Dickens published A Christmas Carol four years before
Thomas Edison was born. Charles Dickens had become
the influentially renowned author of his time who tapped
into the social conscious of the Victorian age that marveled over the wonder of modern inventions and believed
in mindfulness to the plight of the poor. The inventions
of Thomas Edison would become significant milestones
in the timeline of the Victorian era. And every well-read
American home would also have the works of Britains
Charles Dickens in their own family library. Such was
true of the Edison home. The style and fashion of the Victorian era is paralleled to the early life of Thomas Edison
and his family.
Thomas Edison made two important real estate purchases in West Orange in the last decades of the 19th
Century. It was in West Orange where he developed his
own plans to build a state of the art factory and research
laboratory and just a mile away he acquired the Glen-

National

mont - a gorgeous fully furnished Queen Anne style Victorian mansion in the gated community of Llewellyn
Park. Edison, a 39 year old widower and father of three
young children married Mina Miller in 1886. Glenmont
was the wedding gift to his 19 year old bride. Both Glenmont and Edisons factory lab became legendary early
modern American landmarks and on Sept. 5, 1963 the
National Park Service combined Edison's home and laboratory into a single national park called Edison National
Historic Site.
Many groups and organizations are dedicated to preserving the history of Thomas Edison but, the members
of Thomas Edison NHP, FoTENHP, has a unique passion
that dedicates their volunteer efforts in preserving the
physical structure, grounds and fixtures of these two
landmark locations. It is this group that has raised funds
to repair the stained glass window at Glenmont, been involved in the spring plantings at the estate grounds and
participated in making the Glenmont historically decorative for Christmas Holiday visitors.
This community of friends of Thomas Edison has
been fundraising for these restoration projects since

1954. They have fostered the spirit of this era which includes donning on their best Victorian attire for these festive events. The goal this year is to raise funds for the
factory site. Their focus is on making the heavy machine
shop operational again. The main line shaft is in need of
significant repair. For those desiring to help preserve
these landmarks of NJs awe-inspiring legacies, consider
joining FoTENHP or make a contribution online at
www.foedison.org. FoTENHP is a non-profit organization and contributions are tax deductible.
Visit the Victorian Glenmont bedecked for the Christmas Holiday that revisits Edison familys Christmas celebrations. Go to the visitor center at the Laboratory
Complex, 211 Main Street, to get a vehicle pass for Glenmont. Tickets for house tour are on a limited first-come
first-served basis from the Laboratory Visitor Center
starting at 10 a.m. on Fri., Sat. and Sun. A ticketed tour
is the process to enter the house.
Visit the Thomas Alva Edison Museum, Wed. through
Sun., 10 a.m. 4 p.m. Admission is $10. Visit
http://www.nps.gov/edis for more details.
